A FAVOR TO ASK

See Cortex Entry: A FAVOR TO ASK for More Details

Encouraged by the success of the young Freelancer, Yarrow wanted to pass along some Freelancer traditions in danger of being lost. He explained that those who have died in battle should not be forgotten, and sent the Freelancer to gather a device called a link from those fallen. In life, the link connects Freelancers to a cypher. In death, it is a record of their valor.
While tending to sites of great battles, the Freelancer encountered outlaws intent on stealing from the dead. The Freelancer stopped these lawless brutes and retrieved the equipment—including the precious devices. Yarrow set a final task before the Freelancer, to find a memorial Yarrow himself had crafted years ago, and light a brazier to honor a fallen friend.

Agent Yarrow (1)

See Cortex Entry: Agent Yarrow (1) for More Details

A lifelong daredevil, Freelancer Yarrow retired long before the events of the Heart of Rage. He embraces Freelancer beliefs and spent his life keeping his flock—and anyone who will listen—on the right path. The only path. A lifetime of unfiltered exuberance for life has slowed him down, but his passion for preaching the gospel of the Freelancers remains strong.

I didn't know what it was... a crouching, massive form silhouetted by the Cataclysm, maybe three times as tall as my javelin. It was eating something. There was a flash of light. I saw it clear. It was nothing I had seen in my long years. Something that had crept out of a different place. Another flash and it rose up to its full height and howled. In pain? In anger? I cannot tell you. Another crack of light and it was gone, pulled back to that terrible place known only to Shapers. The storm disappeared. Silence.

I was the only person to see that monster. The only person that would ever see it. That is the beauty, the responsibility, of being a Freelancer.

There is much to discover out there. I tell these stories in hopes that those restless few in this new generation consider searching for what they are missing beyond the wall.

Without Freelancers, there is no future beyond the wall, no plans, no civilization—only rough survival. Does that sound crazy?

Yes, maybe it is.

People say we aren't needed. Yes, this is easy to say when you are comfortable behind the wall, with the Sentinels marching back and forth to keep the jungle away. Perhaps less easy from the inside of a moving strider, despite plates of steel between you and the monsters. And finally, not so easy for those who find themselves out there alone. There are no words, just silence.

BAD DEAL

See Cortex Entry: BAD DEAL for More Details

Yarrow learned that an auction for the sale of the stolen fragments had been organized. After consulting with Freelancer friends, a number of likely locations for the event were found. The Freelancer traveled to the first location, finding it abandoned, but discovered a clue to another site.
It was a trap—an ambush was waiting for the Freelancer. After overcoming a horde of outlaws, the auction's true location was revealed, in a recovered stolen Freelancer link worn by one of the defeated.
Facing countless enemies, the Freelancer stopped the auction and recovered the fragments. The victory was marred by the discovery that the shattered remains of the Dominion army and the outlaw Diggs had struck a deal.

"I was talking some Freelancer though a contract when the call came in. A distress beacon was activated in the area. Without a thought, I sent the team. I realized too late the call was a trap. Outlaws had killed a Freelancer and somehow rigged his suit to send out a distress signal. I know what to look for now, but the price was too high for that lesson.”

Festive: Founding of Fort Tarsis (Challenges)

See Cortex Entry: Festive: Founding of Fort Tarsis (Challenges) for More Details

Freelancers celebrate the anniversary of Fort Tarsis' foundation the only way they can: by continuing the Legion of Dawn's work.

Participate in this festive event by gaining reputation with each faction and completing contracts.

Freelancer Enclave: Argentum Tran's Sidearm

See Cortex Entry: Freelancer Enclave: Argentum Tran's Sidearm for More Details

This pistol belonged to the legendary Sentinel Argentum Tran. She was stationed in Fort Tarsis as a young officer, and fought on the front lines during the War of Seven Luminaries. After distinguishing herself in the battle at Junkhead Basin, she was recalled to the capitol, and left this gun to a close friend among her squadmates. She reportedly said, “It's never failed me, and neither have you. It's a perfect match.”

The sidearm has been passed down among active duty Sentinels ever since. And now it has been given to the Freelancers as a sign of lancer fellowship.

Freelancer Enclave: Scar Seeker Mine

See Cortex Entry: Freelancer Enclave: Scar Seeker Mine for More Details

Obtained by Freelancer Yarrow during the War of Seven Luminaries, this was the first completely intact example of Scar technology the Arcanists were able to study. Because of this unexploded mine, Arcanists were able to research better means of detecting and tracking Scar weaponry and disseminate these to cyphers across Bastion and beyond, vastly improving Freelancer and Sentinel effectiveness against Scars.

ANTIUM NEWS, CURRENT EDITION.

Lady Cardea Dell and other Bastion citizens, long thought lost, were recently found by a team of brave Freelancers who released them from an anomaly in the Emerald Abyss. The Royal Family, along with all of us, owe a great debt of gratitude to the Freelancers and their Fort Tarsis cypher. Strong Alone, Stronger Together, indeed!

Marriage Announcement: Bex Marxel and Teenen Prosh were joined in a quiet ceremony in the Fort Tarsis courtyard yesterday. Freelancer Yarrow spoke and many were moved to tears. The couple now travel to Fortuo where they will no doubt experience new adventures. Good luck to them.

