Location Special Scar Nest Header Image

Scar Nest is a special environment, located in the nation of Bastion, on the planet Coda, as of the year 468 LV.

History

After the Scar encroachment in 413 LV, the Scar started occupying the eastern parts of Northern Bastion, particularly the Eastern Reach Subregion and the East Gate Subregion, from which is where they are thought to have originated.

After locating the acid source under the Monument Valley in 468 LV, Corvus found out that an Escari called Scelos was behind the caravan attacks. While hunting down the escari, they found her last known location was somewhere around Scar's Duskheap. This is when Corvus contracted the Freelancer and other allied lancers to capture her and find out what the escari wanted to do, and why she specifically chose to hide underground in the Scar Nest.

Geography and Layout

Location Special Scar Nest Geography Image

Scar Nest is an underground construct filled with Scar equipment and has several natural caverns where Scars have built barely structurally stable buildings. The best way to describe this location is to call it a claustrophobic nightmare. Javelins can barely fly around, let along do combat adequately. This is an excellent example of how Scars have modified the terrain to suit their insect-selves to go around when not inside their javelins. Several drawings of what look like Shaper Keys can be seen all around.

Since Scar Nest is a Special Location, it has a unique map of its own with a unique geography not seen elsewhere, for the most part. Scar Nest can be experienced during day or during night. This location can only be experienced after Corvus contracted the Freelancer to investigate it following the thwarting of the Scar’s source for making acidic weapons and after the Freelancer silences the decade long Heart of Rage. Since then, the location can be revisited through an unexplained mechanism, very likely through a Gateway Device.

Totally, there are 15 areas explorable by the Freelancer in a limited timed capacity. Each of these areas is given a unique name for convenience. All directions are mentioned with reference to looking at the exit of the area, which forms the entrance of the subsequent area.

Scar Nest Area 01: Arrival Area

Entrance of the Arrival Area

Entrance of the Arrival Area

Arriving inside the Scar Nest through what seems to be an underground bunker, the most striking object to be witnessed is the presence of an unusual Shaper art done by Scars. For an unknown reason, a campfire is lit under it, as if it was being worshipped. When looked behind there is a bit of greenery, but that’s about it for this small cavernous area.

Scar Nest Area 02: Nest Entrance

Entrance of the Nest Entrance

Entrance of the Nest Entrance

The true entrance to the Scar Nest, is an enormous open chamber that is filled with Scar Structures. Why do Scars need these structures in an underground cavern, no one knows. In the center of the cavern, there is a bridge, on the sides, there are platforms and even a Scar Watchtower. There are also several metallic Scar Pods hanging around in one corner. The same scar Shaper art from the previous chamber is seen on the left and the right walls. The most striking feature in this location is the presence of a massive scar-constructed ring made of wood. This ring resembles Shaper Rings, but since it is scar-made, it looks hap hazardously flimsy. Of course, there are several javelins hanging from ropes. On the other end of the chamber is the exit.

Scar Nest Area 03: Slicing Chamber

Entrance of the Slicing Chamber

More scar structures with ramps, sheds, watchtowers and ledges. There is a small acidic pool of shallow water, fortunately, it isn’t as corrosive as the real stuff. While moving further, a location can be seen where the Scars have experimented with captured lancers with equipment like band saws and cages. Those javelins… they butchered them, the lancers in them, dead. Javelin parts can be seen scattered everywhere—this explains how several Scar javelins have parts from human javelins in them.

Scar Nest Area 04: Generator Room

Entrance of the Generator Room

Entrance of the Generator Room

As the name suggests, there is a generator in this chamber. This is a two-level chamber filled with Scar Structures and randomly scattered scar items, which the Scars clearly couldn’t be bother to keep organized. On the lower level, there are two massive cylinders, likely filled with fuel that the Scar use for all their activities, including inside their Scar Javelins. The upper level can be reached from, the ramp on the side, or just by flying into it through the opening. At the end of the upper level is the generator, powering up which will open the door to the next chamber.

Scar Nest Area 05: Major Tunnel

Entrance of the Major Tunnel

Entrance of the Major Tunnel

This is a long tunnel that leads out of the Generator room. Scars have placed a few crates and boxes in this area. It is surprisingly well lit. Some piping can be seen along the left wall that continues throughout.

Scar Nest Area 06: Makeshift Atrium

Entrance of the Makeshift Atrium

Entrance of the Makeshift Atrium

The makeshift Atrium has many scar structures from its beginning till the end, but there are also some natural waterfalls on the left wall, along with a crevice that sheds a decent amount of light into the area. There is an upper and a lower level with a couple of bridges connecting the left and the right side. Near the middle, there is a small depression, inside which there is some non-corrosive acidic water in a minor pool. Towards the exit, there is a large circular base or a platform, likely collapsed from the instability of scar buildings.

