Team, our rookie's tangled with a wyvern. |
Wyvern are elementals brought to life by the Anthem of Creation.
Etymology and Anatomy
Wyvern get their names from the word Wyvern (A winged two-legged dragon with a barbed tail). The plural of Wyvern is Wyverns. A group of Wyverns is called a pyre.
They have an umber colored leathery skin. There are several bright yellow spots on their bodies.
Wyverns are bipedal fauna with two additional arms attached to their wings—all four of them are equipped with talons. They have a triangular head with two large red eyes. Wyverns have yellow bristles growing out of their backs. They have three tails—the central tail is forked at its tip.
Like all Elementals, Wyverns are sentient.
Narrative Involvement
A Wyvern Prepares to Attack
Wyverns are carnivores and like to roost in high spaces. They prefer warmer climates and have a tendency to go mad and berserk in colder climates. They are migratory predators.
Wyverns were once thought to be rare in Bastion, until the Heart of rage was unleashed in Freemark. When a rookie Freelancer joined Haluk in his first attempt to silence this cataclysm, they were knocked down by a Wyvern, causing severe damage to their suit.
Several other Wyverns have been encountered in Northern Bastion during many expeditions. In fact, a Wyvern tried to nest atop the spire of Fort Tarsis recently in 468 LV. Chimera forms of Wyverns also exist.

Behavior and Abilities
Wyvern are described as elemental terrors by the Arcanists. They don’t care how powerful their enemies are. They simply shoot fire balls at their targets while encircling them.
- Ranged Fire Blast: A Wyvern stops encircling and shoots several blasts of fire balls on its targets. The range of this attack is quite high.
- Fire Breath: A Wyvern continuously breathes fire on its targets whilst flying.
Hidden Attributes
Wyvern have the following hidden attributes:
- Flight: Wyvern can fly and attack their enemies.
- Elemental Weakness: Wyverns are susceptible and can immediately explode if they come in contact with elemental status effects.
Strategy
A Wyvern Pyre using Fire Breath
Wyvern attack in numbers or individually.
Doing damage to or defeating these creatures can make them drop ammo and repair packs. If health or ammo is low, collect these resupplies.
Combat
Because Wyverns are constantly moving, it can be difficult to target them. However, simply putting them under
Fire status,
Ice Status, or
Lightning status will cause them to explode. They are generally weaker to elemental attacks than physical attacks. Otherwise, target the Wyvern’s head, because that’s where it is weak.
Wyvern can put a javelin under the
burned status and cause the thrusters to
Overheat.
Every Named Wyvern
There are no named Wyvern but there is at least one prominent one:
- Wyvern that damages the Freelancer’s javelin in Silence the Heart of Rage. Its corpse can be seen during Return to the Heart of Rage.
Trivia (May Contain Spoilers)
- Like most creatures of Coda, Wyvern can glow. The yellow spots on their bodies glow brightly, especially in the dark.
- Wyverns migrate to high places for nesting. However, Natural Ripstreams can hinder their migration and force them to roost elsewhere.
- Wolven and Frost Wolven love wyvern meat.
- Wyverns can be eaten by humans, however, according to Yarrow, they taste terrible.
- Wyvern are known to have two chimera forms: Storm Wyvern and and Ice-type Wyvern Chimera.
- New types of Wyvern-like creatures were shared as Concept art for the new build of Anthem. Also, the new Faction, Pirates of Blood Wind, are known to tame Wyverns, according to the concept arts from the new build.
- The ability names are taken from the Anthem Prima Guide and datamined files. They may have been slightly modified to avoid confusion with other in-game names.
