Hints and Suggestions

  • The dialog exchange between the characters will change depending on whether single player or multiplayer mode is played.
  • Remember to perform Feats to obtain XP for increasing Pilot Level and receiving Alliance bonus.
  • Make sure to read the text pop ups that show around the memorials. This can be easily done with the help of a Sniper Rifle. Zoom and aim at the pop up marker that looks like for the best view.
  • Fauna can be easily defeated with any attack. When hordes of fauna show up, use attacks that do any type of Blast Damage.
  • Keep away from Worker type Skorpions as they can explode and do massive acid damage to the javelin decreasing its resistance.
  • The same process goes for Scars. However, take down the shields of Scouts and Hunters first.
  • Scar Hunters can do a lot of damage They must be a priority when tackling Scars. Once their shields are stripped, freeze them using ice or render them flightless with fire and defeat them with any other type of damage.

Quest Chain

This expedition is a part of the The Search for Knowledge Storyline. When the storyline is completed, an appropriate challenge is also completed, which will reward the Freelancer. The following are the related quests in order for this storyline:

  1. Lost Arcanist
  2. See in the Dark
  3. Contract: Arcanist Runes
  4. Hidden Depths

Trivia (May Contain Spoilers)

  • The Freelancer will only be able to see Arcanist Runes outside the walls after completing this mission. This is key to complete several challenges.
  • This is the first time a Legendary enemy shows up during combat: 2 Legendary Frost Wolven (in the beginning) and 1 Legendary Skorpion (Either Worker or Digester or Soldier in the end).
  • When Matthias talks about wires detecting energy, he means literal wires, which can be seen connected to the marker.
  • There is a text pop up on the marker device that reads:
    • The design and location indicates this market was built to last decades.
  • A text popup inside a cage that reads:
    • Scars will occasionally utilize echoes as bait to trap researchers working in the field.
  • It seems from the dialog that Matthias might have a phobia of skorpions.
  • Some echoes are underwater, which is the first time it is shown happening.
  • Although Matthias says that the runes won’t last for long, they will remain as they are until the Freelancer collects all of them.
  • If there are more than 1 person in the squad, some of the dialogs will be missed because echoes are spread out in a vast area. So, some players may not hear the dialogs that others might.

Below is the Script and Walkthrough for See in the Dark (Mission):

Briefing

Matthias is waiting in his Lab.

  • Matthias: "My savior—and the reason Scars aren’t feasting on my liver right this minute. Bloody Scars. The spike in their activity has really thrown off my research."
  • The Freelancer: "What are you working on, exactly?"
  • Matthias: "I’m looking for a lost Arcanist text, known as the Elysian Manuscript. It was inscribed by early members of our order and has been lost for generations. Some Arcanists believe that their writings could help us predict the behavior of Shaper instruments. Imagine knowing if a relic will create firestorms. Or skorpions. Or shatter you into a thousand pieces."
  • The Freelancer: "We could keep people safe."
  • Matthias : "Indeed. Every little piece of knowledge we can scrape together helps."
  • The Freelancer : "You’re making progress?"
  • Matthias : "The heroic work done by my assistants—may they continue to seek answers beyond this life—led to a discovery. Turns out there was a far more ingenious way to pass knowledge along. Invisible. Runes."
  • The Freelancer: "Invisible?"
  • Matthias: "Runes, yes!"
  • The Freelancer: "How do I…?"
  • Matthias: "Aha! I’ve piqued your curiosity! You’ll just have to continue on this adventure to find out, won’t you? My—our research has revealed a potential site that may answer our questions."
  • The Freelancer: "Just point me in the right direction."

Briefing Gallery

In Expedition

The Freelancer comes out of a Strider in the Hureen Slide district waiting for Matthias' instructions.

  • Owen: "Patching in Arcanist Matthias."
  • The Freelancer: "How did you learn about where we’re headed?"
  • Matthias: "From very old field notes… There was something the writer wasn’t saying. Something important they didn’t write down. I’m certain of it."
  • The Freelancer: "So, you had a hunch?"
  • Matthias: "A hypothesis."
  • The Freelancer: "Right."
  • Matthias: "What secrets must they hold?"
  • The Freelancer: "Let’s find out."

Locate Research Site

The Freelancer travels through a tunnel to reach the location given by Matthias. When the Freelancer reaches near the Guardians of Dunar district,

  • Matthias: "Here we are."
  • The Freelancer: "What am I looking for?"
  • Matthias: "A marker of some type. Something other Arcanists could recognize."

When the Freelancer reaches an artifact, covered in overgrown vegetation,

  • Matthias: "There’s a low hum of power. I’m sure it’s here. Some very aggressive wolven have taken up residence. Please clear them out."
  • The Freelancer: "That I can do."

Eliminate Wolven

The Freelancer fights a pack of wolven and frost wolven lurking by the artifact and defeats them.

  • Matthias: "Vile creatures. Alright. Let’s find that marker."

Locate Arcanist Marker

When the Freelancer reaches a device of some sort. There is a text pop up on the device which can only be seen before interacting with it.

  • Matthias: "There! Yes! Unusual design."

Examine Arcanist Marker

The Freelancer interacts with this marker device. An echo receptacle emerges out of the artifact. Several echoes pop into existence,

  • Matthias: "Hm. I’ve seen this before. It won’t trigger without the right stimulus."
  • The Freelancer: "Which is what?"
  • Matthias: "A shift in energy. We create a big enough change, the wires detect it, the marker triggers."
  • The Freelancer: "Like a fire alarm?"
  • Matthias: "Exactly! The Shaper object across from the marker is made for echoes…"
  • The Freelancer: "Got it. Let’s build a fire."

