Witnessing the effects of the Manifold on Matthias, the Freelancer has decided to investigate further on what could have caused this conundrum and help the three Matthiases resolve the issue before it could affect other people.
At this point, each of the split Matthias personalities have chosen a name for themselves.
Hints and Suggestions
- The dialog exchange between the characters will change depending on whether single player or multiplayer mode is played.
- Remember to perform Feats to obtain XP for increasing Pilot Level and receiving Alliance bonus.
- Make sure to read the text pop ups that show up with the icon
. This can be easily done with the help of Sniper Rifles, by zooming in near the icon. - Scars in large numbers can be a nuisance. Using Combat Equipment that do Blast Damage will be beneficial during this mission.
- Use
Acid,
Armor Buster, or
Fire type damage to tackle Scar Enforcers. - Deplete enemy shields using
Shield Breaker,
Lightning or
Ice type damage. - It is also recommended that the explosives scattered across the map during combat be used when in need.
- To fight the Luminary, destroy the plates covering the joints of its four pneumatic legs. This will reveal weak points, which can be targeted to do more damage. It is preferable to use Acid or Armor Buster damage dealing combat equipment.
- In multiple playthroughs, use crafting to make tougher Combat Equipment to fight enemies.

Quest Chain
This expedition is a part of the Triple Threat Storyline. When the storyline is completed, an appropriate challenge is also completed, which will reward the Freelancer. The following are the related quests in order for this storyline:
Trivia (May Contain Spoilers)
- This mission makes use of a Hidden Place called The Well.
- It is implied a substantial amount of time has passed between the two expeditions, since Skorpions take time to nest and lay eggs. A Swarm Tyrant will have to lay those eggs.
- The shaper symbols from the previous mission are completely gone when investigating the Well.
- This mission was available during Anthem’s VIP and public demos. Much of the dialogue in the final game is different from that in the demo.
- A text popup by the scorpion eggs in their nest inside the Well reads:
- Skorpions enjoy damp, dark areas. With the ruin depowered, it has proven to be a perfect nesting spot.
- This is the only time when it is confirmed that the strider that the Freelancer uses during their side-expeditions is Haluk’s. This means that it is very likely that all the other times when a strider was used, it was Haluk’s as well, but only after Finding Old Friends is completed. This can be further explained by the fact that starting points of all previous expeditions are usually directly outside the fort walls.
- There is a text popup on the scar cages read:
- The debris on the floors of these well-worn cages suggest the Scars held more than one group of prisoners here.
- The text popup on the Arcanist equipment reads:
- These instruments detect and log spikes of Shaper energy.
- Aruna is one of the few named Arcanist NPC’s who gets a differently designed outfit or javelin outside the walls.
Below is the Script and Walkthrough for Inverse Functions (Mission):
Briefing
Investigate the Relic’s Effects on Matthias
The Freelancer must find a way to determine the root cause of Matthias’ physical multiplication and psychic division caused by the Manifold. Meanwhile, the Freelancer can speak with the trio to find out more about their situation.
Launch Expedition
The Freelancer launches an immediate expedition after the talk with the three Matthiases.
Briefing Gallery
In Expedition
The Freelancer comes out of the strider at The Bowl in their javelin, again. This time all three Matthiases: Matti, Sumner, and Erryl, along with Faye are present to assist the Freelancer.
Investigate the Relic’s Effects on Matthias
The Freelancer flies towards the Well.
Return to Ruin
- Erryl: "We are all here and able to speak to you."
- Faye: "Oh. Wonderful."
- Matti: "Isn't it? Oh, I do hope you find something fascinating back in the ruins. Shaper instruments! Never a dull moment."
- Faye: "(Groans.)"
The Freelancer flies to The Well and enters it.
- The Freelancer: "I don’t see any Dominion. Looks like they’ve left."
- Faye: "I’m not complaining. It’d be nice for things to be simple, for once."
- Sumner: "That’s not going to happen."
- Matti: "Can’t you let anyone have a moment of happiness?"
Enter Inner Chamber
The Freelancer goes inside the chamber were the Manifold once remained barriered.
- Faye: " Watch out for skorpions in the area. Must have moved in recently. Better do something about them. They'll get in the way of your investigation."
Eliminate Skorpions
There is a text pop-up among the eggs. The Freelancer defeats the nested skorpions.
- The Freelancer: "I think I got them all."
- Faye: "Wonderful. It will be much easier to continue your investigation without skorpions in your way. Looks like we've cleared out the skorpions. That'll make it easier to continue the investigation."
Locate Dominion Remains
The Freelancer looks around the places where they defeated the Dominion Trio and is shocked to witness what has happened to their corpses.
- The Freelancer: "They’ve… dissolved. No bodied, just… goo."
- Faye: "Those are not normal remains. Looks like...some kind of goo."
- Sumner: "Blood."
- The Freelancer: "Definitely not blood."
- Erryl: "Decomposition? Too quick. Unlikely. Hmm. Perhaps the Manifold?"
- Matti: "Side effect of division?"
- The Freelancer: "Right, but what do I do?"
- Erryl: "Samples would be helpful."
Samples Collected
The Freelancer collects samples from all 3 “remains” of the Dominion Trio.
- Faye: "That's...really gross."
- Matti: "Bring the samples to Aruna Kaule!"
