After the unexpected attack on the strider while recovering Raban Maur’s data archive, Matti is devastated. Sumner, along with the help of Erryl has found a way to track the perpetrators with the help from the Freelancer.

Hints and Suggestions

  • The dialog exchange between the characters will change depending on whether single player or multiplayer mode is played.
  • Remember to perform Feats to obtain XP for increasing Pilot Level and receiving Alliance bonus.
  • Make sure to read the text pop ups that show around the memorials. This can be easily done with the help of a Sniper Rifle. Zoom and aim at the pop up marker that looks like for the best view.
  • Scars and outlaw infantry can be easily tackled with any combat equipment. Items that do Blast Damage are more useful when they are in hordes.
  • For Outlaw Gunners and Elementalists, and Scar Scouts and hunters, it is best to focus on stripping their shields with lightning or Shield Breaker damage.
  • Scar Destroyers' seeker mines are filled with acid which can reduce resistance of the javelin. They can deploy them infinite times. One mine may be tolerable, but several mines can automatically target a javelin and bring it down. Whenever a Destroyer is seen, defeat it quickly with any equipment.
  • Scar Hunters can do a lot of damage They must be a priority when tackling enemies. Once their shields are stripped, freeze them using ice or render them flightless with fire.
  • Outlaw Elementalists are good at flushing hidden targets, so use the same strategy as Scar Hunters on them for best results.
  • Scar Enforcers and Outlaw Shotgunners have armored health. They don’t do much damage but can be annoying as they like to continuously keep their targets engsged. Using armor buster, acid or fire type damage is the best way to deal with them. Same goes for turrets.
  • To deal with the Mysterious Figure, look at the strategy for Outlaw Lancer.

Sumner wants to track down the person responsible for taking Raban Maur's data archive and attacking Matti's strider. Trace the movements of the hired outlaws to find the mastermind behind it all.

Outcome: Raban Maur's archive was recovered. The elusive mastermind behind the attack on Matti and other Arcanists was revealed to be an agent of the Symposium of Anshar, a mysterious secret society.

Quest Chain

This expedition is a part of the Riddles of Raban Maur Storyline. When the storyline is completed, an appropriate challenge is also completed, which will reward the Freelancer. The following are the related quests in order for this storyline:

Trivia (May Contain Spoilers)

  • The outlaw Troye is never seen or heard from again. This could be the name of the Mysterious Figure who appears towards the end of the expedition. But he could also be dead from the Scar ambush.
  • The map clue, when zoomed-in, gives a generic map which does to correspond to any of the current Sub Regions of Northern Bastion.
  • Several Legendary Enemies, especially among Outlaw faction show up in this mission, making it one of the few times Legendary Outlaws outside of Freeplay events.
  • This marks the first and only time a Legendary type Outlaw Gunner shows up.
  • The text pop up on the Arcanists reads:
    • A group of Arcanists from the academy, tasked with following up on Matthias’s research on Raban Maur.
  • There are three Arcanist bodies found during the skirmish in the Tower Road.
  • The radio dialog of the Mysterious Figure implies that it was one of the Arcanists within the Fort who had planned this all along. (This is later proven to be true.)
  • The cataclysm that destroyed Anshar was also the one that brough in skorpions to Coda.

Briefing

The Freelancer goes to see Sumner in Matthias Lab.

  • Sumner: "We need to find the person responsible for the attack on Matti and his strider."
  • The Freelancer: "Well, hello to you too."
  • Sumner: "Someone tried to kill one of me, so forgive me if I’m not in the mood for small talk."
  • The Freelancer: "All right. Fair."
  • Sumner: "This is bigger than the outlaws. They were hired. We need to find the person behind it. They took Raban Maur’s data archive too. Finding them is the only way to get it back."
  • The Freelancer: "Do you know where to start?"
  • Sumner: "We found shreds of a map on the outlaws. Erryl put it back together and got us the location of their camp. Raid it and see what we find."
  • The Freelancer: "Sounds like a plan."

Travel to Outlaw Camp

  • Sumner: "You’re headed towards the outlaws’ camp. The ones involved in the attack on Matti. We need to figure out who hired them and why. And if they have Raban Maur’s data archive, all the better."

The Freelancer flies to The Garrison at Velathra and sees a swarm of Scars

  • The Freelancer: "Scar. Looks like the outlaws were ambushed."
  • Sumner: "What a shame. I’m devastated. There could still be clues about who hired them. Provided Scars haven’t destroyed everything."
  • The Freelancer: "I’d better clear them out quickly then."

