Hints and Suggestions

  • Make sure to read the text pop ups found during the mission. This can be easily done with the help of a Sniper Rifle. Zoom and aim at the pop up marker that looks like Text Pop Up for the best view.
  • Wyverns can be defeated easily using any Elemental Damage or Acid damage dealing Combat Equipment.
  • Scars infantry can be easily tackled with any combat equipment. Items that do Blast Damage are more useful when they are in hordes.
  • For Scar Scouts and hunters, it is best to focus on stripping their shields with lightning or Shield Breaker damage.
  • Scar Destroyers' seeker mines are filled with acid which can reduce resistance of the javelin. They can deploy them infinite times. One mine may be tolerable, but several mines can automatically target a javelin and bring it down. Whenever a Destroyer is seen, defeat it quickly with any equipment.
  • Scar Hunters can do a lot of damage They must be a priority when tackling enemies. Once their shields are stripped, freeze them using ice or render them flightless with fire.
  • Scar Enforcers have armored health. They don’t do much damage. Using armor buster, acid or fire type damage is the best way to deal with them. Same goes for turrets.
  • To fight Voraxes the Swarming, see the combat section of Luminary. Make sure to use Armor Buster, Acid or Fire damages for best results.

Quest Chain

This expedition is a part of the Shallow Grave Storyline. When the storyline is completed, an appropriate challenge is also completed, which will reward the Freelancer. The following are the related quests in order for this storyline:

  1. Overdue
  2. Tempting Target
  3. Contract: First Response
  4. Bad Deal
  5. Impostor

Trivia (May Contain Spoilers)

  • More Wyverns are seen at Silent Path just like the previous time, but there aren’t any wolven
  • The text pop up in the Shaper Key reads:
    • These parts have been recently disassembled.
  • The names of the Arcanists trapped inside the cages are: Arcanist Ballo (M) and Arcanist Martul (F). There are two more arcanists who do not speak.
  • Flaying through the Signal Markers isn’t truly necessary, just flying past them will do the trick.
  • This expedition makes use of a Hidden Place called Scar Mine which is exclusive to this particular Agent Quest and cannot be entered through any other way, even in Freeplay.
  • The text pop up beside the audio log reads:
    • Supplies taken from the scavenged strider.
  • Voraxes the Swarming is one of the three named Escari that the Freelancer encounters, along with Damaris the Escari and Occixus the Countless.
    • Rust Reaver doesn’t count because it is a Scar Enforcer in the Story Missions and shows up in a Scar tank only in the Legendary Mission variant of Lost Arcanist.
    • Scelos doesn’t count either, as it ascends from an Escari to become a Luminary (Echelon) by the time the lancers reach it.
  • The subtitles wrongly spell impostor as “imposter”.
  • This mission confirms that other Freelancers also use custom javelin armor packs, as it says Diggs stole a javelin unit, and his javelin equips Reaper Armor Pack!

Below is the Script and Walkthrough for Overdue (Mission):

Briefing

A distressed Yarrow is in the Freelancer Enclave.

  • Yarrow: "Freelancer, I’ve got news. Could be very bad."
  • The Freelancer: "Let’s hear it."
  • Yarrow: "You remember Freelancer Diggs? That strider full of Arcanists?"
  • The Freelancer: "Damaged cargo bay door, right?"
  • Yarrow: "That’s the one. They never arrived to Fort Tarsis."
  • The Freelancer: "What do you mean?"
  • Yarrow: "I’m telling you. I don’t know. We need to find out what happened to them. I’ll keep trying to reach Freelancer Diggs."
  • The Freelancer: "Got it."
  • Yarrow: "Those people, they’re counting on us, you hear me?"
  • The Freelancer: "I hear you."

Locate Overdue Strider

The Freelancer prepares for the expedition.

Launch Expedition

The Freelancer goes outside the walls.

Briefing Gallery

In Expedition

The Freelancer comes out of the strider in Korox Shallows.

  • The Freelancer: "Any word yet on that missing strider?"
  • Yarrow: "No, after you got it moving. Noting."
  • The Freelancer: "Freelancer Diggs was confident they could make it."
  • Yarrow: "Get back to where we last saw it. Track it down."
  • The Freelancer: "On my way."

Locate Last Location

The Freelancer goes to the last location of the Strider in Silent Path.

  • Yarrow: "Okay. Should not be hard to track down a strider."
  • The Freelancer: "I’ll do a sweep."

