Expedition Stronghold Tyrant Mine Header Image

Meeting with Corvus turned out to be as expected as it could have gone. Tassyn was impressed by the work of the Freelancer so far, and decided to test the hero’s mettle. The Freelancer spoke with a self-proclaimed underrated Corvus Agent called Sev. Sev had discovered that Scars were making acid based weapons wanted to know from where the acid came, or from whom.

Hints and Suggestions

  • The dialog exchange between the characters will change depending on whether single player or multiplayer mode is played.
  • Remember to perform Feats to obtain XP for increasing Pilot Level and receiving Alliance bonus.
  • This expedition can be played multiple times.
  • Visit Monument Valley page to get familiarized with the sections and areas within this location.
  • Visit The Hive page to get familiarized with the Final Boss Arena
  • The first-time dialogs are unique in this expedition. Only first-time dialogs are transcribed in the Anthem wiki.
  • Since this is a repeatable expedition, it will continue to show the logs on the screen (top-right corner]] as though it wasn’t completed. This can be safely ignored and a different mission can be chosen from the Journal.
  • This expedition is extremely tough even in the easy difficulty setting.
  • If Seasonal Tyrant Mine is played before playing the Stronghold version for the first time, then unique dialogs will play in the Seasonal version and it will keep playing the first time version, until the regular stronghold version is played for the first time. After that, the dialog is taken from a pool.
  • Scar infantry can be easily tackled with any combat equipment. Items that do Blast Damage are more useful when they are in hordes.
  • For Scar Scouts and Scar Hunters it is best to focus on stripping their shields with lightning or Shield Breaker damage, then do further damage using any type.
  • Scar Destroyers' seeker mines are filled with acid which can reduce resistance of the javelin. They can deploy them infinite times. One mine may be tolerable, but several mines can automatically target a javelin and bring it down. Whenever a Destroyer is seen, defeat it quickly with any equipment.
  • Scar Hunters can do a lot of damage They must be a priority when tackling Scar enemies. Once their shields are stripped, freeze them using ice or render them flightless with fire and focus on the Weak Points.
  • Scar Enforcers have armored health. They don’t do much damage. Using armor buster, acid, or fire type damage is the best way to deal with them. Same goes for turrets.
  • Avoid being close to Workers, as they can explode and spill acid from their sacs to reduce a javelin’s resistance.
  • Digesters can shoot acid which reduces a javelin’s resistance. As with Soldiers, they can bite their targets and stagger them.
  • Be wary of Shaper nodes as they can cause a javelin to lose flight by heating up the thrusters. Same goes for Skorpion Webbing, which can either cause Overheat-Status-icon overheat or induce Webbed-Status-icon webbed status.
  • There are lots of Waterfalls and water bodies that can quickly help a javelin cooldown.
  • There are Scar Exploding Mines scattered everywhere on the ground, triggering which could do serious damage and hinder visibility for a second.
  • See Swarm Tyrant on how to combat it. Be extra careful the central mound and the arena’s walls as they can constantly do acid damage.
  • Unless otherwise specified, all directions are taken with reference to moving of the javelin from the entrance to exit. This means, when a Right-side or right wall is mentioned, the javelin will be facing the exit and the direction will be on the Javelin’s right-hand side. Similarly for the left.

Quest Chain

This expedition is a part of the Tales from the Strongholds. When the storyline is completed, an appropriate challenge is also completed, which will reward the Freelancer. The following are the related quests in order for this storyline:

  1. Tyrant Mine
  2. The Heart of Rage
  3. The Temple of Scar
  4. The Sunken Cell

Trivia (May Contain Spoilers)

