Hints and Suggestions
- The dialog exchange between the characters will change depending on whether single player or multiplayer mode is played.
- Remember to perform Feats to obtain XP for increasing Pilot Level and receiving Alliance bonus.
- This particular expedition may have a video walkthrough after the Cortex Entry section for documentation.
- Make sure to read the text pop ups that show around the memorials. This can be easily done with the help of a Sniper Rifle. Zoom and aim at the pop up marker that looks like
for the best view. - To deal with Fire Faced Kerns, have a look at the combat section of Outlaw Elementalist.
- Open the first Shaper Door by depositing 4 echoes inside an echo receptacle shaper ruin.
- Open the second Shaper door by solving a matching puzzle:
- Symbols on the “Shaper thing” must be matched correctly.
- The matching symbols are found by the first Shaper door.
- The Symbol on the left corresponds to the “Shaper thing” near the first door.
- The Symbol on the right corresponds to the “Shaper thing” near the second door.
- The Freelancer will have to hover while interacting with the “Shaper thing”.
- Outlaw infantry can be easily tackled with any combat equipment. Items that do Blast Damage are more useful when they are in hordes.
- For Outlaw Gunners and Elementalists, it is best to focus on stripping their shields with lightning or preferable, Shield Breaker damage.
- Scar Destroyers' seeker mines are filled with acid which can reduce resistance of the javelin. They can deploy them infinite times. One mine may be tolerable, but several mines can automatically target a javelin and bring it down. Whenever a Destroyer is seen, defeat it quickly with any equipment.
- Outlaw Shotgunners can do a sizeable of damage to the armor. Using armor buster, acid or fire type damage is the best way to deal with them. Same goes for turrets.

Cortex Entry
The Cortex Entry shows the description and the outcome of the expedition.
|
Outcome: Deep inside a Shaper ruin, you rescued a group of Arcanists, along with a collection of Shaper fragments. You stopped Diggs from kidnapping the Arcanists, but he did manage to steal some of the very valuable and very dangerous fragments. |

Video Walkthrough
Video guides are added for convenience and documentation of
Anthem. These guides show almost all possible incidents that may occur during each playthrough of this particular expedition.
The below video is on rotation. The cycle repeats after 4 days. The type of javelin used, the voice of the Freelancer, and any possible season changes during each rotation. If any Cypher Annotations are found, they are mentioned in the video’s description. Not all such annotations are in one video, but all 4 videos will make up for each other’s shortcomings, if any.
Quest Chain
This expedition is a part of the Shallow Grave Storyline. When the storyline is completed, an appropriate challenge is also completed, which will reward the Freelancer. The following are the related quests in order for this storyline:
Trivia (May Contain Spoilers)
- The conversation between Yarrow and the Freelancer during the briefing and the stating of the mission imply that Shaper fragments are a kind of Shaper relic.
- There are several text pop ups that show all around the arcanist tents and they indicate that the research has been going on for at least 10 days.
- The text pop up on the red book says:
- One of out perimeter beacons got tripped last night. They can be jumpy; hoping it’s nothing.
- The text pop up on the supply box says:
- An unorganized box of Arcanist Equipment.
- The text pop up on another red book says:
- Camp setup is well underway. Anxious to begin mapping area.
- The text pop up on the burning broken equipment says:
- Crates and boxes have been rifled through and looted.
- The text pop up on the boxes says:
- Updated previous records of area. Noticing increased activity (predators?) in area.
- The text pop up on the moved Arcanist Equipment says:
- Arcanist Elsin ordered us that each of us pack a bag for an extended expedition. Unsure why.
- The text pop up on the unmoved Arcanist Equipment says:
- Managed to open the door in the main tunned. Shaper Fragments. Challenging discovery.
- This mission makes use of a Hidden Place called the Bane Engine.
- The Shaper Fragment container inside the Bane engine reads:
- Carefully packed Shaper Fragments.
- The text pop up on the outlaw corpse reads:
- Killed due to high explosive.
- Interestingly enough, the mines that the Arcanists set up are made by scars. The reason why such mines were found in or around the Iron Serpent can be correlated with what happens during Apocalypse When?.
- The two text pop ups near Elsin read:
- A collection of stable Shaper fragments.
- Essential Arcanist supplies.
- There are three outlaw leaders that Diggs has made a deal with, because of whom, he gets more outlaws on his side: Redlegs Rix, Fire Faced Kerns, and Baker.
Below is the Script and Walkthrough for Tempting Target (Mission):
Briefing
Yarrow is waiting in the Enclave.
- Yarrow: "Okay, Freelancer, we have a situation."
- The Freelancer: "What’s going on?"
- Yarrow: "Contract came in from some nervous Arcanists. They uncovered a cache of Shaper relics. Such things are valuable to the wrong sort of people."
- The Freelancer: "And they’re out there alone? why didn’t they ask for protection before?"
- Yarrow: "Maybe they heard about a Freelancer selling Arcanists to the Scars."
- The Freelancer: "Diggs and his outlaws. Damn that guy."
- Yarrow: "He’s growing bold. More and more contracts compromised. People are talking. Bad talking. (Sighs.) And now this. These relics—they could do some real damage in the wrong hands."