Track Strider

The Freelancer must find 4 clues to track down the strider. They do this using the help of their radar. They can encounter fauna in the vicinity. When the first track is found,

  • The Freelancer: "Found the tracks. Heading out."
  • Yarrow: "Don’t see anything strange. Hm. We keep a close eye on the trail."

If the Freelancer decides to tackle the Wyverns,

  • The Freelancer: "Right, this is a bad place for animals. I remember."
  • Yarrow: "Everywhere bad for animals."

When the second clue is found,

  • The Freelancer: "Branch has been trampled. We’re going the right way."
  • Yarrow: "no signs of battle. And no word from Freelancer Diggs so far. I worry."

When the third clue is found,

  • The Freelancer: "There are a lot of old, abandoned striders out here."
  • Yarrow: "Agreed. A good sight for scavenging."
  • The Freelancer: "Looks like we got some tracks to follow."

When the Freelancer finds another track, there is a strange surprise waiting for them.

  • Yarrow: "Wait, look. That’s it. That is our missing strider."
  • The Freelancer: "Pieces everywhere."
  • Yarrow: "Yet I see no signs of attack—like back at the ambush site. It’s been scavenged by scars. That is true at least."

Examine Strider

The Freelancer decides to examine the scavenged strider’s cargo bay.

  • The Freelancer: "Cargo bay all cleaned out. Nothing here."
  • Yarrow: "Yes. Empty. No sign of the Arcanists. Search the area."
  • The Freelancer: "On it."

Follow Scavenger's Trail

The Freelancer searches the trail.

  • Yarrow: "Ah, I see. The scars hauled their prizes up a cliff over here. If we are lucky, where we find the parts, we find the Arcanists."

The Freelancer flies along the trail to reach a destroyed Shaper Key. Inside it is a text pop up. The Freelancer reaches Headless Hollow.

  • The Freelancer: "Back on their trail."
  • Yarrow: "Scars. No doubt about it."

There is a cage in where a few humans are held captive.

  • Yarrow: "A cage! You see it?"
  • The Freelancer: "I see it. It’s the Arcanists."
  • Yarrow: "Do not open the cages yet. Not safe."
  • The Freelancer: "Right. Scars first."

Rescue Arcanists

Several Scars show up from their hiding.

Eliminate Scars

  • Yarrow: "There will be many Scars here—but not enough to overpower a strider without firing a shot."

The freelancer fights the scars. But more begin to gate in.

  • The Freelancer: "There are always so many Scars."
  • Yarrow: "They are roaches. You see one, you know ten are not far."
  • The Freelancer: "These camps spring up faster than we can stop them."
  • Yarrow: "Yet we can’t let them gain a foothold, even out here."

When all the Scars are defeated,

  • The Freelancer: "Okay, that should be it."
  • Yarrow: "Let’s get those Arcanists safe."

Open Cage

The Freelancer must interact with a lock to open the 2 Arcanist cages. When the first of the two cages are opened,

  • The Freelancer: "Hi. It’s okay. I’m here to rescue you."
  • Arcanist Ballo: "Rescue? Oh, yes, please get us out of here."
  • The Freelancer: "Where’s your Freelancer?"
  • Arcanist Ballo: "Freelancer Kalish is dead. Killed by outlaws."
  • Yarrow: "Freelancer Kalish? What about Diggs?"

When he second cage is opened,

  • The Freelancer: "There you go—you’re okay. What happened?"
  • Arcanist Martul: "We were captured. Sold to this… monstrous Scar. You have to stop him."
  • The Freelancer: "We will. Yarrow, you got anything for me to follow?"
  • Yarrow: "Maybe. A weak signal. Very close."

Investigate Arcanists' Claims

A cypher creates a Cypher Projected Signal Markers for the Freelancer to follow.

Track Signal

The Freelancer flies through the signal markers to reach the location.

  • Yarrow: "Keep following the signal markers. We’re getting close."

When the Freelancer is around Scar's Duskheap,

  • Yarrow: "That prisoner said “Freelancer Kalish”."
  • The Freelancer: "Yeah. Who’s Kalish. And where’s Diggs?"
  • Yarrow: "Better question—who is Diggs?"

When the Freelancer reaches the destination, Scars are waiting for them.

Clear Out Scars

The Freelancer fights the scar swarm. During this process, several Scar Hives show up bringing in more Scars!

