FROM: Prospero
Hey there,
A few months back, if you told me there'd be a working Forge around here, I'd have said a Shaper relic scrambled your brains. But, here it is. I know because I've blinked a few times just to make sure it's all real. You lit the spark when you brought that ember back. This is the beginning of great things, my friend.
Come by sometime when you get a moment, even if it's just to talk. I've always got something on my mind and finally someone around here who'll appreciate it.
Take care,
Prospero

Finding Yvenia
See Cortex Entry: Mail: Finding Yvenia for More Details

Dear Freelancer:
We've never met, so this might be a bit strange.
I always wondered if there was anyone in the Legion of Dawn that was not just a lancer... the NAME of someone, you know? But now that you've found some of the lost tombs, we know. And you've given us Yvenia, the Forgewright.
I'll never be a heroic lancer (my gateway connection is pathetic and I have a heart condition), but I'm still of use. I repair what is needed. I guess I used to think that being a grease grabbit was an un-glorious job, but if the Legion of Dawn honored Yvenia for building and repairing... well, that gives us grease grabbits some cred now, doesn't it? It means a lot.
Sincerely,
Jekka Fain,
Forgewright

Freelancer,
You found us and got us out. Wasn't sure what we were in for, once we heard we were taking a trip to the Dominion. Maybe we were fools for trusting what we thought was a fellow Freelancer, but I refuse—we all refuse—to fall into that.
Freelancers stick together. That's what we do.

Hey, remember me? Varkas—we cleared a bunch of Scars out of a ruin up near Kashal for some settlers a while back. I heard you were the one who silenced the damn Cenotaph finally. About time somebody did it!
Anyway, you still owe me for the grenade launcher you broke when we ran into that scar turret. I'm sure you can scrape the cost out of your "Hero of Bastion" reward or whatnot.

Greetings from Abroad

FROM: Leyton
You'll understand if I'm vague on certain details. Nadira and I are busy on a sightseeing tour around the continent, enjoying our time together. Over dinner last night, we discussed how we have you to thank for that.
I wasn't sure I could adjust to the rigors of sightseeing again, given how my previous tours went, but this time it's different. It's for the right reasons. It helps that Nadira and I share the same goals and our talents complement one another. I'm lucky if I can keep up with her. Most of my days end with ice on sore muscles as she's out planning our next stop. In the end, we both enjoy sightseeing and I can tell you that the sights we've seen so far have been spectacular, though the locals haven't always appreciated our presence.
Oh, and Nadira says the "Please make us dinner, dear" idea didn't work. I cracked the eggs.
Best,
Leyton

Letter from Haluk
See Cortex Entry: Mail: Letter from Haluk for More Details

Hello Friend.
Surprise. I'm not much for letter writing but I thought you might want to hear about the new cause, er, adventure that I'm working on. And before you start thinking it, I'm not looking for any cash.
I'm just sick and tired of outlaws preying on young pilots and filling their heads with dreams of wealth and easy living. It's all lies. So I'm putting together a crack team of Freelancers—so far it's me and Freelancer Jani and a couple of other folks—called... something. Faye says we need a catchy name if we're going to attract more pilots to the cause.
Damn it, I think these kids are brainwashed, and those outlaw bastards shouldn't be able to get away with it. They recruit these kids who've got stars in their eyes and hope for a better life, then they treat 'em like disposable garbage. It's evil. I just can't let it stand.
Faye says that with the new Songbird amplifier, we can reach some of the more remote camps for the first time.
I'm not asking for you to come along, not because I don't want your help, but because I need to start training a new generation of Freelancers.
Thanks for opening my eyes, it's nice to feel like life has a purpose again.

Dear Freelancer,
A mutual acquaintance, Matthias Sumner, happened to mention in an otherwise very routine message about research budgets that you had actually located the final resting place of General Tarsis. I'm sure I don't have to tell you what a momentous discovery you've made! The College of Historians would be very interested in getting your account of the expedition and your impressions of the tomb on record. If you ever visit the Academy, I would be more than happy to meet with you.
Sincerely,
Mentor Wyat Aven

Dear Freelancer,
Now I've heard that you actually opened the Fortress of Dawn? When the news reached the Academy, half the College of History threw a spontaneous party in the library, and the archivists brought in lancers to move them out. Please, please contact me at your earliest convenience to have a proper record made of your expedition.
Sincerely,
Mentor Wyat Aven

Dear Freelancer,
Did you also find all the tombs of the Guardians of Dawn? Why didn't anyone tell me that sooner? And you've recovered schematics for the lost javelin of General Tarsis? And actually built something from them?
Okay, new plan. Don't worry about coming to the Academy. I'll try to get a strider to Fort Tarsis to see you. Apparently, the accuracy of the entire historical record of Bastion depends on it.