- Erryl: "Yes. Our discussions have led to a hypothesis that the split—"
- Sumner: "It warped reality. There are side effects. Aruna Kaule specializes in that."
- Matti: "She's on expedition, helping the Sentinels."
- The Freelancer: "On it!"
Ask Aruna Kaule to Analyze Dominion Samples
The Freelancer exits the Well.
Leave Ruins
The Freelancer comes out into the Korox Shallows.
Travel to Arcanist Camp
The Freelancer flies to Aruna’s camp through The Double Cross.
- Sumner: "I don't like this."
- Matti: "You don't like anything."
- Sumner: "Dominion soldiers dissolving is bad news."
- Matti: "Relax!"
- Erryl: "We shouldn't jump to conclusions."
- Sumner: "So you're just going to sit around?"
- Matti: "Where are you going?"
- The Freelancer: "What is happening? Can this argument wait until I get back to the fort?"
- Matti: "Sumner's left! He just got up and left!"
- The Freelancer: "Left the lab?"
- Matti: "I don't know! Just find Aruna Kaule. We'll deal with this back here."
The Freelancer reaches Blackshore and a scar establishment in the Tower Road.
Defend Sentinels
Two Sentinels are fighting Scars. The Freelancer decides to help them. Once the Freelancer defeats all the Scars, they revive any downed sentinels. There is a text pop-up on one of the arcanist equipment. An Injured Sentinel speaks out.
- Injured Sentinel: "Never thought I'd be thanking a Freelancer."
- The Freelancer: "Where's Aruna Kaule?"
- Injured Sentinel: "The Scars took her. They took most of the Arcanists. I'll show you—(Gasps)."
- The Freelancer: "You're hurt. Stay here. I'll handle it."
- Injured Sentinel: "Be careful. There's an Escari leading them. Huge. Dangerous. It's making trouble."
Travel to Scar Hideout
The Freelancer flies to The Tower Road.
- Faye: "A makeshift prison camp?"
- The Freelancer: "I see the Arcanists!"
Defeat Scar
The Freelancer fights more Scar enemies gating into the makeshift prison. One of the cages has a text pop-up.
Rescue Aruna
The Freelancer opens up the cages of all Arcanists, Aruna’s is the final one.
- Aruna Kaule: "Thank you! I wasn't looking forward for whatever that Escari had planned for us."
- The Freelancer: "Aruna Kaule?"
- Aruna Kaule: "Yeah? That's me. How did—"
- The Freelancer: "Matthias Sumner sent me. He needs you to—"
- Aruna Kaule: "Oh, that jerk."
- The Freelancer: "Um...to analyze this."
- Aruna Kaule: "Where did you get this? The energies it's giving off..."
- Aruna Kaule: "I can evaluate the data back at the fort."
- Haluk: "I'll take Aruna and the rest of the prisoners in the strider. You should take out that Escari she mentioned. Kidnapping? Sounds like bad news."
- Faye: "Found the Escari we're looking for. We'll have to take it down!"
Stop the Kidnapper Escari before it Does More Harm
The Kidnapper Escari is in Blackshore.
Eliminate Escari
- The Freelancer: "Do we know what this Escari looks like?"
- Faye: "The Sentinel said it was huge and dangerous."
The Freelancer flies back to Blackshore to find the Escari in the Sentinel camp, which is now abandoned. The Freelancer fights the Kidnapper Escari inside a tank and defeats it, even when it summons additional Scar enemies.
- The Freelancer: "That should take care of it!"
- Faye: "Good Work. Head back to the fort and we’ll see if Aruna discovered anything about those samples."
The Freelancer returns to the fort.
Post Expedition
The Freelancer come out of their javelin.
Find out What Aruna has Learned from the Dominion Sample
The Freelancer finds Aruna in an alleyway near the Fort Tarsis Prison amid Fort Tarsis Apartments.
Speak with Aruna
- Aruna Kaule: "Good. You're here. These samples you brought me...what were they?"
- The Freelancer: "Well, they used to be Dominion."
- Aruna Kaule: "I thought it might be something like that. Reality decay's not pretty."
- The Freelancer: "Reality...decay?"
- Aruna Kaule: "When a Shaper instrument taps into the Anthem, it affects reality. And reality is a lot less stable than you think it is. One incorrect variable and the entire equation collapses. Reality collapses. These Dominion. Whatever happened to them altered their nature - the fundamentals of their existence. But it wasn't right. Something wasn't right. They couldn't last."
Aruna suddenly wonders why this conversation is happening at all, and even with a Freelancer of all people.
- Aruna Kaule: "What's this got to do with Matthias?"
- The Freelancer: "Whatever happened to these Dominion happened to Matthias too."
- Aruna Kaule: "You're not saying..."
- The Freelancer: "The Manifold affected him. It means he—they—are unstable, and in real danger."
- The Freelancer: "I gotta go."
The Freelancer then goes to meet Matti and Erryl in their lab.
Notes and Remarks
- Ideally, to not break immersion, the next mission must be done immediately. However, it is not strictly required.
- The dialogs in this expedition will always remain the same as mentioned in this script. However, certain conversations may be skipped if actions are performed quickly, or additional conversations will show up if there is a delay.
Note: The Expedition Maps feature is still a Work in Progress. Sometimes, a refreshing/reloading of this page may be required to zoom-in or zoom-out completely.
