Freemark Ruins was a special environment, located in the nation of Bastion, but is now a ruin on the planet Coda, as of the year 468 LV.
History
After the decimation of the city of Freemark in 458 LV, the cataclysm which destroyed it turned out to be the type that unleashed fire type entities including elementals, lava, and chimera.
Unfortunately, there was no other way to stop this, but to silence the Shaper Relic that caused this cataclysm–the Cenotaph. This relic was deep inside the ruined city of Freemark.
Several attempts were made to silence it. During the initial times of the cataclysm, the first group went until the ruined gazebo. One Freelancer, whose callsign was Trapper, fought with ally lancer, most of whom were killed during this attempt. Trapper recovered a corium crystal now kept in display in the Fort Tarsis Freelancer Enclave.
In 466 LV, another attempt was made to silence the now infamously called Heart of Rage cataclysm. Haluk, Faye, Miller, Adair, Rizzo, Bencana, Pavic, and the then rookie Freelancer teamed up which was the biggest attempt to silence the Cenotaph. There were more than 22 lancers and Cyphers. But the attempt was again unsuccessful, got many killed, and most of the survivors retired.
However, in 468 LV, the Dominion tried to weaponize the Cenptah, led by the Monitor. The Freelancer, with more experience, along with the help of Haluk, Faye, and even an old friend called Owen and support from Tassyn, stopped the Dominion and their Cypher-Lancer leader. Along with this, the Freelancer was fully able to contain the decade long Cataclysm and silence the Cenotaph for good.
Geography and Layout
Since Freemark Ruins is a Special Location, it has a unique map of its own with a unique geography not seen elsewhere. Freemark Ruins can only be visited during daylight. This location is initially found when Haluk’s attempt at silencing the Heart of Rage is initiated. However, a bulk of this location can only be experienced after Corvus contracted the Freelancer to silence the cataclysm, which happens during the final Return to the Heart of Rage. After that the location can be revisited through an unexplained mechanism, very likely through a Gateway Device.
Totally, there are 15 areas explorable by the Freelancer in a limited timed capacity. Each of these areas is given a unique name for convenience. All directions are mentioned with reference to looking at the exit of the area, which forms the entrance of the subsequent area.
Freemark Ruins Area 01: Arrival Area
Entrance of the Arrival Area
The team of Freelancers arrive at a fissure in antecedent valley found in the Freemark Outskirts. A small stream of lava can be seen flowing here. Just above, Haluk's Strider can be seen parked. There may be a few burned trees around here, but its is mostly solidified lava or rock formations that has been burned due to the cataclysmic heat from the lava overflow. Note that this lava is a consequence of the cataclysm and not an eruption from any volcanic activity. The sky is hauntingly beautiful.
Freemark Ruins Area 02: Lava Valley
Entrance of the Lava Valley
Flying ahead of the antecedent valley, there is a colossal chasm flowing with lava. The updraft from this lava could hamper flight and put a javelin in
Burned Status. Some Wyverns can be seen flying, another consequence of the Cataclysm. There are Shaper Structures submerged in the violently percolating lava. Burned trees, charred Blue Flower Plants, and some unknown type of vegetation is found here. On the rear left side, statues from the Legion of Dawn can be seen along with more Shaper Structures. Some wreckage from the decimation of the city can be observed here. A unique feature of this locations the presence of a Cypher Annotation showing the remains of the Wyvern that brought the Freelancer down during the Haluk’s attempt to Silence the Heart of Rage. There is also a platform that uniquely appears with additional items in certain instances of this area. There are also destroyed striders, likely belonging to the Dominion, along with scattered Kinetic Canisters as one heads up towards the city’s entrance.
Freemark Ruins Area 03: Ruined Entrance
Entrance of the Ruined Entrance
This is the entrance to what was originally the bustling city of Freemark. The bridge that connected the city to the entrance is no more. Now a decimated wasteland with a steams and crevices filled with lava. The highest spire of the city is seen here in total ruins, almost as if it was an unfolded ribcage welcoming visitor into the belly of the beast that is the cenotaph. This broken spire is found on the left side of the ruins. There are remnants of the city walls everywhere, with prominent notes of guard spikes protruding out of them. Destruction and burned damage to everything in here. The walls cannot be climbed. But because an Ash Titan destroyed the right-side wall, it created a new pathway to reach the Shaper Ruin, during Haluk’s attempt. Now Dominion enemies and Turrets can be see guarding this area.
Freemark Ruins Area 04: Minor Chasm
Entrance of the Minor Chasm
The Minor Chasm is a small chasm with lava rigorously flowing at its bottom. On the left side, another section of the broken spire can be seen. On the right side, some collapsed buildings, domes, and surprisingly, part of a Shaper Key, emphasizing the fact that for an unknown reason, the Freelancers chose to build the city on top of a Shape Ruin, which came to be known as the Cenotaph. On the far side, at the precipice, Dominion enemies and equipment can be seen.
