Expedition Critical Objective The Fortress of Dawn Header Image

Since Finding the signet of General Tarsis, Faye found out a way to unlock the legendary Fortress of Dawn—a human stronghold which hasn't been open for nearly 500 years after it was sealed by Arden Vassa, when he and Magna Stral caused the Legion to divide into three.

If what Faye says is true, then the Javelin of Dawn will be inside the fortress. The Freelancer must enter the fortress and find a way to get that javelin so that it helps them in silencing the Heart of Rage for good.

Hints and Suggestions

  • The dialog exchange between the characters will change depending on whether single player or multiplayer mode is played.
  • Remember to perform Feats to obtain XP for increasing Pilot Level and receiving Alliance bonus.
  • This particular expedition may have a video walkthrough after the Cortex Entry section for documentation.
  • There are no text pop ups Text Pop Up in this mission.
  • There are several artifacts found lying around inside the Fortress. Interacting with them will allow Faye and Haluk to comment on their importance, and Cortex entries will be unlocked.
  • Make sure to scour each chamber thoroughly, because there are several hidden Treasure Chests in each of the 3 chambers. Do this before activating the gauntlets/trials.
  • Ancient Ash Titans are very tough enemies. Using Acid-icon Acid or Armor Buster-icon Armor Buster types of damages is the most effective way to fight them.
  • When only a fourth of the Titan's health remains, green and blue circles show up on the ground. At this time, it starts randomly throwing its attack. If the Titan is destroyed before the two circles meet, the rewards received will have a better chance of having a high rarity.
  • Use Acid-icon Acid, Armor Buster-icon Armor Buster, or Fire-icon Fire type damage to tackle Dominion Brutes or Turrets.
  • Use Ice-icon Ice or Electric-icon Lightning or Shield Breaker-icon Shield Breaker damages to deplete any shields of enemies.
  • Set the Dominion Valkyries on burning status by doing Fire damage to them and disable their flight until the status wears off.
  • Avoid defeating elite type Dominion Shocktroopers and remaining near them, because they drop loose death rattle grenades after their health is depleted, which self explode in a matter of seconds to do massive Lightning Blast damage.
  • The Frost Hounds are very vulnerable to fire attack.
  • It is also recommended to make use of any explosives scattered across the map during combat when in need.
  • Starting from a second playthrough, if Crafting Blueprints are unlocked, it is possible to craft combat equipment to improve the health and damage output of the Freelancer's javelins.

The Foremost structure of the Legion of Dawn, the fortress was the gathering place of free people during the battle against the urgoth. Its high walls and strategic position ensured that attack was difficult and never unexpected. The Volume of Tarsis describes how, at its zenith, the fortress housed thousands of people building javelins and striders and training warriors. Though the twin colossi statues that overlook the fortress were intended to intimidate the urgoth, it is thought that the urgoth never made an attack on the fortress, having met their defeat at the Dawn Gates. After Tarsis’ death, the decision was made to leave the fortress, and the free peoples headed south to Antium. The exact reason why has never been determined.

Video Walkthrough

Video guides are added for convenience and documentation of Anthem-logoAnthem. These guides show almost all possible incidents that may occur during each playthrough of this particular expedition.

The below video is on rotation. The cycle repeats after 4 days. The type of javelin used, the voice of the Freelancer, and any possible season changes during each rotation. If any Cypher Annotations are found, they are mentioned in the video’s description. Not all such annotations are in one video, but all 4 videos will make up for each other’s shortcomings, if any.

Trivia (May Contain Spoilers)