  • There are 5 relics in this location, all volatile, making this the most dangerous location in Bastion as of 468 LV.
  • There are several pictograms found in the final few locations that lead to the Swarm Tyrant. Scars didn’t, make them.
  • There are at least 3 types of pictograms: skorpion, swarm tyrant, and generic.
  • The original version of this stronghold was called Scars and Villainy. This mission was used to give a demo of Anthem-logoAnthem before release.
  • Tyrant Mine is the largest stronghold by size.
  • In the Anthem Prima Guide, the location where Tyrant Mine takes place is given as Ruins of Shadowmark Subregion (subregions are called regions in the guide). In the final game, the location is in Academy Ruins Subregion.
  • Uniquely, an Anrisaur of Elite Enemy rarity shows up in some human ruins.
  • This stronghold is the only one to feature non-hostile fauna that can be attacked, in the form of Grabbits and Saurians.
  • This is one of the two locations where the two “Satellites” of planet Coda can be seen during night time, since Update 1.7.0.
  • As an addendum, when outside Fort Tarsis, the two satellites can only be seen correctly when inside or very close to Monument Watch Subregion (before Update 1.6.0), supporting the claim for the name Monument Valley to the location where the stronghold is experienced.
  • If this expedition is started after completing Return to the Heart of Rage, then the debrief conversation with Sev cannot take place, instead, the briefing of the Temple of Scar will take its place.
  • Sev at one instance says that the Scars are burrowing through the ceiling when inside the Relic Atrium. However, they are actually burrowing from underground.
  • Unless the Freelancer moves from the starting spot, the dialog exchanges will not trigger.
  • It is thought that the acidic weapons that Scars had been making were Seeker mines.
  • There are at least 3 hidden locations that need not be entered to complete this stronghold.

Below is the Script and Walkthrough for Tyrant Mine Stronghold:

Briefing

The Freelancer has a choice to either meet with Sev before starting the expedition or directly head into it. If the Freelancer chooses to be briefed, then the following choice-based conversation will trigger.

Shut down Scar Weapon Operation

As per the instruction given by Tassyn, the Freelancer heads into the Fort Tarsis Bar to meet with Sev. There is an exhausted looking man holding his drink.

Launch Expedition

The following choices are available if the Freelancer decides to get briefing from Sev. Otherwise, the expedition can be directly launched.

  • The Freelancer: "Are you… Sev?"
  • Sev: "In the flesh. You must be the Freelancer Tassyn hired. Huh. You actually look… capable."
First Choice in Conversation

[If the Left-side option is selected]
[You sound surprised.]

  • The Freelancer: "Were you expecting otherwise?"
  • Sev: "No. Well, sort of. I’m used to getting scraps, not resources."
  • The Freelancer: "I thought Corvus would have plenty to go around."
  • Sev: "Oh, they do. But I’m in the proverbial doghouse. Long story short, I pissed off the wrong people, and ended up in this shit hole."

[If the Right-side option is selected]
[One of us has to.]

  • The Freelancer: "Wish I could say the same for you."
  • Sev: "Ouch. I’m one of Corvus’ most underrated agents."
  • The Freelancer: "Who’s drinking on the job."
  • Sev: "I’m not a damn Sentinel. Besides, there’s nothing else to do in this shit hole."
Second Choice in Conversation

[If the Left-side option is selected]
[Fort Tarsis is a hidden gem.]

  • The Freelancer: "At first glance, Fort Tarsis may not seem like much, but–"
  • Sev: "It’s a shit hole. The bar doesn’t even have a name."
  • The Freelancer: "It used to, but–"
  • Sev: "I know the story. All the stories. Let’s just talk about the job."

[If the Right-side option is selected]
[That’s enough small talk.]

  • The Freelancer: "Uh-huh. You have a job for me."
  • Sev: "Yes. Sorry, I get complain-y when I’m bored."

[Choiceless Conversation Continues]

  • Sev: "Corvus has received reports of scars ambushing supply caravans."
  • The Freelancer: "Pretty standard."
  • Sev: "Except they were using some new acidic weapon. Extremely potent. Not the usual Scar-fare."
  • The Freelancer: "Scars are scavengers. They must’ve gotten the acid from somewhere."
  • Sev: "Great minds. I had a scout follow a trail of the gunk to a possible source. Your cypher has the coordinates."
Third Choice in Conversation

[If the Left-side option is selected]
[Good Work.]

  • The Freelancer: "Nice work, Sev."
  • Sev: "What kind of intelligence agent would I be if I didn’t give you a little intel? Let me know when you’re on your way."

[If the Right-side option is selected]
[That’s it?]

