Tassyn has tasked the Freelancer to help her Sentinel Agent Ryssa Brin, Arcanist Agent Matthias Sumner, and Freelancer Agent Yarrow as they require assistance. Once the Freelancer has acquainted themselves with these Agents, they must perform a simple contract for them to be on Tassyn and Corvus' good side.

Here, Yarrow wants to help Arcanists performing seismic tests to figure out if Fort Tarsis’ foundation is stable or needs repairing.

Hints and Suggestions

  • The dialog exchange between the characters will change depending on whether single player or multiplayer mode is played.
  • Remember to perform Feats to obtain XP for increasing Pilot Level and receiving Alliance bonus.
  • Make sure to read the text pop ups that show around the memorials. This can be easily done with the help of a Sniper Rifle. Zoom and aim at the pop up marker that looks like for the best view.
  • Scars infantry can be easily defeated with any attack. When hordes of Scars show up, use attacks that do any type of Blast Damage.
  • Take down the shields of Scouts and Hunters to tackle them easily.
  • Junkmaw can do quite some damage, so it should be prioritized over other Scars when it spawns. Once its shields are stripped, use fire to stop it from flying or ice to freeze it.
  • Steel Cutter doesn’t do a lot of damage but has a significant amount of health. Using acid, armor buster or fire to damage it will be the most effective strategy.

The first site chosen to start construction on Fort Tarsis was damaged by a massive flood, creating a series of sink holes. After a thorough series of seismic tests, construction began again at a different site. Regular tests are performed under the current Fort Tarsis to monitor the foundation.

Outcome: A routine contract to ensure the protection of a group of Arcanists conducting seismic tests revealed unprecedented Scar activity close to Fort Tarsis. All the Arcanists were returned home safe with help from a fellow Freelancer named Rythe, who was wounded in the encounter.

Trivia (May Contain Spoilers)

  • Interestingly, the cypher for this mission is Owen. Although he is a cypher who works for the Freelancer faction, this is the one of the few times we hear from him outside of the Critical Objectives or Freeplay as a mission cypher.
  • The tone of the Arcanists in the beginning is doubtful towards the Freelancer’s ability to protect them, as people still don’t have faith in Freelancers.
  • The text popup at the second site indicates that there after the equipment were ransacked, they were scavenged, hinting what’s to come next.
  • The text popup inside the empty cage reads:
    • Instruments used to collect readings from underground beacons.
  • This is the first-time when machine-gun turrets are shown.
  • Yarrow’s joy over the putting down Junkmaw indicates that the Scar was indeed very dangerous.
  • A text popup on a dead scar enforcer near Rythe’s supposed location in Memorial Gate reads:
    • These Scars were killed with Freelancer weapons. Chiefly melee and other close quarters combat options.
  • A text popup by the abandoned tunnel’s entrance mentions that it was used during the time of Fort Tarsis’ construction phase.
  • Junkmaw is a Scar Hunter, whereas Steel Cutter is a Scar Enforcer. Yarrow doesn’t acknowledge Steel cutter’s existence, unlike Junkmaw’s.
  • Both Steel Cutter and Junkmaw are elite or legendary enemies depending on the difficulty settings of the mission.
  • It seems that there were a total of 4 Arcanist work sites, two handled by Rythe and the Freelancer each.
  • There were a total of 10 Arcanists on this mission, and everyone returned to the fort alive.

Below is the Script and Walkthrough for What Freelancers Do (Mission):

Briefing

Yarrow is waiting for the Freelancer in the Enclave by the Contract bulletin board.

  • Yarrow: "Ah, my new friend! You listened well to my story of Freemark, eh?"
  • The Freelancer: "Never heard it told like that."
  • Yarrow: "I was long retired. The Battle was not mine to fight. But good friends tell me. I was a Freelancer for many years. You know what Freelancers do?"
  • The Freelancer: "We deal with things beyond the wall. Problems. We help people."
  • Yarrow: "Truth. But it’s not so small as that. We explore. We fight chaos. We save lives, you hear me?"
  • The Freelancer: "Okay, I hear you."
  • Yarrow: "People could count on us. In this world, a big deal. But that has been long lost. People don’t trust us. Hard times now. But enough gloom. Got a contract for you. Going to protect some Arcanists doing seismic tests, okay?"
  • The Freelancer: "Seismic tests?"
  • Yarrow: "Yeah. Check to see if Fort Tarsis has strong foundation. Don’t want it to fall into a hole like last time."
  • The Freelancer: "What?"
  • Yarrow: "But these tests attract animals. The kind with teeth y’know? You protect one side of the Fort, and Freelancer Rythe will protect the other. You hear me?"
  • The Freelancer: "I hear you."
  • Yarrow: "Good. Now go. I’m hungry. No breakfast yet."

Protect Arcanists

The Freelancer prepares for the expedition.

Launch Expedition

The Freelancer ventures outside the walls.

