A Fort Cypher's Complaint

See Cortex Entry: A Fort Cypher's Complaint for More Details

Sentinel Larsen, this means you. See below.
Vule

To: Commander Vule

Several members of my team have voiced concerns about some Sentinels' javelins. To put it bluntly, they don't smell very good. Cyphers often receive sense impressions from the lancers with whom they're linked. This can include impressions of smell in sensitive individuals.

No fewer than three fort cyphers have reported becoming distracted by the stench. You can see how this might become a problem.

Might I ask for your cooperation in making sure your lancers pay attention to the padding within their javelins when they perform routine maintenance? The Sentinel's job is tiring, sweaty, and dangerous. I would prefer not to expose my people, or yours, to more risk than necessary.

Sincerely,
Cypher Setu

Born into the Antium royal line of succession, Dax is one of the most sought-after women in Bastion—much to her chagrin. Dax wishes she could simply be a cartographer like her Aunt Cardea, mapping the mysteries of uncharted lands. After embarrassing her stuffy family, Dax was banished to Fort Tarsis to learn discipline from the Sentinels.

Dear Diary...
Late for work again today. Vule was pretty huffy about it. But really, it's not like I was up all night dancing! I was guarding the wall. He should want well-rested lancers. Do I want to end up like Barr? Falling asleep in his javelin? No.
Barr is nice, though.

Agent Ryssa Brin (1)

See Cortex Entry: Agent Ryssa Brin (1) for More Details

Ryssa Brin is a driven Sentinel who was promoted at a young age after taking emergency leadership of the fort's defenses during a Scar attack that killed her commanding officer. Brin has been singularly focused on her job since she was a teenager—for which the other parts of her life have suffered, even if she doesn't see it that way.

Agent Ryssa Brin (2)

Sentinel Brin,
Your javelin's core-case belonged to your mum? You should have said so! I'll keep an eye that it's humming smooth, but otherwise leave it as is. Javelins have unique hearts—just like their pilots—and this one's yours.
Besides I want my favorite Sentinel happy.

Zoe, Fort mechanic

Agent Ryssa Brin (3)

Sentinel Barr,
Having reviewed the events, it's evident that the call was Brin's to make. You were not present. Had action not been taken, we would be arranging condolences for those families.
I don't care about "manners." Sentinel Brin is a diligent soldier. It would benefit you to see past her youth to what she's already done with it.

We were fine. We were through. The Scars were in retreat. We didn't even know the relic was there. It went volatile. Elementals spilling all over the place. I'd rather face a dozen Scars than an unstable Shaper relic. Give me something I can outthink or outshoot instead of a reality-warping death-machine.

Agent Yarrow (3)

See Cortex Entry: Agent Yarrow (3) for More Details

Without Freelancers, there is no future beyond the wall, no plans, no civilization—only rough survival. Does that sound crazy?

Yes, maybe it is.

People say we aren't needed. Yes, this is easy to say when you are comfortable behind the wall, with the Sentinels marching back and forth to keep the jungle away. Perhaps less easy from the inside of a moving strider, despite plates of steel between you and the monsters. And finally, not so easy for those who find themselves out there alone. There are no words, just silence.

An Uneventful Trip

See Cortex Entry: An Uneventful Trip for More Details

An uneventful trip so far, but it's been wonderful to see places I've only ever heard of in tales. We're coming up to some ruins that were either part of the Arcanist academy or a Sentinel outpost of some kind. So many ruins in this area. I can just imagine the Freelancers Three zooming around here, fighting chimera. Oh, we've stopped. I wonder why?

This pistol is a brawler's delight. At the end of a dash, the Close Encounter links with your javelin and increases the suit's melee capability. It was a heavy pistol they found in the hands of Sentinel Baylen Charl, who gave his life defending Governor Teak. They say he slew more than 100 Scars before finally falling. Close Encounter is a recent version of the weapon he was found still gripping... even in death.

Crimson Lancer Rewrite: Season Eleven, Episode Twelve
Back in Fort Tarsis, Freelancers Henley and Braxton carefully filed their incident reports to Sentinel command, to properly inform the fort about the acid Titan they encountered earlier, and this greatly improved morale in the fort because Freelancers and Sentinels should cooperate instead of perpetuating petty lancer rivalries. Also, Bianca fell down a well.

Dear Pa:
Things have slowed down quite a bit today. We're just waiting in the lower level for the Sentinels to deal with an issue. But it shouldn't be long before we can head back up. Detective Hops Mysteries

See Cortex Entry: Detective Hops Mysteries for More Details

The Detective Hops Mysteries is a radio serial featuring the exploits of Sentinel Quincy and his partner, a grabbit named Detective Hops. Airing in the afternoon, the series is popular with families.