  • In the process of making the game more cinematic, Bioware directly continued with this mission without any real briefilg. The Briefing for this expedition actually takes place at the end of the final cut scene in The Tomb of General Tarsis.
  • The Freelancer is surprised at the view of the fortress even if they have already seen it before (during Freeplay).
  • This expedition marks the debut of Dominion Elementalist enemies.
  • The object identified as Legion Engineering Apparatus is also found in the Fort Tarsis Freelancer Enclave on display.
  • The three trials are modeled after the legend of General Tarsis.
  • These trials were set by Arden Vassa after General Tarsis' death, but before he sealed the Fortress.
  • This is the first time the Freelancer fights an Ancient Ash Titan.
  • The Freelancer saw the Titan and the Dominion because they were their greatest foes at that time. To any other lancer, the enemies would have been different.
  • This is the first time the voices of Arden Vassa and General Tarsis are heard.
  • The Trial of Valor takes two years for the Freelancer to complete. This means:
    • The Freelancer had to endure through every moment of their life since they became a Freelancer, including the attempt to Silence the Heart of Rage.
    • If the Freelancer had become a lancer earlier or later, the Trial of Valor would have taken an appropriate time equivalent to those. This is true for any new lancer attempting to become a Legionnaire.
    • Whatever the age of the Freelancer was, they are two years older when they complete the Trial of Valor.
    • This in turn reinforces how the mind can be altered through the misuse of Gateway Devices, and the Gateway that lancers and anyone linked to an amplifier, including cyphers.
  • The 3 javelin effigies (statues) are:
    • The effigy for Trial of Might is that of Magna Stral.
    • The effigy for the Trial of Resolve is Liatrelle the Unbroken.
    • The effigy for the Trial of Valor is Midderon.
  • The trials of might, resolve, and valor are represented by the primary colors blue, green, and red, respectively in their gauntlet.
  • This expedition gives the most number of Treasure Chests, except, maybe for Cataclysms and Freeplay with 5:
    • The first one in the room.
    • There are two in the second room.
    • After the Trial of Resolve is completed, one spawns under the effigy.
    • One in the third room.
  • The three trials show the qualities that the pretenders who claim to be the legacy of the Legion of Dawn must possess:
    • Paladins/Dominion: Might, which separates the weak from the worthy.
    • Sentinels: Resolve, which separates the fearful from the valiant.
    • Freelancers: Valor, which separates true lancers from the false.
    • The Legionnaires must possess all these 3 qualities, but they need net be balanced.
  • The Freelancer is the first person to become a Legionnaire in nearly 500 years and to enter the Fortress of Dawn.

Enter the Fortress of Dawn

The Freelancer prepares to launch the expedition.

Launch Expedition

The Freelancer, along with their team travel to the Fortress on Haluk's Strider.

In Mission

The Freelancer exits the strider in Sanadeen's Pass.

Enter the Fortress of Dawn

The Freelancer flies in the direction provided by Faye.

Reach the Fortress

  • The Freelancer: "Here we go. How's the connection, Faye?"
  • Faye: "Everything's clear. Head for the Fortress of Dawn. With the General's signet, I should be able to pass you off as a Lancer of the Legion of Dawn."

The Freelancer flies towards the fortress. Upon reaching Morning's Edge

  • The Freelancer: "Woah."
  • Haluk: "There she is. The Fortress of Dawn."

When the Freelancer reaches the edge of Vassa's Way, their flight is disabled.

  • The Freelancer: "Damnit, they've got a grounder."
  • Faye: "That means they'll be entrenched up ahead. Be careful. They've set up turrets. We need to take them down."

Clear out Dominion Forces

The Freelancer destroys the turrets and nearby Dominion enemies.

  • Faye: "One less turret to worry about. There's no way they brought all that over the bridge. They must be gating in."
  • The Freelancer: "Then we better shut them down."
  • Faye: "There are many energy signatures in the courtyard. Head for the fortress doors."

When the Freelancer goes towards the fortress doors by foot, the Dominion have indeed set up a gating device with anchors. This means, the Dominion are trying to bring in a larger force.

Anchors Destroyed

The Freelancer must now destroy 5 anchors to remove the shield from the gating device, in order to destroy it. On top of this, more Dominion forces are gating in.

  • Faye: "The gate's connected to those anchors. Break that and we shut this down."

The first anchor is destroyed.

  • Faye: "That's it! Take them all out and we can cut off the Dominion reinforcements."

When half the anchors are destroyed, more enemies gate in.

  • Faye: "More Dominion gating in!"

The final anchor is destroyed.

  • Faye: "I'm not picking up any more anchors. You're good to target the gate itself."

Destroy Dominion Gate

The Freelancer targets the gating device while fighting enemies. If the gate is still not destroyed,

  • Faye: "Mr Dominion gating in."

Tougher enemies start to pour in, until Legendary Enemies show up. The Freelancer finally destroys the gate.

  • Haluk: "Nice work! Look at that thing burn!"
  • The Freelancer: "Was that… praise? From Haluk?"
  • Faye: "Find the locking mechanism. If I'm right… the general's signet should open the door just like a key."