Briefing Gallery

In Expedition

The Freelancer starts from outside the fort’s gate in Tarsis Forest when their Cypher, Owen makes a comment.

  • Owen: "Patching in Freelancer Yarrow."

Protect Arcanists

  • Yarrow: "Yarrow here. Let’s see if we can keep some Freelancers alive, yes? Freelancer Rythe has begun her patrol."
  • Freelancer Rythe: "This is Rythe. Like the man says, I’m on my way."
  • The Freelancer: "Let’s see what we can do, Rythe."

Locate First Work Site

The Freelancer travels to the coordinates provided by Yarrow to reach Tarsis Forest. Two Arcanists are waiting by lots of equipment at the location.

  • Arcanist #1: "There’s the Freelancer. Hey! Over here"
  • Arcanist #2: "You’re sure about this? I mean…"
  • Arcanist #1: "Let’s just get it done."

Help Activate the Device

  • Arcanist #1: "Seismic indicator is ready to go. Okay?"
  • Arcanist #2: "Hate this part. Always makes me nervous."

The Freelancer activates the equipment while the Arcanists cower in fear. A green cypher projection circle appears to keep a track of the device’s range.

  • Yarrow: "Remember, these tests attract animals. Don’t know why. Make sure the Arcanists stay healthy. You understand?"
  • The Freelancer: "Got it. I’ll keep an eye out."

Work in Progress

A pack of wolven attack the device.

  • The Freelancer: "Wild animals incoming!"
  • Yarrow: "You see? Every time. So angry."
  • Yarrow: "Keep those wolven away from the Arcanists!"
  • The Freelancer: "Maybe they should do tests that don’t make animals angry."
  • Yarrow: "Pah, science. What can you do?"

The Freelancer fights and defeats the enemies. When the test is completed, any remaining animals will automatically retreat.

  • Arcanist #1: "Okay. That’s it. Tests are done."
  • The Freelancer: "They got through okay, Yarrow."
  • Yarrow: "Good. Go to the next group. I will make sure these Arcanists get back safe."

The Freelancer flies to the next site.

Locate Second Work Site

As the Freelancer flies, Rythe intercepts the comms link,

  • Freelancer Rythe: "Freelancer Rythe here. First group has finished up. No angry animals."
  • The Freelancer: "Lucky her."
  • Yarrow: "Maybe. Hmm. Strange."
  • Freelancer Rythe: "Heade to next location."

When the Freelancer reaches the second location, still in Tarsis Forest, the equipment on the site is destroyed and there are no Arcanists in sight.

  • The Freelancer: "Found the second site."

Examine Site

The Freelancer interacts with the broken equipment to find out more.

  • The Freelancer: "Not seeing any Arcanists."
  • Yarrow: "Yes. I see. Okay let’s do a search for energy signatures in the area."

Search for Arcanists

The Freelancer searches for Arcanist energy signatures and reaches a location in Tarsis Falls.

  • Yarrow: "It’s Scars!"

Rescue Arcanists

There is a Scar Cage where the Arcanists could be trapped. They must be rescued.

Eliminate Scars

The Freelancer fights a swarm of Scars and a Scar Enforcer.

  • Yarrow: "Look out, it’s a Scar heavy. Don’t try to smash the shield—get behind it."
  • The Freelancer: "Understood."

After the Freelancer defeats the enemies,

  • The Freelancer: "That’s all of them I think."

Investigate Cage

The Freelancer finds a cage and heads to investigate it,

  • The Freelancer: "No Arcanists in here. Where are they?"
  • Yarrow: "No bodies. Good. Scars must have taken them."
  • The Freelancer: "Why take Arcanists?"
  • Yarrow: "Maybe because they know much about Shaper things. Valuable to Scars."
  • The Freelancer: "Can we track them?"
  • Yarrow: "Yes go. Scars scavenge everything, yeah? So, I look for the energy signatures of Arcanist tools."

Yarrow sends a new set of coordinates to the Freelancer.

Track Missing Arcanists

The Freelancer heads in the direction pointed by Yarrow.

  • The Freelancer: "Still getting that signal?"
  • Yarrow: "Yes. Not far."

When the Freelancer reaches the location at Tarsis Falls, Scars have set up camp.

  • Yarrow: "A camp. You see?"
  • The Freelancer: "Yes. It’s going to be a fight."

Eliminate Scars

Several Scars show up by gating in

Stockpiles Destroyed

The Freelancer must destroy 2 stockpiles while dealing with the Scars.

  • Yarrow: "Look at them all. I don’t like this."
  • The Freelancer: "I don’t either!"
  • Yarrow: "A turret? Ack. And look at their numbers."
  • The Freelancer: "Yes. I’m getting acquainted with both!"
  • Yarrow: "I’m seeing a lot of munitions around here. Take care of them."

While the combat progresses,

  • Yarrow: "Haven’t heard from Rythe in a while. Too many dangerous Scars in the area. This is bad business."