Sentinel Quincy is played by the esteemed dramatic actor Renerson Ped, who first skyrocketed to fame playing young Midderon in the serial epic "Legion's End." After playing the teenage Midderon well into his thirties, Ped was brought on for a short stint on The Crimson Lancer. Detective Hops was created as a star vehicle for Ped, though it is his co-star, Brownie the Grabbit, that won the 467 Radio Drama Award for outstanding achievement in a drama for the role as Detective Hops.

Endless Siege (Weapon)

This autocannon increases your suit's cooling capabilities when the action heats up. It was indispensable during the first Scar attack on Heliost. It was described as a scorching hot afternoon when the insects first scuttled up the slopes. But this gun's ability to keep its mortars firing allowed the defending Sentinels to steadily punish the attackers. If not for Endless Siege, the Scars would have almost certainly overrun Heliost.

This ferocious weapon ramps up its rate of fire as you depress the trigger. It was heavily utilized by Dominion troops when the first incursions from the North began. Fort Tarsis' walls are thick, its lancers are loyal, and the people are strong. But we're far from invulnerable. Danger comes in stranger forms every year… Like that Cataclysm that brought lavender snow. Lavender snow! Everyone thought it was beautiful until it started to burn. So we set up fire watches and doubled patrols to stop the damage. And I thought I'd seen everything.

Fort Tarsis Prison Block (1)

See Cortex Entry: Fort Tarsis Prison Block (1) for More Details

Built into solid bedrock, the prison is one of the most secure and defensible parts of Fort Tarsis. During the War of Seven Luminaries, when the Fort came under attack, Sentinel Tran used it as a safe refuge for civilians to keep them out of the Scars' path.

Fort Tarsis Prison Block (3)

See Cortex Entry: Fort Tarsis Prison Block (3) for More Details

The prison block is hardly ever used. There's not such an abundance of Sentinels that any can be spared to watch inmates sit around in cells. (The following notes were recovered from a dead courier by Sentinel Dinix. Their author has not been located.).

Sitting here, looking at this tracking device glued to my nipple, and wondering where I glitched up.

As Zhim puts it, this is my "last chance." Posing as a hired gun, I'm to escort a strider across Bastion to the Antium Lock, and fight off anyone in the way. There, I'll hijack the strider, kill the crew, and transfer it to Zhim's axe-men. My pay is a "retirement" package and a one-way Regulator escort to the Mirelands. Guess I pissed Zhim off.

Never said why she wanted the strider. Must be important. Because she glued this tracker to my nipple.

It was my last good nipple, and I shall sorely miss it

You gave me many chances in life. But in the end, you mostly wanted me to go away. And I've done that now. So just leave us alone.

Freelancer Enclave: Argentum Tran's Sidearm

See Cortex Entry: Freelancer Enclave: Argentum Tran's Sidearm for More Details

This pistol belonged to the legendary Sentinel Argentum Tran. She was stationed in Fort Tarsis as a young officer, and fought on the front lines during the War of Seven Luminaries. After distinguishing herself in the battle at Junkhead Basin, she was recalled to the capitol, and left this gun to a close friend among her squadmates. She reportedly said, “It's never failed me, and neither have you. It's a perfect match.”

The sidearm has been passed down among active duty Sentinels ever since. And now it has been given to the Freelancers as a sign of lancer fellowship.

Recovered by Freelancer Rythe from an outlaw camp where former Engineer Alata “Chaingunner” Dalgren had built a makeshift forge; she was constructing javelin armor for her band to use against Sentinel patrols.

Freelancer Enclave: Junkhead’s Trophy

See Cortex Entry: Freelancer Enclave: Junkhead’s Trophy for More Details

This trophy, taken from the famous battle of Junkhead Basin, is an actual piece of Junkhead's “throne” and is thought to be the inspiration for all Scar banners.
The only other known fragment of Junkhead's throne was in the Freemark Enclave, and is believed destroyed.
The Sentinels of Fort Tarsis presented their piece of the throne to the Freelancers, as a sign of good faith and hope for renewed lancer cooperation in the future.

Freelancer Enclave: Scar Seeker Mine

See Cortex Entry: Freelancer Enclave: Scar Seeker Mine for More Details

Obtained by Freelancer Yarrow during the War of Seven Luminaries, this was the first completely intact example of Scar technology the Arcanists were able to study. Because of this unexploded mine, Arcanists were able to research better means of detecting and tracking Scar weaponry and disseminate these to cyphers across Bastion and beyond, vastly improving Freelancer and Sentinel effectiveness against Scars.