Echoes Collected

Collect 12 echoes and deposit it into the receptacle on the artifact. When the first echo is deposited,

  • Matthias: "It’s working, but the marker won’t trigger without a larger shift in energy. More echoes needed."

The Freelancer travels around looking for energy signatures of echoes. When they find one,

  • The Freelancer: "Got one."
  • Matthias: "I’m sure this will work."
  • The Freelancer: "I’m sure this will work. Keep going."

If near an echo,

  • Matthias: "We should be close"

The Freelancer may also need to fight skorpions while collecting echoes. When 3 echoes are collected, they need to be deposited before collecting more. When the first set of echoes are deposited,

  • Matthias: "Hm. No effect. Looks like we’ll need more."

The Freelancer goes to find more echoes. Some echoes are formed on the top of scorpion eggs

  • The Freelancer: "Looks like the echo attracted some slimy friends."
  • Matthias: "Ah, yes. Unpleasant. They’re fascinating creatures, but only from very far away… behind a wall… with lights on."

When near an echo,

  • Matthias: "Another echo should be close."
  • The Freelancer: "What do you think will happen when we trigger the marker?"
  • Matthias: "I can’t say for sure. My theory, however, is we learn something about the hidden runes."
  • The Freelancer: "Matthias. How did you do this work without Freelancer help?"
  • Matthias: "Slowly, my fearsome associate, slowly. This task alone would certainly require many uncomfortable nights in the jungle."
  • The Freelancer: "This book you’re looking for…"
  • Matthias: "The Elysian manuscript."
  • The Freelancer: "Right. What do you think you’ll find in there?"
  • Matthias: "Find? Well, Arcanists pursue the truth. But time twists truth. Hides it. The manuscript is a window to a very old truth."

Once the Freelancer deposits more echoes into the receptacle,

  • Matthias: "Good. The energy is shifting."

The Freelancer flies towards a Scar camp to look for more echoes. They have captured it inside cages.

Draw out Scar Leader

  • The Freelancer: "Got some Scars out here."
  • Matthias: "Leave it to them to be grubbing around. They have a special sensitivity to certain kinds of energy. Has to be related to their insect physiology. I wonder if—"

The Freelancer fights the scars in the hopes of finding a key to the cages.

Defeat Scar Leader

  • Matthias: "Don’t let them stand in your way."
  • The Freelancer: "Didn’t plan on it."

The scar leader is a Scar Hunter After the Scar leader is defeated,

  • Matthias: "Let’s get those echoes."

Cages Opened

Open the 2 cages to collect the echoes,

  • The Freelancer: "Why are they in a cage? That seems pointless."
  • Matthias: "Like a fishing lure—for Freelancers."
  • The Freelancer: "Oh. Clever. I… kind of respect that."

The Freelancer opens the cages and collect the echoes. When all 12 echoes are deposited, there is a loud thrumming sound,

  • Matthias: "That’s done it—the marker has been triggered!"
  • The Freelancer: "The Arcanist fire alarm."
  • Matthias: "Precisely."

Eliminate Skorpions

Several skorpions are attracted to the artifact. The Freelancer defeats them.

Activate Arcanist Marker

  • Matthias: "Finally! Now please, activate that marker."

As the Freelancer is interacting with the marker,

  • The Freelancer: "Let’s see what the Arcanists left for us."
  • Matthias: "Amazing!"

Several glowing diagrams show up in the vicinity,

  • The Freelancer: "What’s happening? What are those?"
  • Matthias: "Quickly now! Find all you can before they disappear. Those are runes, my capable associate—invisible runes!"
  • The Freelancer: "But I can see them."
  • Matthias: "Just for the moment! This energy surge won’t last."

There is a large glowing diagram on the artifact now.

Runes Collected

The Freelancer has to examines 6 runes. When the first rune is collected,

  • Matthias: "Got it. Hm. Very strange energy signature."

When more runes are examined,

  • The Freelancer: "So, runes—what are they?"
  • Matthias: "Secret writing. A technique lost and forgotten. To think the key to my work was right in front of me."

When even more runes are collected,

  • The Freelancer: "You got it?"
  • Matthias: "I did! Oh dear—the energy is starting to fluctuate."
  • The Freelancer: "Does that mean “hurry”?"
  • Matthias: "Yes!"

When the last rune is collected,

  • The Freelancer: "That’s all we’re going to get."
  • Matthias: "It should be enough. I have an idea how to find more of these in the future."
  • The Freelancer: "You think they’ll help?"
  • Matthias: "Yes. I’ll explain when you get back to Fort Tarsis. But first—thank you. These runes hold the key to finding the Elysian Manuscript. I’m certain."

Post Expedition

When the Freelancer returns to the Fort, they go and speak with Matthias to learn more about the runes,

  • Matthias: "Freelancer? Freelancer! Yes, excellent, you’re here."
  • The Freelancer: "Matthias. Need something?"
  • Matthias: "Need something? Oh, no, no… have something! You remember that strange energy the runes emitted?"
  • The Freelancer: "I remember you mentioning something while I collected them."
  • Matthias: "I managed to isolate and identify the energy pattern! I passed it along to your cypher…"
  • The Freelancer: "…who can now help me find those invisible runes?"
  • Matthias: "Which are the key to unlocking another impenetrable mystery!"
  • The Freelancer: "Which means you want me to go find more of them."
  • Matthias: "Yes. The more the better! With enough, I’m certain I can find the location of the Elysian manuscript. Certain! I’ve several leads. It’s very promising. Talk later."
  • The Freelancer: "You got it, Matthias."