- The Freelancer: "Understood."
Check on Research Camp
The Freelancer prepares for the expedition.
Launch Expedition
The Freelancer ventures outside the fort walls.
Briefing Gallery
In Expedition
The Freelancer comes outside the strider in North Rock.
Locate research Camp
- Yarrow: "Okay, so—Arcanists have discovered some Shaper fragments."
- The Freelancer: "And we’re assuming Diggs will make a play for them."
- Yarrow: "Very likely. Selling Fragments is big business. Scars, other outlaw groups, maybe even the Dominion pay for them."
- The Freelancer: "Not this time."
Travel to Research Camp
The Freelancer flies to the Iron Serpent.
- Yarrow: "their camp should be just up here."
- The Freelancer: "Not getting any radio chatter. Nothing."
- Yarrow: "I don’t like this."
Eliminate Hostiles
There are outlaw enemies digging through the Arcanist camp. The Freelancer fights them and stops them.
- The Freelancer: "Got some outlaws scratching around."
- Yarrow: "Take care of them first."
- The Freelancer: "Way ahead of you."
More outlaws gate in.
- The Freelancer: "This place is pretty torn up."
- Yarrow: "We are always one step behind these outlaws. We must change that."
When the Freelancer defeats all the outlaws, they are free to check the campsite.
- The Freelancer: "Looks like we bought ourselves some time. Hello? Anybody here? Lot of Shaper stuff around here. No wonder the Arcanists were interested."
- Yarrow: "Search the camp—maybe we find out what happened."
Find Researchers
The Freelancer can find several text pop ups all across the campsite: among books, boxes, equipment, broken artifacts etc., while looking for clues in the camp.
Search for Clues
The freelancer must identify 3 clues to deduce the whereabouts of the Arcanists. When the first clue is found,
- The Freelancer: "A few pages of a journal here."
- Yarrow: "Something, at least. Keep looking."
When the second clue is found,
- The Freelancer: "More journal pages. Drawings, notes, that kind of thing."
- Yarrow: "But nothing to tell what happened."
When the third clue is found,
- The Freelancer: "Wait—an unsent distress signal."
- Yarrow: "Let’s hear it."
The Freelancer interacts with the radio and hears Arcanist Elsin through the channel amid gunfire.
- Arcanist Elsin: "We’re under attack! Heading into the tunnels. We’ll close it all down once we’re inside. It’s all we can do. No, no—leave it. Take the resonators. Move!"
- The Freelancer: "They’re headed for the Shaper tunnels. On my way. They picked one heck of an escape plan."
- Yarrow: "No choice. Their fate with the outlaws was being captured and sold or worse. Let’s hope they can close the Shaper door like they said."
Enter Shaper Ruin
The Freelancer enters the Bane Engine and is under Giant's Crossroads.
- The Freelancer: "Okay. I’m in."
- Yarrow: "Careful now. We don’t know what Shaper nonsense is in here."
Investigate Ruins
As the Freelancer flies inside the Bane Engine, they hear outlaw banter.
- Outlaw #1: "Diggs said stay here."
- Outlaw #2: "Suits me."
- Outlaw #1: "After the door back there closed, I’m good staying put."
- Outlaw #2: "Yeah. Can’t trust any of this shaper stuff."
When the bantering outlaws encounter the Freelancer,
- Outlaw #1: "What the hell?"
The Freelancer can fight them and defeat them if they choose to.
- The Freelancer: "Okay, outlaws are locked in here as well."
- Yarrow: "Careful."
- The Freelancer: "That wasn’t the last of the outlaws."
The Freelancer sees a horde of outlaws.
- Yarrow: "I don’t see any Arcanists. Well, that’s good. Make sure we leave no threats behind, you hear me?"
- The Freelancer: "I hear you."
Defeat Outlaws
The freelancer fights a few waves of outlaw enemies.
- Yarrow: "No sign of Diggs yet."
- The Freelancer: "Not so far."
- Yarrow: "He would stand out in all of this."
There is a container of Shaper Fragments that has a text pop up. More and more outlaws begin to enter through gates.
- The Freelancer: "I’ve never seen so many outlaws. What’s the deal?"
- Yarrow: "Diggs must be getting popular. Adding to his ranks. We have to—"
- The Freelancer: "Stop him. I know."
Yarrow begins to help out on how to deal with outlaws.
- Yarrow: "Outlaws tend to rely on firepower and brute force. Use the pillars. Stay moving."
When all outlaws are defeated,
- The Freelancer: "I think that’s all of them for now."
- Yarrow: "Agreed. Now, get moving. We need to find those Arcanists."
Suddenly, several echoes show up all around the center of the Bane Engine.
Echoes Found
The Freelancer must deposit 4 echoes in an Echo Lock to open the Shaper Door. When the Freelancer picks up the first echo,
- Yarrow: "Okay, echoes. We know what to do here."
When the Freelancer picks up the second echo,
- Yarrow: "There we go. We’ll need a few more. Quickly now."
After the freelancer collects the third echo,
- Yarrow: "The outlaws were trapped when the Arcanists sealed up this place. This is a little good—and a little bad."
