EARLY WARNINGS
See Cortex Entry: EARLY WARNINGS for More Details

For two years, the nightmare of that day in the Heart of Rage (Cataclysm) lingered. The Freelancer parted ways with Haluk and Faye, who were unable to reconcile the tragedy. The two were haunted by the disaster and were driven by their need to solve the mystery of the Anthem. But the Freelancer chose a different path. They looked for a fresh start in Bastion. Work was scarce, though the Freelancer happily accepted any available job along with a new cypher, Owen Corley. Together, they thwarted disaster when a Shaper relic spiraled out of control and threatened to spawn a new breed of monstrosity to wreak havoc on the land.

FORTRESS OF DAWN

The signet of Tarsis was more than a mere keepsake, it was a key. It opened the long-sealed Fortress of Dawn—the seat of General Tarsis, where all the greatest lancers in history had gone to prove their worth. Inside, the Freelancer realized the only way to reach the inner sanctum was to undergo the ancient trials that tested those wanting a place among the Legion of Dawn. Pitted against their own memory's worst battles, the Freelancer emerged victorious and gained entry to the hall. There stood the Javelin of Dawn. Before the Freelancer could claim their prize, Owen revealed his true colors and sabotaged the Freelancer's armor and took the Javelin of Dawn for himself.

FREELANCER DOWN
See Cortex Entry: FREELANCER DOWN for More Details

History is rarely kind to old warriors. Even as their immortal legend grows with feats of heroism, their body and mind begin to falter. Haluk, once a Freelancer of exceptional renown, came face-to-face with his own mortality in the Fortress of Dawn. Worse, it was at the hands of the traitor, Owen. But when faced with an unexpected Dominion attack, Haluk rallied and helped lead the charge to ensure he and the Freelancer escaped to safety. Their good fortune continued when Owen, in an unexpected fit of conscience, provided them the missing piece to finish their javelin.

LOST ARCANIST
See Cortex Entry: LOST ARCANIST for More Details

Searching for contracts, the Freelancer and Owen were approached by the mysterious Tassyn to track down missing Arcanist Matthias Erryl Sumner. The brilliant and reckless Matthias was exploring ruins near Fort Tarsis when he disappeared.
Following Matthias's radio signals, the Freelancer found the Arcanist in desperate straits, pinned down by Scars. The Freelancer routed the Scars and saved Matthias from certain death.

Here is my intel on Owen Corley since he disappeared with the Javelin of Dawn.
The Monitor, as promised, attempted to take troops into the Heart of Rage. It was a failure. Something went wrong with the Javelin of Dawn. I'm told that Owen was the pilot. He survived. I have no information beyond that.
The failure has not deterred the Monitor. He intends to conquer the Heart of Rage and Dominion reinforcements are reportedly on the way.

Just a quick note to wish you a Happy Birthday!
Actually, I'm not sure when it is.
Chances are it's not today, but you must have had one in the last year, and I missed it.
I guess Happy Belated Birthday is more accurate, unless it is actually today, in which case my original message stands.
Happy Birthday!
Mine is tomorrow.
I think.
I actually don't know the precise date.
The records were lost in a fire.
Let's call it tomorrow.
Happy Birthday to us!
Owen

I never drink, and maybe this is a bad idea, but I think I should send you a letter while I'm feeling... honest. I'm a little cranky about your old team coming back into the picture. Especially Faye. Sure, I'm feeling a bit replaced, but I'm trying hard to understand.
Look, that was a big deal when you went into the Heart of Rage. I wasn't there, but you shared how intense that was. I told you my feelings about my father dropping me off at the Satomi. I haven't told many about that. I feel like we have a good... sharing thing, which is good. And... I've tried to talk to Haluk and Faye about that mission, but they shut me down.
Bah, I'm taking it too personally. Too many feelings, probably? I tend to do that. Even when I was little, my mother used to say, "Owen, go to your room to cry. Come back when you're happy."
I'll be fine! Looking forward to playing my part.
We're going to do awesome.
I'm feeling better now just writing it all down.
In fact, I may not even send this.

Hey, it's me. (Sayrna)
I heard your cypher totally backstabbed you. I hope you're feeling okay, because something like that can really hurt, right? I know from personal experience how hard that can be. I had a friend once who I thought really cared for me but when the chips were down, she bailed. I don't want to say her name (Millel) but it still hurts me to think of her betrayal. I think you'll be able to find another cypher easily, like the way I met my friend Reevkah. Hey, you should drop by when you're back in the Fort. Maybe I can introduce you to my Uncle Vonnie. He's not scary, once you get to know him. Don't be a stranger!

Hey pal, I've been issued a citation from the Organization of Fort Cyphers—who knew that was even a thing?—for unprofessional behavior. Something about "activity unbecoming a cypher of my level and experience." Blah blah blah. There's a fine. I'm inclined to ignore it, but I won't have access to the amplifiers in the enclave until I pay. So, I paid it. Therefore, I'll need to keep more than half of the next few contracts to pay myself back. I mean, we need the amplifier, right? Thanks, partner. I'm good for it. You're the best. Owen

As I'm currently a little short on the resources required to pay for lancer lessons, I'm not quite where I hoped I'd be.
Luckily, I'm a natural.
Madame Chronicler has provided me with a number of books and I've spent many hours observing classes while hiding in a field of nearby stinkhands.
At this rate, I should be ready to take to the sky soon.
In fact, much sooner than the official classes would have allowed me.
That's the news, partner.
Things are going well.
The future is bright.
I'm the best.

Happy Birthday!
It's still not today, is it? That's fine.
I'm sure it's close enough.
It's got to be the right day someday, right?
I wanted to send you one of those postcards with an overly picturesque landscape image on the front, but there aren't any here.
No postcards of any kind, really.
So you'll just have to imagine the "Greetings from beautiful ____________!" and pointless gushing about the weather for yourself.

Owen is a cypher who works out of the Freelancer enclave in Fort Tarsis, a small town on the frontier in Bastion. Born into poverty, he was sent for cypher training at a young age when he first showed sensitivity to the Anthem. Owen spent most of his life studying at Bronelyn Satomi in Heliost.
Owen is an adventurer and mischief-maker at heart. After leaving Bronelyn, he traveled for a number of years before settling down in Fort Tarsis to work with the Freelancers. However, the few contracts available have left him uninspired and dreaming of grander things. He longs to operate a javelin of his own.

You first met Owen a little over ten years ago in the tiny city of Ponteix when he tried to steal from you. Despite this introduction, you had an unmistakable connection and spent the rest of your week having fun together.
Years later, after the failed mission into the Heart of Rage and rift with your team, your roaming and soul-searching took you to Heliost, where you bumped into Owen again. Since then, you've turned that brief friendship of the past into a solid partnership.

Owen Corley (3)

Fueled by resentment and frustration, Owen sabotaged your suit while going into the Fortress of Dawn. He stole the Javelin of Dawn, apparently intending to deliver it to the Dominion. He escaped the fortress without leaving any trail to follow.

Owen Corley (4)
See Cortex Entry: Owen Corley (4) for More Details

After Haluk was ambushed by Dominion at the Fortress of Dawn, Owen came to his rescue. A little worse for wear thanks to his dealings with the Monitor, Owen gave you a seal from the Javelin of Dawn to help complete the Dawn Shield. And then left you to fight a Fury by yourself, because some things never change.
