Incursion (Mission)

Tassyn thinks that since the Scars are in distress, there is so unusual Dominion activity going on within Northern Bastion. Meanwhile, an agent of Tassyn’s who had infiltrated a Regulator camp hasn’t been sending messages for a while.

The Freelancer is contracted to find this agent after their success in rescuing Matthias Sumner from Scars.

Outcome
You pursued the Monitor into the jungle, only to be ambushed by his troops. He got away, but not all is lost—you managed to recover the intel from Tassyn's agent. With any luck, it will reveal further clues about the Dominion's plans and the threat they pose to Fort Tarsis.

• Tassyn: "I have another job for you. "
  
• Freelancer: "I’m flattered, but I still don’t really know you."
  
• Tassyn: "Old habit. I work for Corvus."
  
• Freelancer: "Ah. A spy."
  
• Tassyn: "My job is to keep tabs on threats to Fort Tarsis. I have an agent embedded with the Regulators, a group of smugglers. She keeps the really dangerous stuff from the wrong buyers. But her last report said that there had been an incursion of foreign operatives in the area."
  
• Freelancer: "Who are they?"
  
• Tassyn: "Like I said before, I’m betting Dominion. Which means trouble’s coming our way."
  
• Freelancer: "Big trouble if you’re right."
  
• Tassyn: "I think trouble’s your idea of fun. Start by meeting my agent at the regulator camp, here. Learn what else she knows and go from there."
  
• Freelancer: "We’ll get it done."

In Mission

The Freelancer waits outside the Fort gates waiting for instructions from Owen

Rendezvous Tassyn’s Agent

• Owen: "I’ve got the map coordinates from Tassyn. You’re headed for a regulator camp."
  
• Freelancer: "Her agent will be there?"
  
• Owen: "Undercover. Tassyn gave me a picture so we can identify her."
  

Travel to Regulator Camp

The Freelancer flies to the coordinates given by Tassyn

• Freelancer: "So what’s the latest intel these days on the Regulators."
  
• Owen: "Still the same smugglers they’ve been. Anything is of value is fair game. Plus the usual rumors of secret hideouts in the area. They have to keep all that stuff somewhere."
  
• Freelancer: "Question is, why would the Dominion be involved?"
  
• Owen: "I hope Tassyn’s wrong about that. Not looking forward to being a wartime Cypher."
  

When the Freelancer is near the Palisades of Idris district

• Owen: "Okay, you’re not far from the regulator camp. Should be coming up soon. And keep an eye out, we’re skirting the edge of Scar territory."
  

As the Freelancer reaches the camp, a bunch of Wyverns are flying around

• Freelancer: "We’ve got trouble. The camp’s been overrun. I’m clearing them out."
  

Defeat Wyverns

The Freelancer fights the fire breathing Wyverns and defeats them

• Freelancer: "Looks like we’ve got dead Regulators here. Owen, can you identify Tassyn’s agent?"
  
• Owen: "Uhhh… not seeing her. Could still be alive."
  
• Freelancer: "Well, animals didn’t kill these people. They were already dead."
  
• Owen: "Is there anything useful at the site?"
  

Search for Clue

The Freelancer looks around the empty Regulator camp filled with dead bodies. They fly around searching for anything which may hint at Tassyn’s Agent signs. They find a recording device and interact with it.

• Owen: "There’s some kind of recording there"

The recording when played was distorted

• Regulator: "…Dominion have attacked the camp! I can’t reach Tassyn. They’re looking for the Regulator hideout at these coordinates…"
  
• Freelancer: "That was Tassyn’s agent."
  
• Owen: "I’ll need to decrypt the coordinates and… hang on, Scars on top of you!"
  

Defeat Scar Ambush

The Freelancer is ambushed by scars entering the camp using hives. During combat

• Freelancer: "They’re never gonna leave us alone, are they?"
  
