Surging Shield is a Combat Gear or commonly, Gear, classified under the Heavy Support Gear category. From the gameplay standpoint, it is considered as Gear 3 or Support. Since Surging Shield is used during combat, it is considered a Combat Equipment. It it is possible to use gears to damage and defeat enemies and break destructible objects.

Surging Shield is an upgraded Shield Pulse. It is a Heavy Support Gear Gear whose fortified effect reduces incoming damage by 33%. This means, allies who are in the radius of fortification, take 33% lesser damage from enemies, when activated.
This item has a special ability, which is a procedural perk that can be activated by performing an action mentioned in its masterwork perk.
Masterwork Perk: Additionally regenerates shields through damage. Increases regeneration rate by 50%.

- The Masterwork Tarsis Last Stand obtained from loot drops will have a power level of 61, whereas the one obtained from Gear or Interceptor Warchests will have a power level of 66.
- Surging Shield can regenerate shields when enemies are damaged.
- The Masterwork perk affects allies only when they are within the fortification range when the Colossus uses Surging Shield.
- Gears are the only combat items that share their base design with their upgraded design.
