The Mandible is a hidden place, located in the nation of Bastion, on the planet Coda, as of the year 468 LV.

History

The Mandible was an old mine abandoned a long time ago, when Blackshore was still Lakeshore. After the Scar encroachment, the Mandible was taken over by them.

In 468 LV, when the Freelancer was trying to help Brin find her missing Sentinels, this Enemy Mine had to be entered. In the same year, when Echoes of Reality took over Bastion, a captured Doctor Harken wanted the Freelancer to bring him an Escari leg to build a device to enter the cataclysm. This Escari was inside the Mandible and caused a lot of trouble by adding a Suppression Field into this hidden place, making it tougher to fight.

Geography and Layout

The Mandible Entrance

The Mandible is an abandoned cave. Like most hidden places, it has eight chambers. It is mostly filled with Scars and Scars. The entrance to the Mandible is obscure and is hidden by Scar debris.

The first chamber of the Mandible is tall with at least two levels. The top level has several abandoned artifacts and many Red Chimeric Minerals can be found here. Plants grow near the ceiling; mostly vines and bushes. There is an inactive Shaper structure hanging from the ceiling.

The second chamber is has old storage barrels on one side and ruinous structures on the other side. One side of this room has ample light for plant growth. This chamber is held together by decaying wooden plinths and rusting panels.

The next chamber is quite small and behaves like a simple hallway for passage between the second and fourth chamber. Again, everything here is held together by marginally stable arrangements. The corridor is curved.

The fourth chamber is the largest area within the Mandible. It has upper and lower levels with large crumbling Scars. Quite often, Vesnids and other bugs are found here. Beware, there are many Scar enemies found here. The area is also mined with Scar Explosives. Clearing these scars is recommended because they would otherwise contribute to the formation of an Escari.

Some machinery can be found on the lower level, which is the fifth chamber of this hidden place. Bones of dead animals, mostly Korox can be seen here. The level has stony plinths that hold the upper level. There is also shallow murky water on the ground. The place is lit by fire braziers.

The sixth chamber is a long corridor that leads into the next. This corridor has mor Scars and more minerals. It is entered through a small door. Plants don’t grow here, but small insects may be found. It also has some stalactite and stalagmite formation, although there is no sign of dripping water.

The Mandible Exit

The seventh chamber is the main chamber. It is not the largest, but it has several tall structures. There is a dormant Shaper Structure in the center of this chamber. There are more explosives here. Scars in huge numbers can be encountered here. Again, it is recommended to clear them out.

The final chamber is directly behind the tall Scar fixed to a cavernous wall. It has a tank on one side whose purpose is unknown. There is finally some vegetation here. This is likely from sunlight creeping through the broken structures.

They dumped us in a pit and threw down crude weapons. There was no cheering. No glory. They were seeing what we would do. No one did anything. Eventually, they hung a half-cooked grabbit over the pit. We understood. Not everyone gets to be a hero out here. Some of us just have to survive.

Trivia

  • This hidden place or its surroundings will look different during various seasonal times, which includes the presence or absence of various cataclysmic storms.
  • BUG ALERT: The Mandible has a bug which sometimes causes the health of anyone who enters it, to deplete rapidly until the javelin is downed. This can be annoying and unfortunately cannot be evaded if encountered, and will prevail throughout the server’s session. In this case it is recommended to simply respawn out of the Mandible quickly and reach out to Northern Bastion. It is also recommended to simply quit that server and enter a new Freeplay session.
  • The Mandible is one of the Hidden Places that is used during a mission.
  • The Mandible, like other hidden places, uses a unique instanced map which is not a part of Northern Bastion map.
  • The Cortex Entries for the Mandible cannot be obtained in the Library. Each time a loading screen is encountered when entering the Mandible, one entry is available to read, at random.