• Owen: "They’ve been out for blood since we rescued Matthias. You know, Tassyn’s right. Has to be the Dominion stirring the pot."
  

After the Freelancer defeats all the Scars

• Freelancer: "Owen, do you have those coordinates?"
  
• Owen: "Yup, got it. It’s not far."
  
• Freelancer: "Then I’m going to the hideout now. Can’t wait."
  

Travel to Regulator Hideout

• Owen: "You sure about this? Taking on the Dominion isn’t like fighting a pack of wolven."
  
• Freelancer: "When evil people knock on your door, you don’t hide. You kick their ass back to whatever hole they crawled out of."
  
• Owen: "Stop the fire before it spreads?"
  
• Freelancer: "Fort Trasis cannot become another Freemark."
  

The Freelancer flies to the coordinates to The Shrine. When the Freelancer is outside the hideout, there are several wolven in their way

• Owen: "This must be the Regulator hideout."
  
• Freelancer: "With more dead Regulators."
  
• Owen: "The Dominion aren’t known for taking prisonners."
  

The Freelancer defeats the wolven before entering the hideout. Inside the hideout

Explore the Regulator Hideout

The damp cave has several equipment laid out by its Regulator inahibitants

• Owen: "A smugler’s cave, it would seem."
  
• Freelancer: "Anything you could want for a price."
  
• Owen: "Looks like that includes Shaper relics."
  

Further into the cave, is a closed door. When the Freelancer reaches the door

• Freelancer: "Owen—flight controls are down. What’s happening?"
  
• Owen: "Yeah, I’m seeing that. You’re in some kind of a field. Has to be affecting your suit."
  

The Freelancer opens the door and walks through it. A large machine is spinning whilst emanating faint energy

• Owen: "There’s the problem—that machine. That’s a [{Dominion Technology"
  
• Freelancer: "Could explain how they ambushed the Regulators. Can you disable it?"
  
• Owen: "I’ve never dealt with one before. It would take time to override. Best to press on."
  

If the Freelancer tries to interact with the shield generator’s console

• Freelancer: "Maybe this will turn it off?"
  
• Owen: "Not at the moment. But it gives me something to work with. Best get moving."
  

The Freelancer has to continue on foot to go further. There are several mines laid out in the area. If the Freelancer encounters a mine

• Owen: "Careful, they mined the place! That could ruin you rday."
  
• Freelancer: "Right…"
  

Further inside the cave, the reach of the shield generator is minimized

• Freelancer: "Flight control’s back. I’m pushing on."
  
• Owen: "The Dominion can’t be here by accident. These smugglers are hiding relics."
  
• Freelancer: "I know. I’m trying not to jump to conclusions."
  
• Owen: "Oh, I will. Take a flying leap. Because the wrong Shaper relic in the wrong hands…"
  
• Freelancer: "Means this won’t be a boring day."
  

The Freelancer finds another locked door further in, behind a waterfall. The open and enter to look around. There are Dominion troops. One of them is holding something. The Freelancer, being cautious, takes cover behind a boulder

• Owen: "And there we are… the Dominion. Yeah and they’ve got Tassyn’s agent. Best lie low."
  

A Dominion soldier is taking a captive Regulator—whom Owen has confirmed as the missing agent—to a Dominion Leader. The soldier throw the agent. Another soldier grabs her and inquires

• Dominion Shocktrooper: "Give us the relic! We know it’s here."
  
• Regulator: "I… I… don’t know what you mean! "
  
• Dominion Shocktrooper: "Then I’ll show you—"
  

As the Shocktrooper raises his weapon to hit the agent, he is stopped by someone in a strange javelin.

• Dominion Leader: "No. That’s not how we conduct business. I find that pain is no substitute for money. "
  

The Dominion leader walks towards the agent and crouches near her. He then speaks with the agent

• Dominion Leader: "So, let’s negotiate. "
  
• Regulator: "The relic’s… not… for sale."
  