Eliminate Scar

A Legendary Enforcer will show up at this point. When all the Scars are defeated,

  • Sumner: "Those Scars make me itchy all over."
  • The Freelancer: "I’ll poke around to see if I can find anything."

Clues Found

The Freelancer must find two clues on the outlaws with the help of the radar. When the first clue is found, an audio log is heard.

  • Outlaw: "Troye, we’re headed to the job. Left the map by your gear. Keyphrase for the code is : “swamp lettuce”. I know the work’s dirty, but the pay’s good and we’re almost done. Bring the big guns, and try not to rile up the Scars on your way."
  • The Freelancer: "I need to find this map."

The Second clue is a map. The Freelancer collects it.

  • The Freelancer: "This I sit. This is the map to the next job, with coded instructions."
  • Sumner: "It’s a substitution cipher. I’ll use the keyphrase to work out the location. The recording called the work “dirty”. We need to stop them."

Investigate the Outlaws' New Job and Stop them

The Freelancer must find out who these outlaws are and why they are causing trouble.

Travel to Job location

The Freelancer goes to the location marked on the map.

  • Sumner: "You getting close?"
  • The Freelancer: "Calm down. Flying takes time."
  • Sumner: "I just have a bad feeling about this outlaw job."

The Freelancer reaches the location at The Tower Road.

  • Sumner: "Dammit! This was an Arcanist camp. I should’ve remembered that! Crawling with Outlaws! You have to take them down and make sure the Arcanists are safe!"

Eliminate Outlaws

Note that a Legendary Outlaw Gunner will show during this combat. The Freelancer defeats all outlaw Enemies.

  • The Freelancer: "The outlaws are down."
  • Sumner: "Have you located the Arcanists yet?"

Find Arcanists

The Freelancer must locate Arcanists with the help of the radar.

  • The Freelancer: "I found the Arcanists. They were murdered."

There is a text pop up on the bodies of the Arcanists.

  • Sumner: "Dammit! Why?"
  • The Freelancer: "There’s a recording."

Activate Recording

The Freelancer interacts with the recording to find out more.

  • Mysterious Figure: "The strider job was a failure. I will give you one more chance. You will find Arcanists camps at these locations. Get their research. No survivors. Fail again, and you answer not to me, but to my superiors."
  • Sumner: "That’s him. The one who almost killed Matti."
  • The Freelancer: "Superiors? He answers to someone else? How deep does this go?"
  • Sumner: "Do you know where they’re headed next?"
  • The Freelancer: "No. I’ll keep looking."

Find Next Location

The Freelancer finds a new clue with the help of the radar. The freelancer finds it and interacts with it.

  • The Freelancer: "I found another map! I know where they’re going to attack the Arcanists. And a data archive. Old. Wait… is this…"
  • Sumner: "That’s Raban Maur’s data archive! Matti will be happy, but the archive can wait. Lives are in danger. You know where they’re going. You have to get there, quickly!"

Travel to Arcanist Site

The freelancer heads to the Emerald Abyss through Blackshore.

  • The Freelancer: "Do you know why someone would want Matti dead?"
  • Sumner: "As someone who lives with Matti—yes, yes, I do."
  • The Freelancer: "You know what I mean."
  • Sumner: "No. this whole thing is fishy. Matti thinks it might be an academic rival, but…"
  • The Freelancer: "But…?"
  • Sumner: "We’ve had rivals before. It’s never resulted in an attempt on anyone’s life. That’s just noe how Arcanists do things."

The Freelancer reaches the Guardians of Dunar to see the outlaws gathered.

  • Sumner: "Murdering bastards. Take them down, before they do more harm."

Eliminate Outlaws

Several outlaws are trying to cause harm to the arcanists nearby, whose exact location is unknown to the Freelancer. A Legendary Outlaw Shotgunner will show up during this skirmish. The Freelancer defeats all outlaw enemies.

  • Sumner: "Good work! But what about the Arcanists?"
  • The Freelancer: "I’m looking!"

Find Arcanists

The Arcanists are nearby, and the Freelancer tracks them down.

  • The Freelancer: "I see them. They’re alive!"