Enter Fortress

The Freelancer unlocks the fortress door using the signet and enters it.

  • The Freelancer: "Welcome to the Fortress of Dawn."
  • Haluk: "I can't believe we're seeing this."
  • Faye: "You're the first to stand in his spot for centuries. Look around. I want to see all of it."

Haluk is able to see everything like Faye, because he is likely connected to the Gateway and the amplifier chair, which allows users to see what a lancer sees.

Recover the Javelin of Dawn

Th efReelancer must find the location of the coveted javelin.

Search Fortress

The Freelancer looks around the fortress searching for clues and examining the artifacts in ruin. When they interact to read about a statue.

Later, the Freelancer interacts with an Ornate Masonry.

  • Faye: "Can you get a closer look at that?"

The Freelancer also interacts with a fallen container.

  • The Freelancer: "What's this?"
  • Faye: "That's a funerary urn. A Legionnaire is buried in here."

Finally, the Freelancer interacts with a Legion Engineering Apparatus.

  • Haluk: "What is that?"
  • Faye: "Something of Arden Vassa's. I'm certain of it."

The Freelancer then reaches the massive effigy. They interact with the mural under this Effigy of Might.

  • The Freelancer: "I swear I've seen this design before."

A voice, whose origin is unknown, can be heard.

  • Arden Vassa: "Behold the doors of Might! Whosoever wishes them open, place your signet! The trial of might separates the weak from the worthy. So says Arden Vassa."
  • Faye: "Arden Vassa! Is that really his voice? Over there, that looks like you could plug the signet in, doesn't it?"
  • The Freelancer: "Only one way to find out."

Insert Signet

The Freelancer inserts their signet into a slot under the mural. Immediately, their link with Faye is disconnected. Their gateway connection is severed and they are somehow transported to an unknown Shaper Ruin, lit by a blue sun.

  • Arden Vassa: "You think yourself worthy to claim a place among the Legion of Dawn knights? Then know this, a true Legionnaire must be tested. The greatest of us all Helena Tarsis, lured her foes into battle at a place of her choosing. There she brought them ruin and destruction through strength and guile. Prove yourself. Walk the path of General Tarsis. Bring forth your greatest foe. May your might prevail against the darkness."
  • The Freelancer: "Faye? What just happened? Faye?"

The Freelancer must find a way to escape this Gauntlet of Might.

Complete the Trial of Might

The Freelancer finds a giant Titan, laying dormant, in the middle of the ruin. When the Freelancer approaches it, the sleeping titan wakes up.

Defeat Titan

The freelancer fights the Titan, as it fights back.

  • Arden Vassa: "The Urgoth brought death and misery upon countless generations. Strongest of the foes of humanity. Tarsis made it her life's work to shatter their grip upon the world."

As the health of the Titan deteriorates, Arden Vassa divulges more stories to the Freelancer.

  • Arden Vassa: " The Urgoth outnumbered the Legion a hundred to one, and yet we had no fear, for our general held a secret power. And she knew to wait for the right moment to unleash it."

When the health of the Titan is near its end Vassa finishes his story.

  • Arden Vassa: "The Urgoth fell upon us like night itself. Then Tarsis unleashed the Voice of Heaven upon them. The mountains bowed to her will. In a great chorus of thunder, humanity's foe was crushed."

The Freelancer fights the Titan, which explodes upon its defeat.

  • Arden Vassa: "You pass the test. Before your might, the greatest of foes crumble. Yet more trials lie before you, lancer. Go forth. May the path lead you to the dawn."

Exit the Gateway

The Freelancer walks back the path shown, but is also free to explore this gauntlet. Once they reach the smoggy exit, they are back in front of the effigy of the Trial of Might.

Recover the Javelin of Dawn

  • Faye: "There! Connection's re-established! Where were you?"
  • The Freelancer: "I fought a titan! But I never left this spot, somehow?"
  • Faye: "It's a gateway device! That's why I lost our link."
  • The Freelancer: "Whatever it was, I used up real ammo in there."

Search Fortress

The door behind the effigy of the Trial of Might open up and the Freelancer ventures forth and finds another effigy. They approach it,

  • The Freelancer: "Another part of the legend of General Tarsis?"
  • Faye: "It's likely another gateway device. Be ready."