• Dominion Leader: "Heh. See? Progress. You do have it. Now name your price and all walk away with something."
  
• Regulator: "Relics… are dangerous."
  
• Dominion Leader: "Only if you’re careless. Do I look careless?"
  

Another Dominion soldier shows up

• Dominion Soldier: "Monitor! We found the relic!"
  

The Dominion leader stands up as the soldier comes running with the relic in his hand. The leader examines the relic for a brief moment

• The Monitor: "A pity for you. Negotiations have concluded."
  

The Monitor takes his gaze away from the relic in his hand, and without turning towards the agent on the ground, shoots a blast of purple energy at her

• The Freelancer: "You bastard!"
  

As the Monitor walks away, the Freelancer come out of hiding and fires at the Monitor using a weapon. None of the bullets reach the Monitor because of his shields

• Owen: "Oh. Well, now this is awkward."
  

The Monitor looks at the Freelancer and plays around with the relic and speaks nonchalantly, almost sardonically

• The Monitor: "A Freelancer? How useless. I fought your kind before. And I put them in the ground… you’ll be joining them"
  

The Monitor walks away

• Owen: "And now we get down to business."
  

Survive the Enemy Attack

Defeat Dominion Troops

The Freelancer fights hordes of Dominion enemies

• Owen: "Can’t believe this. Are we really in a firefight with Dominion?"
  
• Freelancer: "I am. You’re sitting in a chair somewhere!"
  
• Owen: "Not used to having professional soldiers shoot at us! Scars maybe, but not like this!"
  
• Freelancer: "Bullets work on both of them."
  
• Owen: "I didn’t say it wasn’t exciting! Just… be careful."
  

After all the enemies are defeated

• Freelancer: "Clear!"
  

Recover Intel from Tassyn’s Agent

Investigate the Agent

• Owen: "You did it. But what about Tassyn’s agent? She still alive?"
  

The Freelancer goes to check on the agent and interacts with her to see if she is still alive

• Freelancer: "She didn’t make it. But there’s an archive here."
  
• Owen: "I see it. Looks damaged from the fight."
  
• Freelancer: "Maybe Tassyn can make sense of it. This can’t be for nothing."
  
• Owen: "What about the one they call “the Monitor”? he took the relic."
  
• Freelancer: "Then I’m getting it back."
  

Leave Hideout

The Freelancer flies back towards the chamber with the shield generator

• Owen: "These are classic Dominion tactics. Total carnage and no witnesses."
  
• Freelancer: "What are they doing this far south?"
  
• Owen: "I don’t know, but it involves relics. That won’t end well."
  

When the Freelancer reaches the chamber with the shield generator

• Freelancer: "My javelin’s grounded again."
  
• Owen: "It’s that shield generator! That’s trouble. Push them back. Watch it! Looks like the Monitor left a clean up crew behind."
  

Deactivating

The Freelancer must remain within the range marked by the green circle cypher projection to deactivate the shield generator, while combating Dominion troops

Defeat Dominion Troops

• Owen: "Try to disable that machine. I have the specs. I think I can override it."
  

If the Freelancer goes outside the range

• Owen: "Hold there—I’ll try to deactivate it!"
  

When the Freelancer gets back in the circle

• Owen: "That’s it we’re back in range"
  
• Freelancer: "Great place to die, Owen!"
  
• Owen: "Have I ever let you down?"
  

Once the shield generator is deactivated

• Owen: "(Laughs.) It’s off! You can fly again!"
  

The Freelancer can now fly around while in combat

Defeat Dominion Lieutenant

Additional Dominion troops gate in

• Owen: "More Dominion coming at you! Pretty serious-looking, too! Watch yourself!"
  

The Freelancer encounters a Dominion Valkyrie, who is the Monitor’s lieutenant

• Dominion Valkyrie: "Freelancer, you can die a meaningless death, or surrender to us now. We’ll spare you the agony."
  
• Freelancer: "Agony is going to be this bullet up your ass!"
  
