The following excerpts from the a wide range of literature and information give some insights about Freemark.

Freelancers (4)

See Cortex Entry: Freelancers (4) for More Details

The public's confidence in Freelancers was shaken after the Freemark disaster and the failure to silence the Heart of Rage. Many looked to the Sentinels, an organization that not only escaped blame for Freemark's destruction, but grew in esteem since then. The Sentinels tried to maintain order both within and outside the Fort Tarsis walls, an impossible job that would lead to additional tragedy, despite their great courage.

Arcanist Farn Belharrow, speech to the Council of Mentors, Antium.

Furies

See Cortex Entry: Furies for More Details

The Dominion engage in numerous biological experiments inspired by their belief that they are meant to harness the Anthem of Creation's power. Furies are among the most visible and destructive results. Dominion defectors whisper about a factory where chosen prisoners were taken to “serve the cause” before they were exposed to the Anthem of Creation through Shaper relics.
After Freemark's destruction, Emperor Valus Dell proclaimed: “Like the chimera, Furies are no longer what they once were. Even their Dominion masters are wary of them, for their only thought is to kill. If you pity these poor souls, put them out of their misery.”

Freelancer Enclave: Corium Crystal

See Cortex Entry: Freelancer Enclave: Corium Crystal for More Details

The rarest mineral current known, corium is only found within the heart of a titan. Freelancer Trapper recovered this crystal from the Heart of Rage during the First Freemark Expedition, just a few weeks after the fall of Freemark. The titan, nicknamed “Javelin Breaker,” wiped out most of the expedition before it was finally destroyed.

Freelancer Enclave: Junkhead’s Trophy

See Cortex Entry: Freelancer Enclave: Junkhead’s Trophy for More Details

This trophy, taken from the famous battle of Junkhead Basin, is an actual piece of Junkhead's “throne” and is thought to be the inspiration for all Scar banners.
The only other known fragment of Junkhead's throne was in the Freemark Enclave, and is believed destroyed.
The Sentinels of Fort Tarsis presented their piece of the throne to the Freelancers, as a sign of good faith and hope for renewed lancer cooperation in the future.

The Dominion (1)

See Cortex Entry: The Dominion (1) for More Details

The expansionist, military regime from Stralheim, that destroyed the city of Freemark when they attempted to control the Cenotaph. While their technological advances are noteworthy, their methods have shown little regard for life or individuality.

The Monitor (1)

See Cortex Entry: The Monitor (1) for More Details

A rare Dominion operative who is both a skilled lancer and cypher. He is invaluable to the Dominion's expansion plans. Monitors undergo special training to make them into near-omniscient secret police. Corvus first heard whispers about the Monitors from small bands of refugees fleeing south from Stralheim to Freemark.

Doctor Harken (1)

See Cortex Entry: Doctor Harken (1) for More Details

Little is known about Doctor Harken, a Dominion Arcanist, except for his spectacular and infamous failed experiment conducted during the invasion of Freemark. According to survivors, he was personally responsible for activating the Cenotaph, unleashing the Heart of Rage, and leveling the city.

Northern Bastion

See Cortex Entry: Northern Bastion for More Details

Nestled between the Sundric Sea and the mountains, Northern Bastion has a plethora of Shaper constructs and historical Legion of Dawn architecture, including the Fortress of Dawn. The population of this area has depleted greatly since the tragic destruction of Freemark and the subsequent mass exodus of the Arcanist settlement of Shadowmark. Fort Tarsis, the halfway point between Antium and the cities of Freemark and Heliost respectively, is the only settlement that remains in this area.

Chimera

See Cortex Entry: Chimera for More Details

Perimodes, Urry, and Gillimer spent the night rounding up the unfortunate wolven chimera, until only one remained. Perimodes, who took no pleasure in his task, called his fellowship to halt, so he might speak with the altered beast.
"What would you have me say?" asked the chimera.
"I wish to hear your voice. I must know if all of your kind is as cruel."
The chimera spewed icy breath at Perimodes. "I do not speak with men. I destroy them. I must destroy all."
Urry laughed. "Well, at least it knows what it wants."

The Heart of Rage (1)

See Cortex Entry: The Heart of Rage (1) for More Details

An unending, violent Cataclysm created when the Dominion attempted to seize control of the Shaper relic known as the Cenotaph. The ensuing forces destroyed the city of Freemark.
The Heart Of Rage is like no Cataclysm we've seen before. The wind throws around enormous debris like children's toys. Striders have little chance of surviving the Cataclysm intact, and lancers have died attempting to travel inside. There is no immediate solution, but if its expansion remains unchecked, the creatures and destruction it creates will ravage the countryside. Shadowmark has already been evacuated. Fort Tarsis may eventually be next

— From Cataclysms and their Effects, 44th Edition

The Heart of Rage (3)

See Cortex Entry: The Heart of Rage (3) for More Details

Remember Freemark! Our thriving city to the north, gone in an instant. Many thousands of voices swallowed by the Shaper's tool. Remember! We must remember them... for in telling their tales and singing their song, we honor them, and bring them life once more. Only when we cease to remember is anyone truly gone.