The Freelancer interacts with the mural.

  • Arden Vassa: "Behold the doors of Resolve! Whosoever wishes them open, place your signet. The Trial of Resolve shall separate the fearful from the valiant. So says Arden Vassa."

The Freelancer places their signet and is transported to a different reality of the Fortress of Dawn's courtyard. The courtyard is not in ruins and is lit by a green sun.

  • Arden Vassa: " The path comes to an end for you here. As it did for our general, as it does for us all. Your inevitable death awaits you, lancer. Go forth to face it."
  • The Freelancer: " Wait... "the path comes to an end"? Is this... the last stand of General Tarsis?"

Complete the Trial of Resolve

Hordes of Dominion enemies spawn to reach the point being defended by the Freelancer

Time Remaining

The point is defended completely through the progression of time.

  • Arden Vassa: " To race her enemy to helpless Antium, Tarsis took only a handful of knights. They had swiftness, but the enemy had overwhelming strength. And yet, Tarsis held her ground."

Complete the Trial of Resolve

More hordes of Dominion enemies spawn to reach the point being defended by the Freelancer. This time, the enemies are tougher, and many have elite rarity. The defending point moves closer to the door of the fortress.

Time Remaining

The point is defended completely through the progression of time.

  • Arden Vassa: " In the narrow mountain pass, the Legionnaires stood against the might of the urgoth horde. For if they wavered, if their fragile line broke, Antium would fall, and countless others with it."

Complete the Trial of Resolve

Even more hordes of Dominion enemies spawn to reach the point being defended by the Freelancer. This time, the enemies are tougher, and many are elity type. The defending point is very close to the fortress door.

Time Remaining

The point is defended completely through the progression of time.

  • Arden Vassa: "Tarsis met the urgoth leader in battle and was struck a mortal blow. Even as Tarsis knew her life was ending, she fought on. As her life's blood ebbed, she drove the enemy back."

Complete the Trial of Resolve

Even more hordes of Dominion enemies spawn to reach the point being defended by the Freelancer. This time, the enemies are tougher, and many have legendary rarity. The defending point is the closest to the doors of the fortress and much smaller this time.

Time Remaining

The point is defended completely through the progression of time.

  • Arden Vassa: "You pass the test. Under the weight of inevitable death, you did not break. Arise and go forth, lancer. One more trial awaits you. May the path lead you to the dawn."

Exit the Gateway

The Freelancer is free to explore this area before entering the smoggy exit. When the Freelancer returns, they find a treasure chest under the Effigy of Resolve.

Recover the Javelin of Dawn

  • Faye: "You're back. What happened?"
  • The Freelancer: "I re-enacted the Battle of Antium. Except with the Dominion, instead of Urgoth, I think."
  • Faye: "You've never seen a real urgoth. The trial is like a pattern, and your mind fills in the details."
  • The Freelancer: "I'm fighting my own memories? And they're kicking the crap out of me. Great."

Search Fortress

The door behind the effigy opens. The Freelancer ventures forth. When they reach the effigy, there is another mural under it.

  • Arden Vassa: "Behold the doors of Valor! Whosoever wishes them open, place your signet. The Trial of Valor shall separate the true lancers from the false. So says Arden Vassa."
  • The Freelancer: "Faye, I don't know if I can do this. I don't have much left. My armor is a mess, I'm running low on ammo, and who knows what's next?"
  • Haluk: "Hey. This is what Freelancers are all about. You can do this."
  • The Freelancer: "I hope so."

The Freelancer places their signet under the Effigy of Valor only to be transported to a different location. It looks like the Ruins of Freemark, lit by a red sun. But it turns out, the Freelancer has a bigger issue to deal with!

  • The Freelancer: "Wait… where's… my javelin?"
  • Arden Vassa: "You come to the final test. Prove your valor. A great calamity dwelled in the heart of the land, threatening to unweave the fabric of the world itself. So Helena Tarsis set forth to meet it in its own lair, where it was strongest, to end its rampage forever. Go forth lancer. Seek out and stop the disaster in its tracks, if you dare."
  • The Freelancer: "How? I don't even have a weapon"

An unknown voice is heard.

  • General Tarsis: "You don't need one."