  • The Freelancer: "A possible location. That’s all I have to go on?"
  • Sev: "Didn’t realize you wanted me to go easy on you. Look, I did the leg work. Now it’s your turn to do the heavy lifting."
  • The Freelancer: "(Snorts.) And if this lead turns out to be a dead-end?"
  • Sev: "You’ll still get compensated. I’ll even throw in a drink for your efforts. Speaking of which… mine’s getting warmer. Call me when you’re on your way."

The Freelancer goes to the Forge to launch the expedition.

In Expedition

The Freelancer enters into the Monument Valley. Other allied Freelancers may also have joined to find the source.

Locate where Scars are Producing the Acidic Weapons

The Freelancer can see the overgrown cavern in which the team arrives. This is simply referred to as the Arrival Area.

Investigate Area

Depending upon whether or not the Freelancer spoke with Sev, the dialogs change at the beginning. Only when the Freelancer moves from the arrived position, will the conversations start. If the Freelancer Meets Sev for a Briefing

  • Faye: "Scars and acidic weapons. That’s a combination I could do without."
  • The Freelancer: "Last thing we need is these bastards getting creative. Corvus said they’ve hit multiple caravans."
  • Faye: "Speaking of Corvus, patching in Sev."
  • Sev: "Freelancer. Ready to put your javelin to the test?"
  • The Freelancer: "Just a normal day in Bastion."
  • Sev: "(chuckles.) Well, what’s not normal is the Scar activity in this region."
If the Freelancer Does Not Meet Sev for a Briefing
  • Faye: "Patching in our contact from Corvus."
  • Sev: "Freelancer. I see you’re not one for briefings."
  • The Freelancer: "I like to learn on the go."
  • Sev: "Can’t fault you there. Name’s Sev. Corvus has assigned me to counter Scar activity around Fort Tarsis."
  • Faye: "Since when does Corvus care about Scars?"
  • Sev: "Since they started making acidic weapons to attack supply caravans."
  • The Freelancer: "That’s a good reason."
Choiceless Conversation Continues
  • Sev: "We think this is where they’re making the acid."
  • The Freelancer: "Any idea how?"
  • Sev: "I want you to find that out. And put a stop to it."

This marks the end of the initial banter. The Freelancer flies away into the Minor Cave, whose end is a tunnel filled with Scar Explosive Mines.

  • Faye: "Freelancer, I’m detecting one–no, two Shaper relics nearby. Might be part of how the Scars are making these weapons."
  • The Freelancer: "Worth checking."

The Freelancer flies into the next location to reach the Anterior Relic. This type of relic is a Speaker Relic tethered to an Echo Lock Ruin.

  • The Freelancer: "Found the relic."
  • Faye: "Scars have done something to it. it’s gone volatile."

Silence the Relics

There are Scars in this area. The ruin is completely volatile and the Shaper Energy can be seen vividly fluctuating from the relic.

  • Sev: "For those of us who don’t speak Shaper… that’s bad right?"
  • Faye: "Obviously."

Defeat Scars

There are at most two Scar turrets. The Freelancer fights the enemies and destroys the turrets.

  • Faye: "Freelancer, you’ll need to silence the relic."

Echoes Delivered

The Freelancer must collect 8 echoes and deliver them to the ruin to silence the relics. Some of the echoes are in the immediate vicinity of the Anterior Relic and the Echo Lock Ruin.

Since Echoes can shake themselves loose and float around to an extent, some of them may be found further away, maybe even upwards in the Hillside Precipice

When at least 4 echoes are delivered, Faye comments on the Shaper energy.

  • Faye: "Energy levels are dropping. You’re halfway there."

By the Hillside Precipice, there are more echoes and even more Scars. There may even be a turret. The Freelancer fights all the Scars and defeats them. The Freelancer also collects all the remaining echoes and deposits them into the ruin.

Collect and Deliver the Echoes

The relic is silenced.

  • Faye: "Silenced. Good work, Freelancer."
  • Sev: "It looked like the Scars were bringing eggs to the relic."
  • The Freelancer: "The eggs were filled with acid."
  • Sev: "Let’s check the second relic. Put your theory to the test."

Locate Second Relic

The Freelancer flies to find the second relic through the Abysm Valley, a massive separation between the Anterior and the Posterior Relic areas. When the Posterior relic is in the vicinity, Faye gives a heads up.

