Striders (2)
See Cortex Entry: Striders (2) for More Details
With their tough hide and sturdy joints, striders can walk past the stars. Blast those criminals that knock my ugly beauties down for the promise of a few ratty coins.
On the line, the steps needed to bring a strider to life are beyond belief to those who have never seen it. Takes the sweat of many to ensure this world gets a little smaller and a little safer. What's more important than that?

Freelancer Enclave: Xagular Skull
See Cortex Entry: Freelancer Enclave: Xagular Skull for More Details
Xagular are medium-sized predatory animals native to the mountains near Heliost. They are often depicted in art of the Legion era as companions of the urgoth. The skulls of xagular are considered good luck, bringing health and happiness to all who touch them.
This specimen was recovered by Lucky Jak, who was attacked by the creature while protecting Arcanist researchers at a Shaper relic site.
Owen Corley (1)
See Cortex Entry: Owen Corley (1) for More Details
Owen is a cypher who works out of the Freelancer enclave in Fort Tarsis, a small town on the frontier in Bastion. Born into poverty, he was sent for cypher training at a young age when he first showed sensitivity to the Anthem. Owen spent most of his life studying at Bronelyn Satomi in Heliost.
Owen is an adventurer and mischief-maker at heart. After leaving Bronelyn, he traveled for a number of years before settling down in Fort Tarsis to work with the Freelancers. However, the few contracts available have left him uninspired and dreaming of grander things. He longs to operate a javelin of his own.

You first met Owen a little over ten years ago in the tiny city of Ponteix when he tried to steal from you. Despite this introduction, you had an unmistakable connection and spent the rest of your week having fun together.
Years later, after the failed mission into the Heart of Rage and rift with your team, your roaming and soul-searching took you to Heliost, where you bumped into Owen again. Since then, you've turned that brief friendship of the past into a solid partnership.

Engineers (1)
See Cortex Entry: Engineers (1) for More Details
Skilled mechanics, artisans, architects, and smiths who build, maintain, and repair Bastion's infrastructure. They are based out of Heliost, where they process natural resources, including mineral and ember deposits. Engineers follow the path built by Arden Vassa, creator of the first javelin and designer of most post-Legion architecture. There are two main groups within the Engineers—architects who design blueprints for manufacturing, and mechanics who use those blueprints to build items with the Forge.
Northern Bastion
See Cortex Entry: Northern Bastion for More Details
Nestled between the Sundric Sea and the mountains, Northern Bastion has a plethora of Shaper constructs and historical Legion of Dawn architecture, including the Fortress of Dawn. The population of this area has depleted greatly since the tragic destruction of Freemark and the subsequent mass exodus of the Arcanist settlement of Shadowmark. Fort Tarsis, the halfway point between Antium and the cities of Freemark and Heliost respectively, is the only settlement that remains in this area.
New Plan, People:
See Cortex Entry: New Plan, People: for More Details
With the cold coming, a lot more traffic will be heading to and from Heliost. Most bands would take this opportunity to hit as many striders as possible, but most outlaws, as you know, are idiots.
We will ignore the strider tracks and go straight for the loading docks. With so many new people coming and going from the city, no one will even notice us. We walk in the front gate, unload cargo straight into our own strider, and leave with no one the wiser.
I want everyone cleaned up and looking respectable. We start when the frost hits.

Listen up, people:
We can't stop grifting Icetide crap, fine. That time of year, I guess. Rather than fight the season, we're gonna run with it. If we're going to steal Icetide stuff anyway, we might as well get all of it. Every. Last. Bit.
Everybody grab an Icetide sweater. We're going back to Heliost.

So, the third trip into Heliost was a resounding success. The ugly sweaters were a surprisingly good disguise. We got a shipment of greeting cards, a couple-dozen crates of baked snacks from Antium, a crate of imported cheese, a whole lot of moonshine (we're keeping close tabs on that, so don't even think about it) and a bunch of kids' toys. Yes, you can help yourself to those.
Special thanks to the guys who stayed up all night painting the damned strider yet again. You'll be getting the first of the moonshine.

Success!
See Cortex Entry: Success! for More Details
That last heist cleaned Heliost completely out of seasonal holiday stuff. Everyone's done a great job. Special thanks to Chaingun Morro for actually sneaking into the Sentinel barracks to steal their Icetide ornaments. That was a thing of beauty. The boss is so happy, we're not only passing around the moonshine, we're breaking open that crate of baked snacks.
Everyone keep their distance from the boss, though. He's not in a shooting mood, but he's way too happy. Like, giddy? It's creeping people out, and I'm not dealing with any more crying outlaws.
Icetide Celebrations?

Ember
See Cortex Entry: Ember for More Details
A naturally occurring, dangerous by-product of the Anthem, used as a foundation for human technology. While active ember can be found throughout Bastion, it is most bountiful around the Engineer city of Heliost. Legend has it that the urgoth enslaved humanity because the urgoth could not manipulate ember, whereas humans could. Ember is necessary to create the gateway between the human mind and the Anthem and, while excessive exposure to ember can be dangerous, it is often applied to cyphers during their training. If you should find ember in the wild, it can be harvested to craft remarkable weapons and gear.
Mail: Request for Parchment
See Cortex Entry: Mail: Request for Parchment for More Details
To Commander Vule,
On behalf of the citizens of Fort Tarsis, I am petitioning for an increase in parchment stores to be delivered on a regular cadence. The rate in which this Fort's population consumes parchment so that it can produce letters, contracts, and entertainment is more than our current stocks can bear. I know that you have issued a request for citizens to reduce how much parchment they use, but I would argue that this is a mistake. We do not have the luxuries and distractions of Antium or Heliost. For many of us, parchment is our only outlet. It is how we connect and stay sane. Without it, I am positive you will see an increase in undesirable activity. That is not a threat, mind you, just a prediction.
Thank you for your consideration.