Past events unfurl before the Freelancer's eyes. A Giant Ursix comes out of a storm

  • Owen: "You're out of time! Silence it!"
  • Freelancer: "It's not working."
  • Owen: "You're about to get eaten! Put your back into it!"
  • The Freelancer: "Got it!"

A beacon of light shows up. A javelin which glows like the morning sun.

  • General Tarsis: "The path of valor is well-travelled ground for you, I think."

The javelin becomes an orb of light and moves to a different spot. A javelin is downed while Dominion enemies are positioning themselves to fire.

  • Owen: "Uh… I can't move!"
  • Freelancer: "Your suit's overheating!"
  • Owen: "I'm gonna die!"
  • Freelancer: "Stay calm or you'll lock up!"
  • Owen: "Gun won't fire! This is bad!"

The orb of light becomes a javelin again.

  • General Tarsis: "You have been tested. Again and again."

The javelin becomes light-orb again. Titans show up. They are about to crush Haluk inside his javelin.

  • Faye: "Get back to the strider. This mission is over."
  • Haluk: "Look at this Faye! We have to silence the Cenotaph."
  • The Freelancer: "We have to get out of here."
  • Haluk: "Think about Miller and Adair, all the others. You're being a coward."
  • The Freelancer: "I'm no coward."

The light become javelin again.

  • General Tarsis: "You're past the point of testing now. There is only one place left for you to go."
  • Arden Vassa: " Remember this: Might can conquer a moment. Resolve can outlast a day. But valor must renew with every dawn. Walk the path—Lancer of the Legion."

The Freelancer, having become a Legionnaire, comes out of the gateway. They walk away from the Effigy of Valor and through the opened door.

  • Faye: "You're back! That was fast."
  • The Freelancer: "Actually, that trial took two years to get through."

The Feelancer walks towards an unknown javelin in the center of the room.

  • Haluk: "But you passed."
  • The Freelancer: "So far."

They examine the whole room and look at the javelin.

  • Freelancer: "Is that… what I think it is? I'm getting a closer look."

The Freelancer grabs a hold of the General's signet. There is a static in the comms link.

  • Faye: "Be careful."
  • Haluk: "The javelin of General Tarsis. Something's wrong here—I'm not sure what. Systems are overloading…"

The Javelin of Dawn opens for the Freelancer as they walk to equip it.

  • The Freelancer: "Faye? Haluk? I can barely hear you. Faye are you seeing this? Faye? Are you there?"

The Freelancer screams when suddenly their javelin locks up and they fall on their knees.

  • Owen: "They can't hear you."
  • The Freelancer: "Owen! (Struggles.)"

Owen walks past the Freelancer.

  • Owen: "Oh dear. Javelin not working, huh? That's a shame. “Click.”"

Owen is holding a device, whose button he clicks while saying the word.

  • The Freelancer: "What the hell are you doing?"
  • Owen: "Oh, come on mate. Isn't it obvious?"

Owen looks at the Javelin of Dawn. He takes a look at the Freelancer before looking back at the javelin.

  • Owen: "Hello gorgeous."

Owen climbs into the Javelin of Dawn and powers it up. He checks the javelin out and fires a blast of energy at a nearby wall.

  • Owen: "(Laughs.) Oh! Nice! (Laughs.)"

Owen flies towards the Freelancer who still can't move.

  • Owen: "It is finally my time. No more waiting. No more putting me on the sideline. If I side with the Monitor, he'll leave the fort alone."
  • The Freelancer: "How can you help the Dominion? You know what they've done!"
  • Owen: "I know exactly what they've done. We can't beat them."

Owen walks away.

  • The Freelancer: "Owen, stop!"

By the time the Freelancer regains control of their javelin, Owen is gone with the Javelin of Dawn.

  • The Freelancer: "Damnit!"

The Freelancer returns to the strider.

Post Expedition

Back inside the immobile strider, the Freelancer is distressed. Faye is in her amplifier, and physically unconscious. Haluk is repairing the amplifier chair.

  • The Freelancer: "Well, this is bad. Go ahead. Rip me a new one."

Haluk wiggles the wrench in his hand.

  • Haluk: "(Sighs.) Could be better, yeah. Amplifier's glitching, and I'm not sure what that son-of-a-bitch did to that motor. The strider's frozen in place until we get it fixed."
  • The Freelancer: "What about Faye? Is she alright?"
  • Faye [Loudspeaker]: "I'm analyzing the damage to the strider's system."
  • Haluk: "Hey… no talking until I get the connection fixed! You want to start a fire?"
  • The Freelancer: "So… we're stuck here while Owen gets away. And I thought things couldn't get any worse."