Speak with Arcanists

  • Rescued Arcanist #1: "I thought we were dead. Those men they said they were going to kill us."
  • The Freelancer: "Why target Arcanists?"
  • Rescued Arcanist #2: "They were taking our research. One of them said the word “Anshar.”"
  • The Freelancer: "Anshar? The ancient Arcanist city?"
  • Rescued Arcanist #2: "It made no sense. Anshar doesn’t even exist anymore. I just know they were gathering everything they could and taking it to a hideout nearby."
  • The Freelancer: "I’ll take care of it. Will you be safe here?"
  • Rescued Arcanist #2: "The outlaws are dead. I think we’ll be fine for now. We’ll send out a distress signal. You have bigger things to worry about."

Travel to Outlaw Base

The Freelancer flies towards the hideout.

  • The Freelancer: "Did you catch any of that?"
  • Sumner: "The talk about Anshar? Yes. He must have heard wrong. Anshar was destroyed ages ago, in a Cataclysm. Doesn’t matter. You need to get to that outlaw hideout. I bet our mastermind is there."

The outlaw hideout turns out to be in the Sanctuary of Dunar. Several outlaws hordes start to gate in. Several turrets are fortifying the camp.

Find the Mastermind Responsible for the Attacks

  • The Freelancer: "This is where we found Maur’s lost documents!"
  • Sumner: "You were ambushed by outlaws then, too."
  • The Freelancer: "And now they’ve fortified. Turrets. Stockpiles. They want whatever we have on Raban Maur."
  • Sumner: "What about their leader? The one who hired them? Maybe you need to draw him out. Those stockpiles and turrets…"

Destroy Turrets

The Freelancer must destroy 3 turrets.

Destroy Equipment

The Freelancer must destroy 4 stockpiles guided by the radar while dealing with the outlaw horde. Destroying stockpiles will also provide ember, Weapon Parts, and Javelin Parts. The type of javelin parts depends on the javelin being used by the Freelancer. When 3 stockpiles are destroyed,

  • Sumner: "Keep going. I’m sure you’ll get his attention soon."

When the fourth is destroyed,

  • The Freelancer: "Here comes trouble. Definitely the guy in charge."
  • Sumner: "Get that bastard. His days of murdering Arcanists are over."

Defeat Mysterious Figure

The Freelancer must fight the Mysterious Figure who shows up while dealing with other outlaws. When the Mysterious Figure is defeated,

  • The Freelancer: "Leader’s down. Make sure you get the rest of the troublemakers. Then we can figure out what they’re after."

Eliminate Outlaws

The Freelancer defeats all remaining outlaws.

  • Sumner: "Search them. We need to know what they’re after, and why they’re killing Arcanists."

Search Clues

The Freelancer seeks for clues to the mystery and end up with a recorded audio log.

  • The Freelancer: "Found another recording."
  • Mysterious Figure: "Find the artifacts of Raban Maur. Bring them to me. Maur withheld his secrets from us. He paid for that insult with his life. You’ll share his fate, if you disappoint the Symposium of Anshar."
  • Sumner: "That’s him. The one behind all of this. He was never there at all!"
  • The Freelancer: "This was for nothing?"
  • Sumner: "No. not nothing. We got Maur’s archive. We saved lives. But the Symposium of Anshar? This implies they killed Maur, ages ago. But they’re not even real!"
  • The Freelancer: "What do you mean?"
  • Sumner: "People say they’re an ancient society of Arcanists. But—Just come back to the fort. It’ll be safer to talk there."

The Freelancer returns to the fort.

Post Expedition

Talk to Sumner about the “Symposium of Anshar”

The freelancer comes out of their javelin and goes to meet Sumner at the lab.

Meet with Sumner

  • Sumner: "There’s more to the recording you found. Confirmation that the Symposium of Anshar killed Raban Maur. The histories say he went missing. People assumed he went lost studying the Shaper instruments."
  • The Freelancer: "Back up. What is the Symposium of Anshar?"
  • Sumner: "Where would I start? There are so many tall tales, it’s impossible to know what’s true. They’re always described as a group of Arcanists, formed eons ago for some shadowy purpose. I thought the stories were just that. Stories. But they murdered Raban Maur back then, and they’re killing Arcanists now. They’re real, and they’re here."
  • The Freelancer: "That’s a lot to process."
  • Sumner: "Maur must’ve known his life was in danger. That’s why he hid everything."
  • The Freelancer: "Like his data archive."
  • Sumner: "The Symposium wanted it, but we have it. It could contain answers. We’ll start decrypting it immediately, and let you know what we find."
  • The Freelancer: ""
