Owen is a cypher[2] who works out of the Freelancer enclave in Fort Tarsis. He also does so from Haluk's strider.[3] The newest member of the strider crew, Owen is a promising cypher whose ambition and enthusiasm have made him vital to the Freelancer's success as a team.[1] He met the Freelancer on a job a few years before the events of the game.[4]
Born into poverty and one of six siblings, Owen was sent for cypher training at a young age when he first showed sensitivity to the Anthem. At age eight, his parents decided it made sense financially to send him off. He spent most of his life studying at Bronelyn Satomi in Heliost. After leaving Bronelyn, he traveled for a number of years before settling down in Fort Tarsis.[5]
An adventurer and mischief-maker at heart, Owen is optimistic and ambitious though he is still learning his trade as a cypher.[6] He seems happy in this role, but due to the low number of contracts available, he dreams of operating his own javelin to help the Freelancers out.[2][7] He can get into trouble because of his urge to prove himself.[6]
Owen and the Freelancer first met in the tiny city of Ponteix about ten years ago from the in game setting. He had originally tried to rob the Freelancer, but they quickly made friends and spent the rest of that week having fun together. After the Freelancer leaves for training and then fails the mission into the Heart of Rage, they meet again coincidentally in Heliost and have been friends and partners since.
In Game Story[]
In the main story campaign for Anthem, Owen and the Freelancer are already friends and partners in their journey. He guides your character as their cypher through varies contracts and missions. We are first introduced to Owen while on a mission two years after the events at the Heart of Rage. The contract is to collect sensor readings from the early warning network for Fort Tarsis that senses Shaper relic energy. After gathering the readings, Owen then guides the Freelancer through silencing a volatile relic.
Back at Fort Tarsis, Owen tells the player to drop by his amplifier for "something fun." What you find is Owen stirring up trouble with a fort cypher, telling her his amplifier has been giving strange feedback when really Owen just wants a little mischief. This is when you first hear Owen express his desire to become a Freelancer.
Eventually, Owen betrays the Freelancer. Spiteful towards the Freelancer for keeping him from his dream to be a Javelin pilot, Owen freezes his/her Javelin and takes the Javelin of Dawn for himself as a bargaining chip to convince The Monitor that he accepted his offer to spare Fort Tarsis.
According to an email from Tassyn, Owen joined the Monitor's expedition to the Heart of Rage only for the Javelin of Dawn to fail before he could reach the Cenotaph.
The second time you talk to Owen you are accompanied by Haluk, in his custom made Javelin. It's explained that Owen saved Haluk's life from invading Dominion forces. In the picture, you see a scarred Owen Corley. He attempted to use the Javelin of Dawn, but scarred himself in the process, and departed with the dominion. He gives you a seal, before leaving the Freelancer and Haluk to defend yourself against the Dominion.
Dialogue[]
After betrayal: "Oh. And I think you are very lucky I was there to save your ass." After seeing Haluk's Javelin arm: "You built a Shield of Dawn? And it doesn't even work!"
Trivia[]
In regards to his training as a cypher, Owen has been stated to have gone to the "community college" equivalent.[6]
Owen is voiced by TJ Ramini.[8]