Destroy Hives

The Freelancer must destroy 3 hives and defeat the Scars. When the final hive is destroyed, a Scar Hatch leading to an underground scar lair is revealed under it.

  • Yarrow: "A weak signal is coming from that bunker. Bet we find out what happened to the strider down there."

Enter Nest

The Freelancer enters the Hidden Place through the hatch to reach Scar Mine.

Search for Evidence

The Freelancer traverses through the eerie Scar Mine.

  • Yarrow: "Something here is giving off a signal. Has to be something from our missing strider."

The Freelancer follows the direction shown by their radar. Several Scars begin to attack the Freelancer as they move further.

  • Yarrow: "Lots of strider parts, stolen cargo. Look for a black box, audio logs—anything to tell us what happened."
  • The Freelancer: "Got it."
  • Yarrow: "They claimed outlaws killed their Freelancer and sold them to the Scars."
  • The Freelancer: "You think Diggs is somehow involved in all this?"
  • Yarrow: "If so, he is no Freelancer."
  • The Freelancer: "So Arcanists being bought and sold, huh?"
  • Yarrow: "Yes. Very bad business."

When the Freelancer finds the stolen cargo, there is the strider’s black box, along with a text pop up.

  • The Freelancer: "OK, I found a black box. Can you get any info from it?"
  • Yarrow: "Hm. It’s locked. Cypher will help. One moment."

Eliminate Targeted Scar leader

A gate shows up while the cypher with Yarrow decrypts the black box. A giant Escari comes out of the gate! The Freelancer must now fight and defeat Voraxes the Swarming. As the Freelancer fights Voraxes he Swarming,

  • Yarrow: "You’re doing well. hard to fight in a smaller space., yes?"
  • The Freelancer: "Yes!"
  • Yarrow: "Blow off the joints on the knees! And the front shielding! Behind that, it is weaker."

As the Freelancer continues to fight,

  • Yarrow: "This kind of Scar is a plague. Destroy it."
  • The Freelancer: "Working on it!"

When half of Voraxes the Swarming’s health is depleted,

  • The Freelancer: "These Scar leaders are brutal. How the hell do they get like this?"
  • Yarrow: "It’s an ugly business, let me tell you."

At this point, more Scars show up to support their leader.

  • Yarrow: "Cypher’s still working. You keep fighting."
  • The Freelancer: "These things die, right?"
  • Yarrow: "Of course. Don’t get distracted!"

When Voraxes the Swarming is defeated,

  • The Freelancer: "Monstrous Scar down. Finally. That’s what you get for buying Arcanists. (Breathes.) Okay, did you get anything from the black box?"

There is no answer for a short duration from yarrow.

  • The Freelancer: "Yarrow? You there?"
  • Yarrow: "The strider was attacked by outlaws. Not Scars."
  • The Freelancer: "We knew that, right?"
  • Yarrow: "Their original Freelancer, Kalish, was killed. Their Arcanists were captured and then sold."
  • The Freelancer: "And Diggs?"
  • Yarrow: "Is an outlaw. Using a stolen unit to masquerade as a Freelancer. You come back. My friend. We will find this imposter, you hear me?"
  • The Freelancer: "Oh, I hear you."

The Freelancer returns to the Fort.

Post Expedition

Return to Fort Tarsis

Back in the Fort, the Freelancer goes back to see yarrow and find out what to do next.

Follow up with Yarrow in the Fort

The freelancer goes to the Enclave.

  • Yarrow: "Diggs is an outlaw. A damn outlaw! And we helped them do his work!"
  • The Freelancer: "The Arcanists we found are doing okay?"
  • Yarrow: "Yes, they’re safe. I fear they won’t be counting on Freelancers anytime soon."
  • The Freelancer: "That’s understandable."
  • Yarrow: "Just when we were making progress, y’know?"
  • The Freelancer: "What do we know about this Diggs guy? "
  • Yarrow: "Not much. Had to be behind those outlaws at the grave."
  • The Freelancer: "I remember that a bunch of Freelancer links were missing."
  • Yarrow: "That’s right! He could learn about contracts from those. Maybe a lot more. Coward! He knows nothing about the damage he is doing."
  • The Freelancer: "We need to watch for anything that Diggs might consider a target."
  • Yarrow: "truth. Meanwhile, you must continue your work. It’s more important than ever."