  • Faye: "Relic’s up ahead."
  • The Freelancer: "This one’s a lot more crowded."
  • Sev: "Look! Eggs everywhere. Your theory’s got legs."

Defeat Scars

The Freelancer fights more scars gating-in along with four Machine Gun Turrets.

  • The Freelancer: "I’ll pat myself on the back after I’ve dealt with the Scars."

Echoes Delivered

Meanwhile more echoes have shaken loose and need to be deposited into the Echo Lock Ruin to silence the second Speaker Relic. At this point, 8 echoes can be found. The Freelancer finds and deposits them. More echoes are trapped inside Scar Cages. Immediately more Scars gate-in.

  • Sev: "Scars incoming!"

At this point a powerful scar called a Gatekeeper will come into the picture. This scar will have the key that helps unlock the Scars cages. The Freelancer fights and defeats this big scar along with all the other remaining scars.

Now the Freelancer collects the resupply unit holding the Key Item, in this case the key to all four cages. Once the cages are unlocked, the Freelancer deposits the echoes inside the ruin and silences the second relic for good! There is a Loot Chest Treasure Chest here, beside the silenced relic. Opening it will reward the Freelancer with loot and ember.

  • The Freelancer: "Relic silenced. I think we’re–"

Suddenly there is an ominously monstrous screech from somewhere in this valley.

  • The Freelancer: "What was that?"
  • Faye: "It came from below."
  • The Freelancer: "Of course it did."

Locate the Egg Source

  • Sev: "Hate to say it, but that thing is probably what’s producing the eggs. If we don’t get rid of the source–"
  • The Freelancer: "The scars will come back and keep making weapons. Faye, find me a way underground."
  • Faye: "Already done."

Find a Way Underground

The Freelancer flies through the Shaper Bridge to reach the underground way. There are Scar Mines and Skorpion Webbings that could be detrimental for movement. But the Freelancer is skilled enough to evade them, for the most part.

At this point, the Freelancer can go back to the Anterior Relic, under the Hilltop Precipice to see the horror the Scars have done on a skorpion.

  • Faye: "Looks like we’re not the only ones who don’t want Scars here."
  • Sev: "Hopefully, you fare better than that skorpion."
  • The Freelancer: "Yeah, I prefer my legs attached to my body."

The Freelancer defeats the Scars that show up, then continues to the Tunnel Entrance.

Search Tunnel

The Freelancer fights several skorpions while trying to traverse through the tunnels. The ominously monstrous screech can be heard again. As the freelancer moves further, several spider and skorpion webbings can be seen. Faye is disgusted as the Major Cave is reached.

  • Faye: "(Disgusted nosie.) Gross. "
  • Sev: "I could have gone my whole life without seeing that."

The Freelancer can fight the skorpions on the upper and lower levels of the Major Cave and reach its end. This is where an underground lake is found.

  • The Freelancer: "No way forward."
  • Faye: "You’ll have to go down."
  • Sev: "Into the water?"

The Freelancer jumps into the opening of Underground Lake. The Freelancer is free to explore all locations found in and around this lake.

  • Faye: "Wow. It’s almost peaceful down here."
  • Sev: "Skorpions can’t swim, right?"
  • The Freelancer: "Don’t worry, Sev. I won’t let them get you."

One such location is the “Anrisaur Room”. The Freelancer, whether lost or not, can enter this human ruin. When the Anrisaur sees the Freelancer, Sev freaks out!

  • Sev: "Watch out!"

The Freelancer can defeat this creature. If defeated, Sev will comment.

  • Sev: "He was a long way from home."
  • Faye: "Look at those ruins. Humans must’ve lived here at one time."
  • Sev: "before they all got eaten by Skorpions."
  • Faye: "Whatever happened, it’s not related to our mission. Head back when you’re ready."

The freelancer finally makes it to the surface on the exit.

Investigate Area

The Shaper Door opens to a large Relic Atrium When the freelancer reaches the center, there is a platform with a few Shaper Relics, and the entire area is surrounded by skorpion eggs.

  • The Freelancer: "That’s a lot of eggs."
  • Faye: "You know what they say–you’ve got to crack a few eggs to make an omelet."
  • Sev: "I don’t want that omelet."