• Dominion Valkyrie: "Tear them apart."
  
• Freelancer: "Look who has a temper!"
  

The Freelancer defeats the lieutenant and the remaining Dominion troops

• Owen: "That’s the last of them."
  
• Freelancer: "I can still catch the Monitor"
  
• Owen: "Better hurry. He’s got a head start."
  

Leave Hideout

The Freelancer flies outside the Shrine and tries to locate the Monitor. Owen creates cypher projections to help the Freelancer navigate and get a better signal from the trail left behind by the Monitor

Track Monitor’s Signal

• Freelancer: "I’m outside."
  
• Owen: "I’ve got a signal we can track. Can’t hide from this cypher."
  

Follow Monitor’s Signal

The Freelancer flies through the cypher projection rings. When a few rings are traversed through

• Owen: "There you go. He can’t be too far. Dominion must have big plans if a guy like the Monitor’s in our neighborhood."
  
• Freelancer: "We just need to make sure he never comes back."
  
• Owen: "Y’see, this is why I want to be out there with you. Show bad people the door."
  
• Freelancer: "Not as easy as it looks."
  
• Owen: "Okay, show bad people the door at the end of a very large gun."
  

While the Freelancer goes through more cypher projections

• Owen: "Still got a trial. Keep it up and we might have a shot at this."
  
• Freelancer: "That’s all we need."
  

When the Freelancer reaches near The Pistons district

• Owen: "Okay, you’re coming up on him. Just ahead."
  

Locate the Monitor and Stop Him

Defeat Dominion Troops

There are several Dominion enemies and Turrets targeting the Freelancer

• Freelancer: "I see a lot of Dominion! Where’s the Monitor?"
  
• Owen: "Checking. They’ve got turrets of some sort. Those’ll ruin your day. Probably want to take them out!"
  

After the Freelancer destroys the turrets

• Owen: "Is it just me, or does it look like the Dominion are staying a while?"
  
• Freelancer: "I don’t know what they’re up to, but it’s not happening in our neck of the woods."
  
• Owen: "I suppose they’d listen to reason? Talk it out?"
  
• Freelancer: "Does this look like they dropped by for tea?"
  

After defeating several Dominion enemies

• Owen: "I’m not seeing him. Getting a bad feeling here. I think…"
  
• Freelancer: "…maybe this was an ambush. They led us here!"
  
• Owen: "Damn. Time to show them that really large gun."
  

After many more enemies are defeated

• Owen: "Watch it! Another one of the Monitor’s lieutenants!"
  

Defeat Dominion Lieutenant

The Freelancer continues with the combat as a Dominion Valkyrie shows up

• Dominion Valkyrie: "Freelancer. The Monitor has ordered your elimination."
  
• Freelancer: "We all want things we can’t have."
  
• Dominion Valkyrie: "I never disappoint him."
  
• Freelancer: "Yeah? Was that your friend back in the cave? You twins or something?"
  
• Dominion Valkyrie: "We do not fail our orders."
  
• Freelancer: "Well, she had orders to kill me too. Guess who was disappointed?"
  
• Dominion Valkyrie: "Crush them!"
  
• Freelancer: "Come and try!"
  

The Freelancer finally defeats all the Dominion enemies and the Monitor’s lieutenant

• Owen: "Score one for the Freelancers."
  

The Freelancer’s hud begins to distort and glitch. Owen’s voice cannot be clearly. The cypher signal is jammed.

• The Monitor: "Yes. Congratulations on walking straight into my trap."
  
• Freelancer: "Owen? Owen, what’s happening?"
  
• Owen: "I don’t know. He’s—"
  
• The Monitor: "Obviously more powerful than you. I think it’s important to take a measure of one’s adversary. And I find you… lacking."
  
• Freelancer: "Yeah? Ask your lieutenants how they feel? Oh right, you can’t. Because I put them down."
  