Freelancers (3)

See Cortex Entry: Freelancers (3) for More Details

The problem with Freelancers is their disorganization. How can they protect us from threats when their coordination is based on individuality? Their refusal to follow a leader has become an issue since the Heart of Rage incident. It is my opinion that the Freelancers should join the Sentinels as a protective unit, or get out of their way.

— From The Heart of Rage: A Discussion

Freelancers (4)

See Cortex Entry: Freelancers (4) for More Details

The public's confidence in Freelancers was shaken after the Freemark disaster and the failure to silence the Heart of Rage. Many looked to the Sentinels, an organization that not only escaped blame for Freemark's destruction, but grew in esteem since then. The Sentinels tried to maintain order both within and outside the Fort Tarsis walls, an impossible job that would lead to additional tragedy, despite their great courage.

Governor Springs (District)

See Cortex Entry: Governor Springs (District) for More Details

Governor Springs has held many different names over the years. First known as Upper Springs, it was changed by the ruling governor to “Flaxia Springs” after his daughter. The next governor, who had experienced personal clashes with Flaxia, changed the name to “Busybody Springs”. This, naturally, was addressed by the next governor in turn, who decided to put the naming of the waterway to a popular vote. Suggestions included “Splashy Splashway,” “The Babbling Brook” and “Water McWaterface.” Public disagreement over the name led to a riot in a local pub, until the commander of the Sentinels stepped in and named it “Governor Springs.” This name has not since been contested.

Grave Digger (Weapon)

See Cortex Entry: Grave Digger (Weapon) for More Details

A relentless weapon that requires calm precision. The initial burst of energy grows more damaging and destructive the longer the weapon is active. Notably used by Sentinel Commander Barris Djall at the Battle of Red Tomb Valley. During a stalemate against Scars, the Commander ordered his Sentinels to use the untested technology. Though a risky plan, the weapons allowed disciplined lancers to put constant pressure on the Scar hordes and secure a victory.

Your cooperation is appreciated.

High Road

See Cortex Entry: High Road for More Details

This strider path to Freemark begins at Fort Tarsis, makes its way past Arath, through Blackshore, and up to the lock just outside Shadowmark. In the early days of human freedom, the High Road had considerable Sentinel support, but between the migration of dangerous wildlife and unstable Shaper ruins, the endeavor was halted, and the Sentinels returned to Antium. The recent issue of Scars locating along the High Road has made travel to the north extremely dangerous.

Honor Valley Dam

See Cortex Entry: Honor Valley Dam for More Details

In 380, Arcanist Phredies Par came to Fort Tarsis with the daring idea of creating farmland in Honor Valley by diverting some of the water system. With approval from Antium, Par and a team of engineers and architects set forth to build the dam, completing it in 384. Farmers, Arcanists and Sentinels joined forces to plant and maintain the farmland, yielding more crop than most city terraces.

Central lookout tower for the dam area, named after Commander Yarrick Howel. Commander Howel arrived from Antium upon the commencement of building the Honor Valley Dam, and was particularly diligent in his care of the workers in the area. “He was tough,” recounts Sentinel Fatima Lan, “but that's because he cared. He wasn’t going to lose anyone on his watch. And until the Scars… he didn’t.” Howel died defending workers during the Scar attack.

Recent stability in local trade routes—which some credit to efforts and alliances made by the Freelancers—has brought a small influx of prosperity to Fort Tarsis. Some say there has been an influx in Regulators as well, but these claims are as yet unfounded.

Sentinel Vule has issued a statement reminding the populace that, while positive developments should be celebrated, it's tempting to ignore exploited loopholes during such times. He continued that no matter how "fun or frivolous," it's the people's responsibility to ensure newly acquired items have arrived to the fort through legitimate means.

The prophet returns, triumphant! They thought they could silence me, but the truth cannot be locked away for merely "creating a public disturbance."

But let's get down to the real issues here: The Plague. You've seen it. I've seen it. Everyone's seen it. No one is talking about it. But we all know that people are missing. Gone without a trace! Where are they? Will they return? No one is saying.

And now there's a Great Beast in the market. With an augur. Coincidence? Obviously not! The Beast is clearly the source of the Plague, and once again the people supposedly responsible for protecting the people of Fort Tarsis turn a blind eye. Are the Sentinels involved? How far does the corruption go?

Mail: Pet or Pest: the Great Grabbit Debate

See Cortex Entry: Mail: Pet or Pest: the Great Grabbit Debate for More Details

For years, grabbits were considered, at best, a source of nourishment, and at worst, a menace. Their sharp teeth can bite through metal, leaving holes in striders, supply crates, and clothing. Recently, however, we've seen a new grabbit trend—not as delectable grilled morsels on a stick—but as pets!