At this point the relics go volatile.

Silence the Relic

  • Sev: "What is that?"
  • Faye: "Another relic. Careful, Freelancer. It’s unstable."

The relics explode and their fragments are scattered throughout the chamber.

  • The Freelancer: "I hate it when they do that!"
  • Sev: "What do we do now?"
  • Faye: "Gather the fragments, and silence the relics."

Fragments Delivered

The Freelancer must insert two fragments in each of the three relics. The 6 fragments are scattered across the chamber in three minor caverns attached to it. Once any two fragments are inserted, enemies show up.

  • Sev: "Heads up! Scars incoming!"
  • Faye: "How’d they get down here?"
  • Sev: "Bastards love to burrow."

The Freelancer can fight the Scars if interested, but silencing the relic is the priority. If fought and defeated, the Scar Hives can be destroyed. If destroyed, and totally, 4 fragments are inserted, more scars, extra tough, will show up. Otherwise, the existing Scars will continue to remain a nuisance.

  • Sev: "Hey, Freelancer–"
  • The Freelancer: "More Scars! I know!"
  • Sev: "These look extra powerful!"

The Freelancer can fight the Scars if interested, but silencing the relic is the priority. If fought and defeated, the Scar Hives can be destroyed. Finally, all 6 fragments are inserted. Immediately, the ominously monstrous screech is heard again.

  • The Freelancer: "Faye. Door’s still closed and there’s nodes everywhere."

At this point, the Relic Atrium has become a bit unstable releasing Shaper Nodes. The relic needs further stabilization.

Silencing

Faye creates a green Cypher Projected circle around the central platform. As long as the freelancer stays inside it, the relic continues to become stable.

  • Faye: "Give it a minute. It should work itself out."
  • The Freelancer: "Should?"
  • Faye: "Energy readings are stabilizing… albeit slowly. Just stay in the center. Any interference will cause the energy to spike again."

The Freelancer fights waves upon waves of skorpions while the silencing happens. The nodes could prevent the javelin from taking flight. When a fourth of the progress is seen, Faye gives a warning.

  • Faye: "Freelancer, stay on the platform."

The entire process could take anywhere between two and three minutes. Once done, the ominously monstrous screech can be heard another time.

  • Sev: "I don’t think our friend liked that."
  • The Freelancer: "Too bad. I’m just getting started."

At this point there is another Loot Chest Treasure Chest here, beside the silenced relic. Opening it will reward the Freelancer with loot and ember.

Locate the Egg Source

The Freelancer flies further into the Long Tunnel, filled with more skorpions, eggs, webbings and more!

  • Faye: "It got quiet."
  • Sev: "Doubt it’ll stay that way."

The Freelancer then heads into the Cavernous Atrium and then into the Pictogram Atrium. At the end of the pictogram atrium is another deep water lake.

  • The Freelancer: "It’s pretty dark in here."
  • Faye: "Throw down a flare. It’ll help."
  • Sev: "You Freelancers have tools for everything."

The Freelancer can throw down a flare, but it doesn’t actually do much to help. The Freelacer jumps into the water to go to the Exoskeleton Shed.

  • The Freelancer: "Back into the deep."

There is a monstrous exoskeleton shed by a massive skorpion here. And… vesnids are swarming around it.

  • Sev: "Oh… that’s just wrong."

The ominously monstrous screech is heard again, and it’s becoming annoying.

Investigate Area

The Freelancer flies into the nearby tunnel that finally opens into the Hive.

  • Faye: "Remember, it’s only a skorpion. But bigger."
  • Sev: "A lot bigger."
  • The Freelancer: "You’re not helping."

As the Freelancer enters the Hive, from the pipe in the center comes out the biggest skorpion that the Freelancer had ever seen–the Swarm Tyrant, mother of all skorpions, the source of acid filled eggs.

Destroy the Egg Source

The Swarm Tyrant descends and makes its ominously monstrous screeching, onto the mound in the center of the arena.

Defeat Swarm Tyrant

  • Sev: "It would be unprofessional to cut the link, right?"
  • Faye: "Highly."
  • Sev: "Dammit."
  • The Freelancer: "Next time, I expect big-ass bugs to be in the mission briefing!"