My Daughter

FROM: [NAME CENSORED]'s father.
I've asked that Corvus pass this message along to the appropriate person...
My name is [CENSORED]. My daughter is [CENSORED]. She worked for Corvus. I recently received the news that she was killed in the line of duty. The only detail I was given was that she was working undercover on an important mission involving smuggled relics. I'm told she died bravely and refused to hand over a relic to a dangerous enemy.
I'm not sure if this note will ever reach anyone. I asked Corvus to pass it along to whomever knew my daughter, or was with her on the mission. I realize there's nothing more that can be done, but I just wanted to say thank you for being there with her at the end. It helps to know she didn't die alone.
In Gratitude,
[NAME CENSORED]

I'm sending this to all Freelancers because I can't get a straight answer from anyone.
Someone has accepted delivery of several crates without my permission and placed them in the Enclave. These crates come from the ARCANIST ACADEMY, so who knows what they contain! They could be HIGHLY dangerous!!
Once I know who is responsible for this SAFETY VIOLATION, I will yell at them directly.
Strong alone. Stronger in Safety.

My Dear Freelancer,
How is the weather treating you?
Fascinating, isn't it? The power the Shapers still wield over this world. Even without a Cataclysm, everything can change in an instant. Blink, and you'll miss it.
You should keep that in mind, Freelancer. Be careful of what you might be missing.

Freelancer,
Without your push, I never would've laid Kismet to rest and, worse, I would've lost Yarrow, too. Things are better between me and the old man. We have a standing dinner once a week, and I no longer have to avoid talking about the wall. We still have debates, but they're less... heated. More academic. I wouldn't call them fun, but certainly interesting. That's family, right?
If you ever need anything, I've got your back. And who knows? Maybe we'll run a contract together.
Take care.

Freelancer,
Thank you for locating those of our order who were engaged in research in the Bastion wilderness. The teams you found had failed to check in when they were expected, and we had some family members worried that the worst had happened.
It is unfortunate that their fears were realized, but it is better to know than to be left guessing.
Again, thank you.
Sincerely,
Arcanist Rebus, on behalf of the Arcanist Academy

Just dropping a note to tell you that I'm going to head out on an expedition again. Got another letter from my mother and... well, it was the usual, but I told her straight how I felt about being an Arcanist, and I think she understands now. She hasn't accepted it, but I think she understands.
I just have to be patient.
Anyway, you take care of yourself. And as my father used to say: Don't tickle a titan you don't know.
See you around.

I had no idea teenage Arcanists were such temperamental, mouthy little shits! Was I like this? Was Matthias like this? They question everything! And some of them smell really bad!
Most days, I'd rather be smacked in the face by a stray, volatile echo. Several. Twenty.
And yet, even on the hardest days, I feel like I'm doing something real. Earning their respect, seeing those disaffected faces display true, unabashed wonder—priceless.
I regret everything, and I regret nothing. I'm blaming you, by the way.
The invitation to see me at the Academy is always open. Say hello if you're in the area.

FROM: Marelda
I know I thanked you already, but it's not often strangers help one another in this world. Loaning out a cup of sugar, perhaps. It's a rare soul who actually takes the time to listen to an old woman's story like you did. I'm sorry for the position I put you in. That must have been difficult, playing along with my hopes that you were my child. Grief is a funny thing, which I can now say, having only started to experience it after putting it off for so long. But, it's also cathartic. At least it has been for me, and that's because of the patience you showed. For a brief moment, I was able to experience a mother's love again, and that's a memory I'll cherish forever.
In the meantime, I'm living with my sister in Antium and finding all sorts of fascinating things to paint. I needed a kick in the pants to get me out of my doldrums, and you provided it.
With much love... your other "mother."
Marelda