Teenen,

You can't be a Freelancer. You aren't ready. Yes, like you say, I knew your aunt well and she was an excellent pilot. I think she would give you the same advice.

Go out and see things. Be brave. Learn about the Shapers. Touch their relics. See an ursix from afar before you must fight one. See, with your own eyes, the danger. Then you come to the enclave and we will open our arms to you.

This is not an easy life, but it is a glorious one.

Dearest Bex,

I think about you every day. I miss you. I've seen so many exciting things. I understand why you didn't come with me, but I still wish that you did.

Highlights… we passed a Scar village. I ate manticor on a dare. I visited the Fort Tarsis library. There's a kind of fountain nearby. I sat there and read about a million words. But wherever I go, I make sure to visit the Freelancer enclave. I want so badly to pilot a javelin like my aunt. I'm determined to impress Freelancer Yarrow.

Here's a joke... how many Scars does it take to kill a Titan? Fifty. Because, it's a glitching Titan!.

That's terrible, but I hope you're laughing anyway.

I miss your laugh.

Teenen

The Sentinels, with the help of the Arcanists, have removed any dangerous goods from Diggs' hideout and disposed of any damaged and unstable Dominion technology.

Commander Vule wanted to pass along his thanks.

We may not have so many Freelancers as Sentinels, but what we do cannot be done by others.

Never forget that.

Hello,

My name is Anden. My mum helps fix up your javelin. Yours is really good, by the way.

I got to see Freelancer Yarrow's wall and hear lots of stories about the Freelancers and how important their work was. I'm going to study really hard and become a good Freelancer like you. I'll take good care of my javelin so mum doesn't worry and look after my Freelancer friends too. "Strong Alone, Stronger Together."

From,
Future Freelancer Anden

Cold out there now.
Yet busy, always busy.
Good and bad in that, yes? There will always be much to do.
We have more Freelancers now, more willing to do what is right for those who cannot.
That is good.
I maybe doubted that we would come back into the graces of the people, but I see that my doubt was misplaced.
The world keeps fighting us, keeps testing us, and Freelancers will always be needed.
I don't know where your travels will lead you, but I do know that you have changed things here.
So much good.
I'm very proud, you hear me?
Do they still have snowball fights around here? I will ask.

Freelancer,

Without your push, I never would've laid Kismet to rest and, worse, I would've lost Yarrow, too. Things are better between me and the old man. We have a standing dinner once a week, and I no longer have to avoid talking about the wall. We still have debates, but they're less... heated. More academic. I wouldn't call them fun, but certainly interesting. That's family, right?

If you ever need anything, I've got your back. And who knows? Maybe we'll run a contract together.
Take care.

Hey, just seeing what you're up to. I should warn you about drinking too much of whatever that garbage Yarrow likes... Fortuo Batch, or whatever it is? Tastes like something that causes mutations in grabbits, y'know? It's so terrible, I think I damaged my past. Like my mom won't recognize me anymore. Crap. Anyway, see you around!

Someone has grown very skilled, yes? These difficult contracts are not for everyone. I had a visitor down at the enclave recently. She spent some time reading the stories on the wall. She asked if there were Freelancers still out there, still working. I said, yes, of course. She just nodded and said "I'm glad." That was good to hear.

Very happy Sentinels and Freelancers are working together. Sentinel Brin showed great vision and daring to encourage this.

THE IMPOSTOR

See Cortex Entry: THE IMPOSTOR for More Details

Freelancers were going missing, and Yarrow knew Diggs was involved. Using Freelancer Rythe as a lure for Diggs, the Freelancer was able to track down the hidden den of the outlaw gang. The deal between Diggs and the Dominion was made clear: in exchange for weapons and technology to help him become a powerful gang leader, he would hand captive Freelancers over to the Dominion.
Each released Freelancer joined the team in battle. This hidden war was fought between Freelancers and outlaws within a massive cavern of ancient ruins, until Diggs himself appeared. He taunted the Freelancer, sure of his victory. But in the end, the Freelancer prevailed, and without a word, Diggs and his reign of terror was no more.

WHAT FREELANCERS DO

See Cortex Entry: WHAT FREELANCERS DO for More Details

Through an introduction from Tassyn, the Freelancer met with Yarrow, a retired Freelancer who works to preserve the traditions of the job. He offered the Freelancer a contract to protect a group of Arcanists conducting tests just outside the walls of Fort Tarsis.
The Arcanists found themselves confronted by a swarm of Scars of unprecedented size, so close to Fort Tarsis. The Freelancer's quick thinking saved not only the Arcanists, but also a fellow Freelancer by the name of Rythe, from an uncertain fate, and ensured they all returned home.

Weather Phenomenon

Jak,

Has anybody asked Yarrow about the sky thing? I mean, he has to know, right? A Freelancer as old as him, he's seen a zillion cataclysms and weird Shaper things by now.

It's creeping me out. If there's a way to silence or get rid of... whatever that is, I want in. Or at least I want to hear about it afterward. In the enclave. Indoors. With no view of the sky