If the Freelancer Meets Sev for a Briefing

  • Sev: "You’d have to show up for that to help!"

If the Freelancer Does Not Meet Sev for a Briefing

  • Sev: "Even Corvus doesn’t know everything!"
Choiceless Conversation Continues

The Freelancer fights the Swarm Tyrant and defeats it! As it dies, it released several resources, loot and ember.

  • Faye: "Even the way it dies is… unnerving."
  • Sev: "I wonder how many beers it’ll take me to forget that thing."
  • The Freelancer: "I’m gonna go with eight."
  • Faye: "One for each of the Tyrants legs."
  • Sev: "No more skorpion talk. Please"

Post Expedition

Once the Freelancer returns to the fort, victorious, Sev will be waiting at the Bar.

Debrief

There is a choice to debrief with Sev. It is not necessary to do so. However, it is recommended. If spoken with Sev, the conversation is choice-based.

Talking to Sev

The Freelancer goes to the bar to see Sev, who is as usual, holding his drink.

  • The Freelancer: "Sev?"
  • Sev: "Freelancer! You’re… you’re here."
  • The Freelancer: "Afraid the Swarm Tyrant rose from the dead to eat me?"
  • Sev: "Can it do that?"
  • The Freelancer: "No, Sev."
  • Sev: "Oh, good. Seriously, though. No more skorpions. I don’t think I can take it."
First Choice in Conversation

[If the Left-side option is selected]
[They aren’t so bad.]

  • The Freelancer: "They’re just insects. Technically, co are Scars."
  • Sev: "That’s different. Scars are tiny bugs that make up a larger entity. Skorpions start off massive. And some of them have pinchers!"
  • The Freelancer: "So, if Scars one day had pinchers…"
  • Sev: "That’d be the day I put in for retirement."
  • The Freelancer: "(Chuckles.)"

[If the Right-side option is selected]
[Yeah, they’re not my favorite.]

  • The Freelancer: "I have to deal with a lot of nasties, but skorpions are the worst."
  • Sev: "Right? I think it’s the pinchers. Or the eyes. Or the amount of legs."
  • The Freelancer: "Don’t forget the way their bodies sometimes explode when they die."
  • Sev: "My drink’s not strong enough for this conversation."
  • The Freelancer: "(Chuckles.) I’ll change the subject."

[Choiceless Conversation Continues]

  • The Freelancer: "Have you heard any other reports of caravan attacks?"
  • Sev: "Sweet silence on that front. I have agents looking into the swarm that made the weapons."
Second Choice in Conversation

[If the Left-side option is selected]
[No news is good news.]

  • The Freelancer: "Hopefully they won’t cause us any more trouble."
  • Sev: "That they’ve mobilized to this extent isn’t a good sign. we might have an Escari on our hands."

[If the Right-side option is selected]
[That swarm’s a problem.]

  • The Freelancer: "Doubt we’ve seen the last of them."
  • Sev: "Wish I could disagree but they’re too organized. We might have an Escari in our hands."

[Choiceless Conversation Continues]

  • The Freelancer: "An Escari?"
  • Sev: "A powerful Scar with superior intelligence. They can command entire swarms to do their bidding."
  • The Freelancer: "Well, that sounds terrifying."
  • Sev: "No kidding. But until we know for sure, there’s no point worrying. Relax while you can, Freelancer."

Notes and Remarks

  • The briefing or debriefing not being necessary is exclusively a Stronghold related choice.
  • Several cortex entries are unlocked if spoken with Sev during briefing or debrief, which otherwise cannot be unlocked.
  • Starting conversation with Sev plays differently depending upon whether there was a briefing or not, including during the in-mission part.
  • There are two stronghold treasure chests which can reward up to 15 items (a combination of loot and ember each).
  • The final boss can also reward up to 15 items in the afore mentioned combination.
  • The dialogs in this expedition are the same as mentioned in this script only for the first time this expedition is played. Starting from the second time, all dialogs will be different, and lines will be taken from a pool that get rotated in-game. However, certain conversations may be skipped if actions are performed quickly, or additional conversations will show up if there is a delay