Scar Nest Area 07: Scar Pantry

Entrance of the Scar Pantry

Entrance of the Scar Pantry

As the name suggests, this is where scars keep their food. There are barrels and broken structures here. There are two levels, upper and lower. In the upper level’s left side, there is rotten meat found, which, turns out, is a Scar delicacy. There is a bridge separating the two sides, and the right side has ledges on either side of the exit. No one knew until now that Scars could barbecue! This rotten meat can be seen burning in a fire pit on the far end on the lower side.

Scar Nest Area 08: Minor Tunnel

Entrance of the Minor Tunnel

Entrance of the Minor Tunnel

This is a tunnel that leads away from the pantry. It is quite small, but unlike the previous one, requires support structures. The piping from the major tunnel continues all the way here as well. There are a few minor scar items here, including some crates.

Scar Nest Area 09: Gated Chamber

Entrance of the Gated Chamber

Entrance of the Gated Chamber

This is another massive area. When entering there is a clear distinction between the left and the right sides. With both a lower and two upper levels, this chamber has a lot going on. At the top of the entrance is a Shaper key. On the left side upper level, there is a special Scar Monument built with unique scar characteristics, not seen anywhere else. Its background is constantly lit with fire. On the left side, the lower level has a series of Scar Explosives that will do a number on anyone who enters it. There are also a couple of large white cylinders hers, along with some crates. On the upper level of the left side, there are more scar objects. The only way put is to destroy the exit. Luckily, there are several yellow explosives found scattered here. The entire area is supported using conical pillars.

Scar Nest Area 10: Upper Sewer

Entrance of the Upper Sewer

Entrance of the Upper Sewer

A primitive sewer system starts off behind the gated door. Now what purpose does this serve id not known at all. Each scar enemy seen inside a javelin or a Scar Tank, is actually a cluster of tiny little bugs, controlled by a completely different leader scar, who might not even be near them. These are usually in the form of a big scar, an escari, or a luminary. But bugs don’t need a sewage. Whatever the reason, it is not a pleasant location.

Scar Nest Area 11: Lower Sewer

Entrance of the Lower Sewer

Entrance of the Lower Sewer

In the middle of the rundown structures is the sewer path leads into a larger area with more sewage. This type of sewage can do acid damage to anyone inside it or in its vicinity, which makes one wonder why the acid’s source was required in the first place. The sewage system has such a foul stench that even cyphers can sense it through their Amplifier Chairs while they remain in faraway locations, through the gateway connection with a lancer’s javelin. Here, not just scar structures like platforms and sheds can be seen, but also strider cargo bays. On the far side, there is a closed Shaper Door. Of course, it cannot be opened, because that would make it easy to reach the end.

Scar Nest Area 12: Pillar Atrium

Entrance of the Pillar Atrium

While going further inside, the fortification becomes heavier than the usual. There aren’t a lot of plants or animals surviving inside this location, except towards the exit. This is a tall room with a massive pillar in the center. The pillar is connected to several bridges at various elevations to reach different doors. It is here that one would realize, that all the previous locations were actually connected to this atrium directly, only their doors could not be opened, because why would they!? Anyway, at the bottom, there is a shallow pool of water, above it are two upper levels, one with a Strider Cargo Bay, another with a Scar Watchtower. All other levels are above them and connected to bridges. The only way out is going by going to the top.

Scar Nest Area 13: Storage Area

Entrance of the Storage Area

Entrance of the Storage Area

This storage area is above the pillar Atrium. There are several scar caches, crates, boxes and sheds. This isn’t a special area and doesn’t provide any kind of significant value apart from what looks like a massive cylinder filled with an unknown substance in the center. Those without keen eyes will treat this as some kind of a wall. It isn’t a wall. As with all areas found in Bastion, there are tiny little details that people with superficial interests miss. This is certainly among them.

Scar Nest Area 14: Connecting Atrium

Entrance of the Connecting Atrium

Entrance of the Connecting Atrium

Out of the sewer, and finally into a breathable area. This is a cavern with some greenery. There is light coming out from some outer locations through crevices. This area was likely a Shaper Spine that is now overgrown and broken in the center. In addition to this, there is a small waterfall in the second half of the spine, stuck to the wall on the left side.

Scar Nest Area 15: Final Atrium

Entrance of the Slicing Chamber

Entrance of the Slicing Chamber

Finally, when the end of the road is reached, the Scar structures lead to a large open cavern, where light from the outside can be seen, along with the entrance to a massive Shaper ruin, which holds a special Shaper relic, which is simply called the Construct. The cave has a waterfall on the opposite wall of the exit. On this wall, there are two instances of the earlier seen scar Shaper art. On the left wall is another broken Shaper Spine, likely connected to the one in the previous chamber. The wooden Shaper Ring-like Scar Structure can be seen here again, but this time, transfixed to what looks like an unopenable Shaper Door. There is bridge connecting the near and far sides, under which is a shallow pool of water. Natural light from outside can be seen creeping into this area through the broken Shaper Spine, amid more vegetation. Beyond the wooden “Shaper Ring”, there is an entryway made of fully Shaper items, that leads to the door which opens into the Construct