Haluk casually throws his wrench into his toolbox and stands up.

  • Haluk: "Slow down, will you? Right now, you're in no shape to go chasing after him. Give me a hand with this, would you?"

Haluk goes behind the amplifier chair.

  • The Freelancer: "We need to get the strider moving. We need to do… something to stop them."
  • Haluk: "Pliers."

The Freelancer hands over the pliers to Haluk, who begins working on the chair by kneeling.

  • Haluk: "See, that has always been your problem. You focus on what's up ahead instead of where you are."
  • The Freelancer: "Where I am is in the middle of the mess I made! I brought Owen abord, and look at what happened!"
  • Haluk: "Tape."

The Feelancer hands over the tape to Haluk.

  • Haluk: "Eh, you think you did this by yourself? Huh."

Haluk struggles to find the open end of the tape. When he finds it, he wraps some around a large wire

  • Haluk: "The lone hero screws up again. (Laughs.) Uh, gimme the… oh, damn."

The Freelancer replaces the tape In Haluk's hand with a socket wrench. Haluk smiles and stands up.

  • Haluk: "Yeah… (Grunts.) this is my strider. Nobody boards without my say-so."

Haluk begins tightening a bolt on the right-side of the chair

  • Haluk: "Hell, Faye can read people like a book, and she didn't even see this one coming soon enough."

The amplifier chair powers on and moves around.

  • Haluk: "Try the connection now. (Laughs.)"

Haluk throws the wrench on the floor and wipes rubs his hands.

  • Haluk: "You're a damn good Freelancer. The best I've ever seen, maybe. But you're not smarter than me and Faye put together, and you don't have eyes in the back of your head. Quit jumping in front of bullets that ain't been fired."
  • The Freelancer: "They have the javelin. So—what?—we watch while the Monitor captures the Cenotaph?"

Haluk smiles. Faye becomes physically conscious.

  • Faye: "I'm sorry. I got… distracted. I should have caught the sabotage during my routine armor checks."

As Faye opened her eyes, Haluk helped her stand up.

  • Haluk: "Enough guilt! You're both killing me. We've got work to do!"
  • The Freelancer: "What work? It's over."
  • Faye: "No… not quite. The javelin they stole won't work. I got a good look at the General's armor. It's like no javelin I've ever seen. I can only speculate on what some of the systems did. Or might still do."
  • Haluk: "Faye, just spill it, already."
  • Faye: "I think, most of the seals are keyed to the General's signet. And the Dominion can't run the suit properly without it."
  • Haluk: "Slows them down, but it doesn't help us any. (Grunts.)"

Haluk bends over to grab his cane.

  • Faye: "Slowing them down might be enough. I have info we pulled from the Fortress of Dawn's library. And I got that up-close look at the javelin itself…"
  • The Freelancer: "Wait, Faye… are you suggesting we build our own Javelin of Dawn?"
  • Faye: "Not the whole javelin—just the relevant seals, but… yes."

Faye and Haluk smile. Haluk nods approvingly.

  • Haluk: "Give me the plans—I can build it."
  • The Freelancer: "So you're “Arden Vassa” for us now?"

Haluk places his arm on Faye's shoulder.

  • Haluk: "Why not? I've built whole javelins from scraps before. Now I just gotta make a couple of seals. We might have to jump over a few flaming chimeras first, but we'll get it done."
  • Faye: "(Laughs.)"
  • The Freelancer: "Hey, flaming chimera jumping is Chapter One of the Freelancer handbook!"
  • Haluk: "(Laughs.) Get your javelin ready—I got a drive to fix. We're still in this race, people! (Laughs.)"

Haluk walks towards the strider's cockpit.

  • Faye: "(Laughs.)"
  • Haluk: "Oyoyoyoyoyoyoi."

Notes and Remarks

  • Before Pilot Level 30, all items found inside the hidden chests are Crafting Resources or loot.
  • The dialogs in this expedition will always remain the same as mentioned in this script. However, certain conversations may be skipped if actions are performed quickly, or additional conversations will show up if there is a delay.