The Freelancer sees two Arcanists captured inside a cage.

  • Arcanist: "Hey! Over here! Help us!"
  • Yarrow: "More cages? That’s our Arcanists. They were preparing to move them out of here."
  • The Freelancer: "Lucky we got here in time."

When the Scars are dealt with, and the first stockpile is destroyed,

  • Yarrow: "Good. Very good."

When the second stockpile is destroyed,

  • Yarrow: "Yes. Very well done."

Defeat Scar Leader

More Scars show up through gates.

  • Yarrow: "Is that? Yes, it is."
  • The Freelancer: "What? Who?"

A Scar leader shows up to the fight.

  • Yarrow: "That big Scar. Junkmaw. A Plague. Known to work with many bad people."
  • The Freelancer: "I’ll see what I can do."

The Freelancer fights Junkmaw and defeats it.

  • The Freelancer: "That thing is down. No more Junkmaw"
  • Yarrow: "Ah-ha! Take that, Junkmaw. Let’s see about those Arcanists."

Free Arcanists

The Freelancer opens the cage, freeing the Arcanists,

  • The Freelancer: "There you go—you’re okay."
  • Arcanist Field Researcher: "I can’t thank you enough. I wasn’t sure what was going to happen before you got here."
  • The Freelancer: "Arcanists are safe. Only cuts and bruises. Call the Sentinels to pick them up."
  • Yarrow: "Already done. Good. Nothing more to do here. Check on Freelancer Rythe."
  • The Freelancer: "Got it."

Locate Freelancer Rythe

Freelancer Rythe is not in the vicinity and her link is not reachable.

Locate Rythe's Work Site

The Freelancer flies to the new coordinates to reach Memorial Gate.

  • Yarrow: "Rythe, you see any Scars in your area? Freelancer Rythe?"

Only static is heard for an instant, no word from Rythe.

  • Yarrow: "You… get over there, you hear me?"
  • The Freelancer: "I hear you."

The Freelancer reaches a new Scar camp.

  • The Freelancer: "Camp located. It’s a mess."
  • Yarrow: "And now. There’s no Rythe. No Arcanists!"
  • The Freelancer: "Only Scars."
  • Yarrow: "Vlast! Rythe, where are you?"

Eliminate Scars

The Freelancer fight more Scars.

  • Yarrow: "Scars never get this close to Fort Tarsis."

After defeating the Scar swarm, the freelancer checks on a broken equipment.

Investigate Site

  • The Freelancer: "Yeah, there is no sign of the Arcanists or Rythe."
  • Yarrow: "Search the Area. Find them."

Search for Rythe

The Freelancer scans the area to find Rythe’s location. It leads into a cave under Fort Tarsis, Tarsis Bypass.

  • The Freelancer: "Scar bodies. Away from the camp site."
  • Yarrow: "Anything else?"
  • The Freelancer: "Bullet holes."

Search Tunnel

As the Freelancer is traversing through the nearly dark tunnel, they hear Rythe’s voice.

  • Freelancer Rythe: "Nothing gets past me!"
  • The Freelancer: "Hear that? Sounds like a war."
  • Freelancer Rythe: "Who’s next? You want some? Come and get it, you bastards!"

When the Freelancer is deep inside the tunnel, they see Rythe fighting Scars

  • Freelancer Rythe: "You’re late to the party!"
  • The Freelancer: "Rythe!"

Eliminate Scar

The Freelancer encounters another powerful scar called Steel Cutter among other scars. Both Rythe and the Freelancer fight the Scars valiantly and defeat Steel Cutter. The Freelancer notices the Arcanists cowering in fear behind some equipment.

  • The Freelancer: "Found them. Everybody’s a little banged up, but alive. Nothing got past Rythe. She’ll be okay."
  • Freelancer Rythe: "Damn right."
  • Yarrow: "(Celebratory laughter.) Good! Very good, my friend. Sentinels are on their way."
  • Freelancer Rythe: "Glad you made it. My trigger finger was cramping up."

Post Expedition

The Freelancer returns to Fort Tarsis and speaks with Yarrow in the Enclave

Return to Yarrow in the Fort

Yarrow is waiting in the Freelancer Enclave

Speak with Yarrow

  • Yarrow: "Ah, very good work out there with the Arcanists. People want to believe Freelancers have their backs. After Freemark, belief hard to come by."
  • The Freelancer: "Glad I could help. How’s Freelancer Rythe doing?"
  • Yarrow: "Good!"
  • The Freelancer: "She put up a hell of a fight."
  • Yarrow: "Of course. She knows I would be angry to write her story for the wall. But my young friend, she’s alive! This is good story to tell. People will hear of it."
  • The Freelancer: "Think that’ll help around here?"
  • Yarrow: "Oh, yes. Now, Freelancer Rythe is recovering down by the Forge, if you want to check on her. I will keep an eye out for contracts. Never fear."