• The Monitor: "Freelancers boast of courage they never have. It’s why they’re extinct."
  
• Freelancer: "I’m alive and well, you son of a—"
  
• Owen: "He’s gone. Save your breath. You best head back to the fort. I’ll let Tassyn know we need to talk."
  

The Freelancer heads back to the Fort Tarsis Launch Bay

Post Mission

The Freelancer heads out of the Launch Bay to go to the Enclave, where Tassyn is with Owen

• Tassyn: "Owen filled me in on what happened."
  
• Freelancer: "You’ve got a problem out there. Some kind of Dominion heavy."
  
• Owen: "His people called him the Monitor. We couldn’t stop him."
  
• Tassyn: "And he was there for a Shaper relic?"
  
• Freelancer: "Tore the place apart. Your agent wouldn’t give in. right to the end, she… well…"
  
• Tassyn: "I know"
  
• Freelancer: "I’m sorry. She left this archive behind."
  
• Tassyn: "I’ll have my people dig into it. The Dominion really have returned."
  
• Freelancer: "In force."
  
• Tassyn: "Damn."
  
• Freelancer: "I thought spies took everything in stride?"
  
• Tassyn: "We also respect out enemies. Life under Dominion rule… isn’t much a life at all. And if they’ve set their sights on Fort Tarsis…"
  
• Owen: "Right. The Fort isn’t exactly my idea of living the dream, but it is home. And I’d prefer it remain dictator-free. What can we do?"
  
• Tassyn: "For now, remain patient. I don’t’ want to make a move until I have more information. In the meantime, there’s someone I’d like you to meet…"
  

A woman arrives to join the conversation

• Tassyn: "Sentinel Brin. She’s sharp, trustworthy, and could use some assistance. Why don’t you help herwhile I look into the Dominion? I’ll be in touch. "
  

As Tassyn exits, the Sentinel introduces herself. For some reason, she seems uncomfortable while speaking

• Sentinel Brin: "Sentinel Ryssa Brin, Fort Command."
  
• Freelancer: "Sentinel. How can we help?"
  
• Sentinel Brin: "Well… we probably shouldn’t talk here. Come see me by my desk an dmy plants."
  
• Owen: "Plants?"
  
• Sentinel Brin: "Right. So, uh… good. I will see you."
  

Brin takes her leave

• Freelancer: "Okay, then."
  

Matthias speaks through the comms link

• Matthias: "Freelancer! How’s it going? It’s Matthias Sumner, checking in! by the way, I finally cleared out the clutter from my lab, so I can resume my work. I’ll be there if you need to talk."
  

Trivia (May Contain Spoilers)

• This is the first time Tassyn reveals that she works for Corvus and she is in charge of For Tarsis’ issues.
• There are several abandoned javelins inside the dead regulator camp, but not a single corpse.
• Standing in the burning fire inside the camp will put the Freelancer’s javelin under the fire status.
• Outside The Shrine, when the Freelancer says more dead Regulators, there is exactly one abandoned colossus javelin, which is difficult to find, unless standing very close to the entrance, near the equipment.
• The text popup about the shield generator indicates that it can not only generate shields, but also disables flight.
• The Monitor saying that he has fought other Freelancers is a reference to the destruction of Freemark.
• Although Tassyn’s agent’s real name is not revealed in the text popup near her corpse, a letter is received from her parent thanking the Freelancer after the mission is completed.
• The mines seen before the cutscene can automatically detonate when the Freelancer touches them. However, after Owen disables the shield generator, the mines deactivate. So they can only explode if they are detonated using a combat ability.
• This is the first time Dominion shocktrooper, Valkyries, storm brutes, frost bruits, frost hounds, and Gauss turrets are encountered.
• Both the Dominion Valkyries who show up are elite enemies. They are also named a s Dominion Lieutenants. In the subtitles, however, they are simply called Dominion Valkyries.
• At the end of the Mission, the game forcibly puts the player into Launch Bay without giving other options.