FreeCHANCEr, Just got to Antium and checked in with the crew. I thought I would have delayed them but NO, they are waiting for some delivery from Heliost. More waiting. I miss Orion. Knew I would. But I think it's more I miss someone to worry about. I guess I'll have to find someone else to worry about. How are things in Fort Tarsis? My crew wants to know if you've ever seen a statue of that urgoth, "Malnox." You know, the one from the myths? The one where Arden Vassa threw mud on his statue to piss him off? I'd like to see that. There's lots I'd like to see. Hmm.
P.S.: You know what I'm going to say. Don't make me come up there and save your ass.

I found him in a well-appointed facility near a farming community on the outskirts of Heliost. He'd left academia and its narrow world behind. His rough study was more clutter and collections than sterile lab. To him, it was clear that ideas and action outstripped endless hesitation. Govran himself was a small man with wide and delighted eyes. He took my hand in a firm handshake and spent the day with endless questions about my own work. So taxing was the talk, I felt less examined in my final defense at the academy. Despite the rigor, I quickly felt a kinship with this warm and inviting scholar. I began my real education of our unsettling world. How very thin are the walls that separate us from chaos.
Divine Vengeance (Weapon)
See Cortex Entry: Divine Vengeance (Weapon) for More Details
This assault rifle gained its name in one of the early skirmishes with the Dominion. A lone survivor from an ambush on a strider convoy stumbled upon the Dominion raiders while making her way back to Heliost. She used darkness, the hills, and focused vengeance to her advantage. She used her last shot to kill the final three Dominion troopers.
Endless Siege (Weapon)
See Cortex Entry: Endless Siege (Weapon) for More Details
This autocannon increases your suit's cooling capabilities when the action heats up. It was indispensable during the first Scar attack on Heliost. It was described as a scorching hot afternoon when the insects first scuttled up the slopes. But this gun's ability to keep its mortars firing allowed the defending Sentinels to steadily punish the attackers. If not for Endless Siege, the Scars would have almost certainly overrun Heliost.
Insult and Injury (Weapon)
See Cortex Entry: Insult and Injury (Weapon) for More Details
It was a supply mission to Heliost and a vicious group of outlaws had the path blocked. Four Freelancers were sent out and discovered the outlaws had built a blockade that stopped striders cold. But the outlaws didn't account for grenades that could be bounced into position and then ignited. When the defeated outlaws tried to escape, they ran into a herd of korox that had been frightened by the noise. There was one outlaw who survived. He never told a soul what happened that day—but the Freelancers did.
Avenging Herald (Weapon)
See Cortex Entry: Avenging Herald (Weapon) for More Details
This heavy pistol, that gains power while hovering, was inspired by tragedy. A strider went down on the path from Heliost to Antium. Nobody knows how or why it went down, but they do know the survivors were run down and torn apart by wolven. A Freelancer who lost his family in the incident dedicated his life to hunting down wolven. He would track down a pack and then hover over them, shooting until they were all dead. A wolven-hating Arcanist created this pistol to help the Freelancer with his terrible vengeance.
Skystone Lock
See Cortex Entry: Skystone Lock for More Details
Built in 207 L.V., this strider port was built specifically to keep skorpions from migrating over the mountains into Heliost. Though the inscription reads, “May our paths go ever on together in peace,” the Skystone Lock has seen its share of violence and, in 392, outlaws captured the lock for a hijacking during the busy trading days of the great expansion. Scars captured the Lock again in 464; they hold the Fort Tarsis side of the lock, while the path to Heliost on the other side is guarded by Sentinels.
Blackshore (District)
See Cortex Entry: Blackshore (District) for More Details
The Freelancer failure at the Heart of Rage has had one other unfortunate result. With Freelancer numbers much reduced, the Scar population flourishes again, spreading to nearby Lakeshore, occupying the mine and destroying the water system in the area. Scar scouts are once again an everyday occurrence, making travel more dangerous than ever. Between this and the occupation at the gate to Heliost, I can't help but feel that the Scars are winning.

It is absolutely vital that the Southern Reach remain in our control. With Freemark gone, and the gate to Heliost overrun by Scars, the road to Antium is our only source of food and supplies.

Skystone Overlook

Scars have taken Skystone. Took down some nasties with flamethrowers, but then they retreated into the lock itself. Sentinels down. Not enough of us left. Must get back to the fort so the Chronicler can tell Heliost to be on guard. We cannot let the Scars get past the lock.

The "Relics of Heliost" puzzle was invented over two hundred years ago by a group of bored engineers in Heliost, who built it over one long month as a storm raged outside the city walls. This original puzzle was inadvertently built using pegs that turned out to be Shaper pieces. The mistake was only discovered when the chief engineer was struck blind.
Weapons Delivery

Commander Vule:
Please accept my apologies in the late delivery of these capacitors and thruster augments for your Sentinels. The Scar incursion has caused difficulties in getting necessary supplies, and we have been facing a backlog. I'm sure you understand. Please don't hesitate to contact me via Chronicler if you need to speak further.

Similar architecture can be discovered across Bastion. Yet only here do we see it mixed with modern machinery, as though some Heliost engineers started making suggestions and adding chains and winches.
