CRAFTING THE SHIELD

See Cortex Entry: CRAFTING THE SHIELD for More Details

Defeated, the Freelancer returned to Haluk and Faye. But Faye had not lost hope. She believed that the Javelin of Dawn required the General's own signet to truly work. The Dominion would not make it to the Cenotaph as easily as they believed. Meanwhile, Faye hoped to construct a version of the Dawn Shield on their own, using what she had learned in the fortress and Haluk's ingenuity. But this would require the Freelancer to search far and wide for resources, risking life and limb.

EARLY WARNINGS

See Cortex Entry: EARLY WARNINGS for More Details

For two years, the nightmare of that day in the Heart of Rage (Cataclysm) lingered. The Freelancer parted ways with Haluk and Faye, who were unable to reconcile the tragedy. The two were haunted by the disaster and were driven by their need to solve the mystery of the Anthem. But the Freelancer chose a different path. They looked for a fresh start in Bastion. Work was scarce, though the Freelancer happily accepted any available job along with a new cypher, Owen Corley. Together, they thwarted disaster when a Shaper relic spiraled out of control and threatened to spawn a new breed of monstrosity to wreak havoc on the land.

FINDING OLD FRIENDS

See Cortex Entry: FINDING OLD FRIENDS for More Details

The tides of history so often turn on the shifting fortunes and allegiances of the people who love each other, hate each other, or something in between. It was almost poetic then, that in the bid to stop the Dominion, the Freelancer found themselves in the court of Princess Zhim while seeking the help of their old companions, Haluk and Faye. Two years hadn't healed the rift between them, but the present danger forced an uneasy reunion. The former commander and his cypher hadn't been sitting idle all this time—they were tirelessly seeking answers to the Heart of Rage, which could prove invaluable in stopping the Dominion.

FREELANCER DOWN

See Cortex Entry: FREELANCER DOWN for More Details

History is rarely kind to old warriors. Even as their immortal legend grows with feats of heroism, their body and mind begin to falter. Haluk, once a Freelancer of exceptional renown, came face-to-face with his own mortality in the Fortress of Dawn. Worse, it was at the hands of the traitor, Owen. But when faced with an unexpected Dominion attack, Haluk rallied and helped lead the charge to ensure he and the Freelancer escaped to safety. Their good fortune continued when Owen, in an unexpected fit of conscience, provided them the missing piece to finish their javelin.

Faye Navine (1)

See Cortex Entry: Faye Navine (1) for More Details

A talented cypher from Antium, Faye was bored with her sheltered life in the capital before she accepted a position with the Arcanists along the Bastion frontier. While there, she met the Freelancer Haluk, who promised her a firsthand look at the mysterious and wondrous things in the wilderness. Faye quit her Arcanist posting and joined the Freelancers.

Haluk (1)

See Cortex Entry: Haluk (1) for More Details

Haluk was the Freelancer's mentor and a leader during the attempt to silence the Heart of Rage years ago. He and the Freelancer then parted on bad terms. Originally from the Mirelands, Haluk was a high-spirited leader among the Freelancers, though the failure at the Heart of Rage made him grumpy, argumentative, and jaded.

Haluk (2)

For the tenth time: no comment! You hear me? I don’t want to talk about it, okay? You want details on what it was like watching Adair get torn apart? That what you want? Not happening. They’re dead. All dead. So leave me the hell alone! I’m done here!

Faye, I swear I didn’t leave the toilet seat up. Honest. The strider’ll hit a bump and the seat just kinda pops open. Wasn’t me.

My limp? Easy. I had a disagreement with an ursix.

How’d I get my limp? Took a tumble off a cliff fighting a wyvern.

INTO THE HEART OF RAGE

See Cortex Entry: INTO THE HEART OF RAGE for More Details

The tale of the Freelancer began in disaster. An endeavor launched to tame the Heart of Rage with the courage of so many souls quickly turned to a nightmare of ash, flames, and death. Haluk led the charge, with the Freelancer following behind. Cypher Faye guided them all with a watchful eye. But victory was denied. The staggering power of the Anthem of Creation was unleashed in the form of a titan, dooming the warriors to certain death. Haluk remained defiant to the end. The Freelancer was forced to drag their leader away, a broken man unwilling to accept defeat and devastated over the loss of his warriors.

I never drink, and maybe this is a bad idea, but I think I should send you a letter while I'm feeling... honest. I'm a little cranky about your old team coming back into the picture. Especially Faye. Sure, I'm feeling a bit replaced, but I'm trying hard to understand.

Look, that was a big deal when you went into the Heart of Rage. I wasn't there, but you shared how intense that was. I told you my feelings about my father dropping me off at the Satomi. I haven't told many about that. I feel like we have a good... sharing thing, which is good. And... I've tried to talk to Haluk and Faye about that mission, but they shut me down.

Bah, I'm taking it too personally. Too many feelings, probably? I tend to do that. Even when I was little, my mother used to say, "Owen, go to your room to cry. Come back when you're happy."

I'll be fine! Looking forward to playing my part. We're going to do awesome. I'm feeling better now just writing it all down. In fact, I may not even send this.

Owen

Hello Friend.

Surprise. I'm not much for letter writing but I thought you might want to hear about the new cause, er, adventure that I'm working on. And before you start thinking it, I'm not looking for any cash.

I'm just sick and tired of outlaws preying on young pilots and filling their heads with dreams of wealth and easy living. It's all lies. So I'm putting together a crack team of Freelancers—so far it's me and Freelancer Jani and a couple of other folks—called... something. Faye says we need a catchy name if we're going to attract more pilots to the cause.

Damn it, I think these kids are brainwashed, and those outlaw bastards shouldn't be able to get away with it.  They recruit these kids who've got stars in their eyes and hope for a better life, then they treat 'em like disposable garbage. It's evil. I just can't let it stand.

Faye says that with the new Songbird amplifier, we can reach some of the more remote camps for the first time.

I'm not asking for you to come along, not because I don't want your help, but because I need to start training a new generation of Freelancers. Thanks for opening my eyes, it's nice to feel like life has a purpose again.

Hello again, Friend of Haluk,

I have heard that my information resulted in quite the important "discovery" on your part. Congratulations are in order. Perhaps you will keep me in mind, should you find anything of value in those old, dusty Legion ruins? There is business to be done when we next meet.

Mail: Secret Icetide Plans

See Cortex Entry: Mail: Secret Icetide Plans for More Details

We can't discuss this where we can be overheard, but would you be interested in getting a joint Icetide gift for Haluk? He's extremely difficult to buy anything for, and I'm struggling to think of something...

Items I have already considered and rejected as possible presents:
Strider seat covers.
Icetide sweaters.
"Best of Crimson Lancer" compilation (I just... can't. I can't do it.).
fruit basket.
Wrench of the Month Club subscription.
Socks (apparently, I have bought these for him for the past five years straight.).

Please help.

Faye

Owen Corley (4)

See Cortex Entry: Owen Corley (4) for More Details

After Haluk was ambushed by Dominion at the Fortress of Dawn, Owen came to his rescue. A little worse for wear thanks to his dealings with the Monitor, Owen gave you a seal from the Javelin of Dawn to help complete the Dawn Shield. And then left you to fight a Fury by yourself, because some things never change.