Freemark Ruins Area 05: Ruined Corridor
Entrance of the Ruined Corridor
This is an interesting area to find in the middle of the ruins. Parts of intact Freemark architecture can be seen here. Broken arches, decimated walls, collapsed domes, and destroyed metallic grilles are found. Surprisingly, there are a few Ranger statues found along the corridor, albeit not even they survived when Freemark turned into Pompei. Such a shame, as the effigies looked like they were on some kind of a fashion walk.
Freemark Ruins Area 06: Ruined Courtyard
Entrance of the Ruined Courtyard
What would a Bastion city be without a courtyard? Even a small settlement like Fort Tarsis has one. But this courtyard was massive with an exceptional gazebo in the center. Surrounding it is, of course, more ruined structures, collapsed metallic parts, dome and arches reduced to bricks and mortar. Interesting bit about this gazebo is that its actual location with reference to the original city of Freemark is not truly known; in the sense that there wasn’t a particularly cylindrical shaped Gazebo in the courtyard of the city before being decimated. It is though that this change was caused by the cataclysm modifying reality. In its center, an Ancient Ash Titan can be found, waiting. The sky looks ominous from here, especially with the sun hidden behind the thick smog.
Freemark Ruins Area 07: Ruined Vestibule
Entrance of the Ruined Vestibule
This is a minor vestibule that connects courtyard to the foyer. There isn’t much going on here, except for a prominent lava river. This river can put a javelin under the Burned Status it reaches too close to it. This place very likely had a series of staircases to lead to the next area, as observed by the ruined steps found near the entrance and exit.
Freemark Ruins Area 08: Ruined Foyer
Entrance of the Ruined Foyer
The Ruined Foyer, isn’t truly a Foyer of any type. It was an open courtyard-like area with a small pavilion in the center. Since the destruction, only a part of the pavilion can be seen. On one side there is a stream of lava beside what looks like another spire melded into the igneous rocks. On the other there are more walls. Sky can be seen here, but it is not as poignant as the courtyard’s.
Freemark Ruins Area 09: Ruined Atrium
Entrance of the Ruined Atrium
The atrium was originally likely a cul-de-sac type of location, but with all housing attached to each other. But now it is clearly in shambles, and all the light it can get can be seen making this area bright. Again, with more destroyed walls which are led to through a staircase from the entrance, this location shows a few prominent ledges, which were likely parts of the houses. A Dominion Grounder can be seen in the lower level. There is also an upper level, again in ruins, which leads to the next location.
Freemark Ruins Area 10: Ruined Passage
Entrance of the Ruined Passage
Ruined passage is an ante chamber which has some destroyed building in the center. Interestingly, there is a heavy smoke emanating from the ground here. From the bits of remnant architecture, it is possible to conclude that there was a bridge of some type on one side, with a small tower that had an arch under it.
Freemark Ruins Area 11: Relic Chamber
Entrance of the Relic Chamber
The Relic Chamber is an open area which has an unstable Speaker Relic tethered to an Echo Lock Ruin. There is a Shaper Key to which the relic is attached, and the top of this, around this chamber, there is a large ring structure, severed at one side. There are several protruding Shaper structures found scattered in this chamber. In the middle, there was likely a small pavilion, which was destroyed during the advent of the cataclysm. There is lava streaming from the far end of the chamber. The Shaper Door on the side of the relic cannot be opened by containing the Echo Lock. Instead, guardians must be defeated to find its keys.
Freemark Ruins Area 12: Ruined Hallway
Entrance of the Ruined Hallway
This is a hallway that ultimately leads to the Cenotaph Ruins. This hall was likely a narrow passage to an underground location that was hidden. There are a few intact arches, still in ruins. Lava is seen emerging from the ground, among more decimated brick walls and structures.
Freemark Ruins Area 13: Igneous Ravine
Entrance of the Igneous Ravine
This minor ravine is mostly made up of solidified lava, turning everything around it to igneous. Some contours and many large Shaper Structures can be seen here and there. This ravine leads into either Area 14 of the Freemark Ruins or the Cenotaph ruins themselves. If the path to Area 14 is chosen, there are some damaged metallic beams found at the end of the passage.
Freemark Ruins Area 14: Cenotaph Antechamber
Entrance of the Cenotaph Antechamber
This antechamber is where the original Cenotaph’s main structure can be seen. While this location is a part of the Cenotaph Ruins, it is included here because it makes more sense in the context of exploration. This was where, Harken and the Monitor entered to attach the special device to harness the relic’s power. The location was previously open with a bridge leading to the relic, now, even the bridge is a part of the ground. The remnants of the Cenotaph’s pieces can be seen on the far edge.
Freemark Ruins Area 15: Major Chasm
Entrance of the Major Chasm
This chamber is also a part of the Cenotaph Ruins, but mentioned here for easy exploration. This is a large chasm, albeit not as large as the lava valley, it is similar in its destructive force. Shaper Structures have collapsed here, submerged in the raging lava. There is a prominent broken arch along the way. This location is only accessible when inside the Cenotaph Ruins. Igneous rock formations are prominent along the sides. This is the only known location where fire, acid and lightning type of environment show up.