When the fourth echo is deposited, the Shaper door opens to a new chamber within the Bane Engine.
Continue Search
There are a few patterns of red, blue, yellow (or Green), and purple around the door and the tunnel inside.
- The Freelancer: "What’s all this?"
- Yarrow: "Looks like the Arcanists found ways to slow down the outlaws."
There are several Scar mines scattered on the ground. There is also a text pop up on the corpse of an outlaw.
- Yarrow: "This is very good! I mean, be careful. Traps could kill you too."
- The Freelancer: "Yeah, I got that."
As the Freelancer moves through the tunnel, they find a second Shaper door.
- The Freelancer: "This is it. They have to be behind this door. I hope they got here ahead of the outlaws."
- Yarrow: "Locking this place down brought the Arcanists some time."
- The Freelancer: "Yeah. Okay. Let’s get this figured out."
Unlock Door
The Freelancer must unlock the second Shaper door by solving a color matching puzzle. Theymust interact with a “Shaper thing” that seems to be undulating the black liquid in cymatic patterns.
- Yarrow: "We’ve got a Shaper thing to solve. Let’s get that done."
- The Freelancer: "On it."
As the Freelancer is solving the “Shaper thing”,
- The Freelancer: "Glad we got here before the outlaws figured this out. I hope they got the door closed in time."
- Yarrow: "And they didn’t get into worse trouble in there."
- The Freelancer: "You ever encountered this kind of thing in your time, Yarrow?"
- Yarrow: "What? Arcanists getting into trouble? Of course. They are equal parts brave and foolish. I understand this."
When the patterns on the “Shaper thing” are matched correctly, the second Shaper door opens.
Contact Arcanists
The Freelancer enters through the door to go further inside and meet with the Arcanists. There are three Arcanists who have barricaded themselves around Shaper fragments and other equipment. There are also two text pop ups around here.
- Arcanist Elsin: "Stop! Wait, no. you’re a Freelancer? I’m so relieved to see you. I’m Arcanist Elsin. I… all of us… we don’t know how to thank you. I must tell you: we couldn’t gather all the Shaper fragments. Some were taken."
- The Freelancer: "We’ll deal with that later."
Immediately, there is acommunication intercept from some Outlaw Rangers
- Outlaw Ranger #1: "Hey—over there!"
- Outlaw Ranger #2: "We’re not alone!"
- Outlaw Ranger #1: "Let’s get ‘em!"
- Yarrow: "Hang on—we’ve got more outlaws incoming."
- The Freelancer: "Got it. Elsin, wait here. Opening the door let all the bad guys in."
- Arcanist Elsin: "Of course. We won’t move."
Protect Researchers
The Freelancer must make sure the Arcanists are safe.
- Outlaw #3: "Got ourselves company."
- Outlaw #4: "We got a mark. Go!"
Eliminate Outlaws
The freelancer returns to the center of the Bane Engine to deal with the outlaws.
- Outlaw #5: "This place is ours!"
- Yarrow: "Outlaws are far more organized than they were in my day. They’ve grown too powerful."
The Freelancer fights the new outlaw enemies.
- The Freelancer: "The outlaws aren’t giving up."
- Yarrow: "Diggs must really be pushing them."
- The Freelancer: "Diggs is losing people here. All for a couple of fragments? I don’t get it."
- Yarrow: "He must’ve made a deal with someone."
More outlaws gate in.
- The Freelancer: "They need to stop shooting me out of the air."
- Yarrow: "You need to stop being shot."
At this point an outlaw leader called Fire Faced Kerns shows up. The Freelancer must stop this leader. When the Freelancer defeats Fire Faced Kerns, all other remaining outlaws begin to retreat.
- The Freelancer: "That’s all of them."
- Yarrow: "I’ve got help on the way for those Arcanists. But you heard Elsin. Some of the Shaper fragments are missing."
- The Freelancer: "That’s not good."
- Yarrow: "Not good at all, my friend. Come back—we’ll talk about what to do next."
The Freelancer returns to Fort Tarsis.
Post Expedition
The Freelancer gets out of their javelin to speak with Yarrow.
Follow up with Yarrow in the Fort
The Freelancer meets Yarrow in the Enclave.
Speak with Yarrow
- Yarrow: "You did well in that Shaper ruin. Arcanis Elsin and his people send their thanks."
- The Freelancer: "Just wish we could have gotten there sooner. Prevented all this."
- Yarrow: "The real problem is: we can’t have people getting attacked because they posted a contract."
- The Freelancer: "Diggs has been one step ahead of us this whole time."
- Yarrow: "The stolen links, my Freelancer friend. That’s how he knows so much."
- The Freelancer: "Right, from the grave sites."
- Yarrow: "Yes. But right now, we need to find the Shaper fragments Arcanist Elsin said were left behind."
- The Freelancer: "Meaning Diggs has his hands on some very dangerous things."
- Yarrow: "Let me see if any of Elsin’s people heard something that might help us."
- The Freelancer: "Okay, keep me posted."
- Yarrow: "Also, all this has people doubting us. Get out there and show them what real Freelancers do."
- The Freelancer: "I will."
