Gate

A Gate used by Elementals and Titans

Gates are Shaper related disruptions that can rip open anywhere and be used by anything that can move, especially if it is alive. Although they can occur naturally, they can also be created artificially. It is possible to never reach out of a gate once entered, especially with natural gates, which are caused by interacting (deliberate of otherwise) with Shaper technology. It may be possible to reach a conclusive destination through artificial gates.

The artificial gate technology was invented by Saln Govran and Mentor Sathya. The discovery was so horrific that Govran was never the same and hasn’t been found anywhere. Sathya did not speak of this incident for a really long time, but decided to reveal everything in 468 L.V. through the publishing of An Account of My Time with Saln Govran.

The Freelancer has used gate along with the egress and the dawn shield to enter and exit Echoes of Reality. It is unknown if it has caused any permanent damage from doing so. According to the Freelancer, the people who enter gates will not come out of it as themselves, which is confirmed by Mentor Sathya.

Cortex Entry[]

Check Cortex Entry: Gates for More Information

A small, Shaper-related disruption in reality that can be momentarily ripped open to allow living things to "skip through" and emerge elsewhere. This method of travel is dangerous and wildly unpredictable. Those that risk the gates could be flung to unknown locations or never emerge at all and repeated use of gates has been known to cause madness in humans. Gates are thus used by the desperate, heartless, and already-inhuman. In particular, Scars do not appear to suffer any side effects from using gates, and commonly use them to surprise their prey.

Types of Gates[]

Anchored Artificial Gate

An Artificial Dominion Gate

Enemy factions, certain fauna and Elementals are known to use gates to either spawn themselves to a location, or be forcibly spawned to an unknown location because of interference with Shaper Energy or Shaper Instruments.

There are at least four types of gates:

Natural Gates[]

there are two types of natural gates:

  • Air Spawn Gates: They spawn in mid air, but have a connection with the ground. They can also form in the sky.
  • Ground Spawn Gates: They behave like underground burrows and cannot spawn creatures or people that can hover or fly.

Artificial Gates[]

They are created artificially by Humans, especially the Dominion, and Scars to transport their people from long distances. Artificial gates usually have anchors that tether to the central anchors where, an air gate is ripped open into reality. Gates ripped open are purple if created by the Dominion, or red if created by Scars.

During the encroachment of Echoes of Reality, the Dominion used Crystals as anchors to transport themselves inside the cataclysm. Doctor Harken claimed that such a method was unstable because crystals make poor anchors.

The inventor of these artificial gates are Saln Govran and Mentor Sathya. Destroying the anchors will remove the barrier around the central anchors. Destroying the central anchors will cause the gate to warp away through a large and noisy implosion.

Gatepad[]

Teleportation Pad

A Gatepad inside Echoes of Reality

Gatepads or Gate Devices are special devices found inside certain cataclysmic locations that allow movement. There are two types of teleportation-like movements observed. The Freelancer is one such known user of this type of device inside Echoes of Reality. Gatepads seem to be Shaper in nature, since they have a ferro-fluid like item found on them, just like some Shaper Ruins. There are two types of Gatepads:

  • The first is from one gatepad's location to another gatepad. Such gatepads are bi-directional and can allow quick gating between designated locations.
  • The second is from one gatepad's location to a different location. Such a gatepad is unidirectional and once used will not allow the user to reach the starting point. This starting point has to be reached in some other way.

Special Gates[]

Storm Elemental Spawn Gate

A Special Gate to Spawn Storm Elementals

Special Gates cannot be classified into the above types. Currenty, the only known exmple of such gates are ones forund in The Conduit's Exit. These gates are summoned by the Unfathomed, which itself is an abomination created by Doctor Harken through Shaper Experiments. These gates, while artificial, are unique as they can summon Storm Elementals. They can be destroyed to stop the spawn of these elementals.

Dominion Gates[]

These gates are purple in color. They are designed by Dominion Arcanists so that the Soldiers entering them come out as different people who are willing to do anything for the Dominion. The Dominion always gate-in their soldiers, which may have been how they entered Freemark without having to travel through the Sundric Sea.

Two types of Dominion gates have been observed: Anchored gates and Spawn gates. It is assumed that Anchored gates are used to bring in a large number of Dominion over long distances, while the spawn gates are used for short distance gating-in. All known Dominion gates are air gates.

Known Users:

Scar Gates[]

They are Red and Blue in color. Scars aren’t affected by the side-effects caused by using gates. They use them to surprise their prey. These gates behave similar to the Dominion spawn gates. These gates are always air spawns. Scars aren't affected by anything that happens when they enter gates.

Known Users: All scars are known to use gates. This especially includes the named scars such as:

Creatures[]

These gates are white and pale blue in color if they are air spawns. The ground spawn gates are deep red in color. These are usually natural gates. Chimera, Fauna, and elemental beings are known to use the natural gates either by themselves or because the gates simply spawned around them and they accidentally entered it. Their behavior doesn't seem to be affected by entering gates.

There is also a second kind of gates used by these creatures to enter a place that look like a red patch on the ground. A third kind of gate that is simply made of translucent red swirls can form in the sky in the case of flying creatures; it could be considered an air gate.

Fauna:

Chimera:

Elementals:

Outlaws[]

Outlaw Gates Spawn

Outlaw Spawn through an Underground Gate

Outlaws are desperate and often times gate in to send their “troops” to steal items of interest. As humans, they are affected when they use gates.

Outlaw air spawn gates share the same color as Scars and seem to be similar to the Dominion spawn gates. Because of this it would seem like Scars or Outlaws copied either of their gating technology, which was probably copied from the Dominion.

They also use a ground spawn gate that looks like a red patch, which may be a natural kind of gate that fauna sometimes use, adding to their stupidity.

Trivia[]

  • Hovering in the middle part of any air spawn gate will cause a javelin to be under he Electrocuted status. Such an effect is not seen in ground gates.