The Sentinels are understandably flummoxed and, as new grabbit regulations are put into place, I decided to talk to the most vocal contingents of whether grabbits are pets or pests!

Gwynn has been a proud grabbit mom for two years. A caravan driver, she found her fur baby, Gentleman, on the job, and takes him wherever she goes.

"They're loyal. Gent always lets me know when there's trouble. He stands on his hind legs and his ears twitch three times. Two times means he's hungry. Three means danger. Always. Can't tell you how many times he's saved my life."

They have caused damage throughout the north, where natural ripstreams have kept them from migrating over the mountains.

Radio

See Cortex Entry: Radio for More Details

Invented in antiquity, radio communication was not widely accepted until after the defeat of the urgoth. Radio towers are expensive to build, must be maintained against harsh weather and damage from wildlife (tesilars are especially drawn to such structures), and clearly announce the presence of a human settlement to potential attackers. Moreover, interference from Shaper ruins limits the effective range of even the strongest radio transmissions to only a few klicks. And yet for all the drawbacks, radio has saved countless lives. It allows lancer teams to coordinate in the field without a cypher. It keeps Sentinels on patrol in contact with the settlement they defend. Radio distress calls lead rescuers to downed striders and damaged javelins. And of course, everyone inside a settlement's walls relies on radio for news and entertainment.

Royal Proclamation:
It has come to my attention that Dominion soldiers were spotted in northern Bastion, and that Fort Tarsis may be under threat. I hereby extend the protection of Antium to Fort Tarsis. Sentinels will be sent to reinforce the walls, guard transports to and from Fort Tarsis, and monitor the Antium lock

"Scars are much simpler to deal with than people assume. You can't kill a Scar. It just bursts into a million little bugs that make up a new Scar. Instead, you must find their leader, an Escari or a Luminary, and kill it. The Scar swarm won't instantly disband, but they will become unfocused and disorganized. Then you just have to mop them up."

Tracking number: 3476.

Name of Complainant: Pirndel Blatch.

Address: #18, North Wall. Fort Tarsis

Complaint: I think my neighbor is a Regulator

Comments: I've noticed strange comings and goings at my neighbor's place over the past few weeks. No activity during the day, but then LOTS of activity with shady characters a few nights a week. There's a strange smell coming from their apartment (#19 North Wall) that I think is stinkhand. As you know, stinkhand is banned from Fort Tarsis because of its awful smell, and who would have access to that except Regulators? Thank you for your haste in this matter.

They looked carefully over the wall's edge. "Look at that Freelancer… blasting off into the great unknown. What good would we be if we left our post to traipse around the wilderness?"
Calahan looked at her. "Tarsis died to protect the people of Antium. If you're going to kick the bucket, it should be following her example. Not while off on a whim."

Vassa remembered the General's words when she smote the urgoth at the pass. That Antium, and all other settlements, must be protected even at the cost of her own life. And Vassa did say, "Go forth and know that as you stand sentinel at our walls, your vigilance and bravery bring peace to those who cannot pass the gateway."

Sentinel Bonfire

See Cortex Entry: Sentinel Bonfire for More Details

"Humanity is a fire in a world of darkness."

Sentinel Commander Adris Kamkua

A bonfire represents security, home and hearth. History documents Sentinels using bonfires to signal an enemy's approach, to warn of a catastrophic Shaper event, or to provide a clear destination for weary travelers. The fires brought order to chaos and created a place of sanctuary in a dangerous world.

Today, bonfires have become a monument to humanity's rightful place in the world. Sentinels continue their tradition by lighting seasonal bonfires in places of great danger; the flames are zealously guarded by Sentinels and Freelancers alike as an act of human defiance and power. Like banners and sacred places, the fires symbolize humanity's strength and unity to those who intend us harm.

Sentinel Stricklund's Sandwich

Get yourself two slices of crusty bread, made with whole Antium grain, if you can find it. Toast it lightly over an open flame, on a hot pan, or if you dare, in the jets of a fellow Sentinel. Did you know? "Make Toast in the Jets" used to be an initiation ritual for Sentinel trainees.

Now butter the toast to your liking. I generally go with the technical measurement known as the "wab," which is more than dollop and less than an ass-ton. Then apply a gentle scraping of a zesty mustard to your toast.

Get yourself some slow-roasted grabbit, sliced thin, and layer that on one piece of prepared bread. If there are drippings from the pan, make sure you drizzle that on too.

Pickles. Always the sour, briny kind. Sweet, if you want to be judged. Or you can leave them off entirely, if you're uncivilized.

