What? They're not grabbits! Their likability isn't up for debate. |
Grabbits are docile carnivorous fauna found everywhere on Coda.
Etymology and Anatomy
Grabbits get their name from corruption of the word Rabbit (A gregarious burrowing plant-eating mammal, with long ears, long hind legs, and a short tail). The plural of Grabbit is Grabbits. The name is also a pun on Grab It (An expression which tells to grab something). A group of Grabbits is called a Cuddle or a Snuggle.
Grabbits are quadrupedal creatures with brightly colored fur: beige, blue, orange, and yellow. They have large fern-like ears that glow in bright colors, two enormous yellow eyes, and several whiskers on either sides of their cheeks. They also have a split tail with glowing tips. Grabbits can stand on two feet, but they cannot walk or run without being on all their limbs. Grabbits have an enormous mouth that can almost looks like a beak. Grabbits are known carnivores. But they mostly eat small flies and leftover carrion of Korox or other creatures. Grabbit droppings are toxic and can permanently stain clothes. Grabbits are very social creatures and live among huge families. Even if one Grabbit is missing, the whole society will be in turmoil. In the wild, usually, only a few are found all by themselves. If anyone approaches these creatures, they play around or run away. Grabbits like shiny objects, so if a lancer’s javelin is shiny enough, they stick around trying to grab their attention.
Grabbits can be pets or pests, as they are friendly, but multiply rapidly. Several Grabbits are known to be pets of people who live in various settlements across Bastion, and there is a way to tame them, which is explained by the Arcanist Venwick Crok in his work Grabbit Training!.
Narrative Involvement
A Grabbit on all Fours
Grabbits are the most common creatures found in Northern Bastion. They aren’t afraid to be around humans, especially if there are shiny objects around them. Rarely, Grabbits run away.
Grabbit themed items are popular among people. There are Grabbit themed cosmetics for javelins. Grabbit meat is also a popular and cheap source of food.
In Mirelands, there is a play which portrays a Grabbit king. Haluk mentions about this when the Freelancer is in the process of silencing the Echoes of Reality Cataclysm.

Behavior and Abilities
Grabbits are docile creatures. They cannot attack. If a Grabbit approaches someone, its because it wants to play. Otherwise, it runs away.
Hidden Attributes
Grabbits have the following hidden attributes:
- Docility: Grabbits are docile carnivores and they usually attack.
Strategy
A Grabbit Playing Dead
Grabbits won’t attack anyone. So, there is no need to kill them.
Doing damage to or defeating these creatures can make them drop ammo and repair packs. If health or ammo is low, collect these resupplies.
Combat
Grabbits have very low health. Because of their docility, they do not attack. So, there really is no need to kill them.
If in any case they must be defeated, any low damage dealing attack can do the job. The Golden Grabbit, however, must be damaged to receive rewards. It can be damaged by doing a significant amount of damage to it and by debuffing it. It does not die, but vanishes due to its hidden attribute. But seriously, though, there is never a reason to kill a grabbit. Even making the Golden Grabbit lose all its health will not kill it, but make it disappear leaving behind a large amount of Cymatic Notes.
Every Named Grabbit
There are several popular Grabbits across Bastion
- Hops the Grabbit from Detective Hops Mysteries
- Brownie the Grabbit that plays the role of Detective Hops in Detective Hops Mysteries
- The Golden Grabbit from Seasonal Expeditions
- Grabbit the Grabbit from Tessi the Tesilar (Yes, the character's name is its eponym)
- Swish the Grabbit that likes to beg Javelins for treats
- Gent a.k.a. Gentleman the Grabbit who alerts his owner Gwynn of any danger
Trivia (May Contain Spoilers)
- Like most creatures of Coda, Grabbits can glow. The ears, tail tips, yellow markings on their head and abdomen can glow very brightly, especially in the dark.
- Grabbits behave like pet animals of Earth, like dogs and cats, when approached.
- Grabbits are a hot and popular topic in Anthem the Game’s community and their likeability is highly debatable. They have left the community polarized: you either love them or want to destroy them.
- Grabbits are the only non-javelin entities that have merchandizing in Bioware’s store.
- There are sayings in Bastions that mention Grabbits, used by Brin: Grey Grabbit’s great paw (a play on Rabbit feet being used as lucky charms on Earth).

- Grabbits are quite tall, about half the height of an average adult.
- In one of the Developer videos, it was stated that they could increase the frequency of Grabbits showing up outside the walls if they wanted around the time of Easter. This was never done, unfortunately.
- Grabbits can become a problem in great numbers. In fact, they can overwhelm a javelin!
- In an unobtainable cortex entry datamined from the game, the Game, the Colossus Gear known as Vassa's Arc is colloquially called Grabbit Popper.
- There is a song in Mirelands called “In the Hall of the Grabbit King,” which is based on an opera, which itself is based on a folk tale about a Grabbit descending into the underworld.
- There are Grabbit Ear themed Masterwork armor parts for each javelin Ranger Grabbit Helmet, Colossus Grabbit Torso, Storm Grabbit Helmet, and Interceptor Grabbit Helmet.
- Before the Release of Anthem, the developers had confirmed the slaughtering of over 7 million Grabbits collectively, during the Alpha and Demos, by the participants.
- The number of pips in the health/armor bar do not represent the total value. This means, two types can have same number of pips, but the stronger type (legendary or elite) will have a significantly higher health than their weaker counterparts.