Now slap that sandwich together and put it in your face. You can thank me later.

This sticky, timed grenade was instrumental in the Battle of the Terraces when Fort Tarsis was nearly overrun by the Scars. Sentinels deployed these grenades to great effect while retreating from the terraces. The explosive and acid effects slowed the Scars advance and allowed the defenders of Fort Tarsis to regroup and hold the walls.

Given their reputation and the state of their order, reticence in working with the Freelancers was understandable—but should not be beyond reconsideration. Yes, we differ in tactics, organization, and some would say, responsibility. Plus—chain of command. But protecting people? That's worth working together.

There were Scars everywhere. I thought we were dead, but then I heard a thump on our strider's roof, guns going off, and the voice of a Sentinel telling us we had an escort. And those Sentinels were organized. Within moments, they had taken names, accounts of the event, and got us moving. They were a bit chilly, maybe, but they got the job done. And unlike Freelancers, they weren't going to take off on another job, you know? Sentinels are dependable.

Hey everyone, one last update:
Nice work getting everything loaded and unloaded so fast! It seems like the Sentinels aren't chasing us, which is good. Whoever gave the little stuffed korox to the boss: That was a smart move. He seems much calmer now. If someone could keep an eye on the weather, that'd be great. I don't know about the rest of you, but I am all Icetided-out. I could use some sun.

A titan breeched the Shadow Lock last night. After blasting through the door for most of the afternoon, the titan succeeded in making its way to the edge of Shadowmark, but was felled by the cooperation of Sentinels and Freelancers. Our deepest thanks to the individuals who fought into the night to keep Shadowmark safe, and our hearts go out to the families of Freelancers Chenda Dhoe and Alston Xen, as well as Sentinel Kriti Ving. Their loss is deeply felt by all of us. A memorial service is planned for later this week.

Skystone Lock

See Cortex Entry: Skystone Lock for More Details

Built in 207 L.V., this strider port was built specifically to keep skorpions from migrating over the mountains into Heliost. Though the inscription reads, “May our paths go ever on together in peace,” the Skystone Lock has seen its share of violence and, in 392, outlaws captured the lock for a hijacking during the busy trading days of the great expansion. Scars captured the Lock again in 464; they hold the Fort Tarsis side of the lock, while the path to Heliost on the other side is guarded by Sentinels.

Scars have taken Skystone. Took down some nasties with flamethrowers, but then they retreated into the lock itself. Sentinels down. Not enough of us left. Must get back to the fort so the Chronicler can tell Heliost to be on guard. We cannot let the Scars get past the lock.

Good news first: The Sentinels never suspected a thing. Two of them even wished us a happy Icetide as we left with the goods. Even Chaingun didn't screw things up.
Now for the bad news: We got fifty-seven crates of Icetide sweaters. The boss is… not happy. Nobody mention snowflakes around camp for a few days. Or maybe years. Look, the timeline isn't important— Not getting shot because the boss is starting to lose it is what matters here.
Anyway, good work. We'll get drinks to celebrate—just don't tell the boss.

All agreed that they should head for Arath, where they could find a good night's rest and visit Old Flori. Once an important citadel guarding travelers along the high road, a battle between two titans outside its doors reduced the citadel to rubble, with only the watchtower remaining secure. Flori stayed behind when the other Sentinels left, continuing to keep the fires lit. Indeed, the last remaining structure had become known not only as safe haven for lancers, but a place where you would be well fed, for Flori was an excellent hunter and an even better maker of soup.

And so the Legion divided into three once the urgoth were defeated. Singing the Path of Resolve were the Sentinels, sworn to protect, their voices full with service to the people and high city walls. On the Path of Might, the Paladins were convinced that strength and force should lead the way. Lastly, the Freelancers followed the notes of valor sung by General Tarsis herself.

The three melodies sung together caused only discord, and none could bear the sound. So it was that one Legion became three. Spoke Vassa: “We must sing the Anthem as we hear it, and none should be forced otherwise.”

Waterfalls

See Cortex Entry: Waterfalls for More Details

There are dozens of waterfalls in Bastion, and while they are beautiful, they can also be deadly. Getting caught in the undertow of a waterfall without a javelin can result in drowning. During the great expansion of Fort Tarsis, going over local waterfalls in a barrel resulted in many deaths, leading to the banning of all waterfall recreation. Waterfalls should be treated with caution. For lancers, however, waterfalls can be very useful. Flying through a waterfall will cool a javelin's boosters and elongate flight time. This helps Freelancers, Sentinels, and other lancers travel through the perilous wilderness and reach people in need much quicker.