Valus Dell, 12th Emperor of Bastion

Anzu (3)

See Cortex Entry: Anzu (3) for More Details

Under the hill, there lived an Anzu named Ezurite, whose cruel and nefarious ways were known to all travelers of the high road. Furious that the urgoth who once worshipped him were no more, Ezurite found amusement in bringing ruin to peaceful settlements and devouring whole herds of korox. This was the task the Emperor set before them—to rid the north of this malicious monster and clear the trade route to Freemark. And so, after settling their tab and getting a night's sleep, the Freelancers Three set off in search of the monstrosity.

— From The Freelancers Three by Fallon Dalathie

The Cenotaph

See Cortex Entry: The Cenotaph for More Details

A large Shaper ruin that destroyed the city of Freemark and produced the Heart of Rage (Cataclysm) Cataclysm when the Dominion attempted to seize control of it. Most of Freemark's population was unaware of the Cenotaph's existence until it was too late. How the Dominion knew that the Cenotaph existed remains a mystery, but there is little doubt they arrived at Freemark specifically to activate the ruin. It is not known if the Dominion expected the casualties on both sides that followed their attempt to control the Cenotaph. In 466 L.V., Freelancers entered the Heart of Rage to try to shut down the Cenotaph, but nearly all of them died in the failed attempt.

RETURN TO THE HEART OF RAGE

See Cortex Entry: RETURN TO THE HEART OF RAGE for More Details

With their Dawn Shield finally ready, the Freelancer ended the tale where it began by venturing into ruined Freemark and the nightmare of ash, flames, and death that lay within. This time, the storm's horrors were made worse by waves of Dominion soldiers left behind by the Monitor on his mad race to the Cenotaph. There, in the eye of the storm, the Freelancer found him waiting. No longer a lancer or even a human being, but transformed into a monstrous extension of the Cenotaph's power which guarded the way to the relic. Although the Monitor turned the storm itself against them, no amount of fire or lightning could stop the Freelancer. The Monitor was slain and the Cenotaph, at last, was silenced, bringing peace to the Heart Of Rage.

Mail: Citizens Move to Ban Relics in Fort Tarsis

See Cortex Entry: Mail: Citizens Move to Ban Relics in Fort Tarsis for More Details

A group of citizens have proposed that the governor ban Shaper relics from Fort Tarsis.

"These relics can go off at anytime, and bringing one—even if it's dormant—into the fort is a huge danger to all of us," said group leader Diena Saihl, "Look at what happened to Matthias Sumner. He poked a relic and suddenly there are three of him. He had no idea that would happen. Do we want to end up like Dunar? Or Freemark?"

Arcanist Mentor Orun, visiting from Antium, responded to the proposed ban. "What would they have Arcanists do? Study relics outside the wall? That's ridiculous. The only reason humans survive here is because we seek to understand our world. Besides, the likelihood that our entire world is a bundle of Shaper ruins and relics is high. Banning them from settlements will not make anyone safer "

Council will bring the matter to vote later this year.

Mail: Fort Bulletin: Celebration

See Cortex Entry: Mail: Fort Bulletin: Celebration for More Details

With the recent success against the Heart of Rage, celebrations have been planned throughout the fort, including a number of family events for celebrants of all ages to enjoy. Whether shopping for commemorative items, enjoying a special meal, or toasting with a thematically-themed cocktail, there's something for everyone.

In addition to the more jovial festivities, a quiet ceremony will be held for those who wish to commemorate Freemark and the toll the Heart of Rage has taken over the years.

Lost Scrapbook (4)

Antium News [Archives].

— Tragic news of yet another outlaw attack on a passenger strider between Antium and Fortuo. The ruthless gang was tipped off that smugglers had stuffed a hoard of major crystals under the floorboards. Although the thieves only wanted the crystals, Freelancers discovered most of the passengers dead in a gruesome scene. The outlaws spared only the children, who were taken to an farm near Pontiex.

— Congratulations to Freelancer Thetes, who celebrated his birthday by winning the Venter Race in his custom Interceptor. Since no one admits to letting the veteran win, we must assume his victory was fair and square.

Icetide is expected to begin in the next month or two. Harvest missions will be run out of the Freemark enclave this year. Freelancers from all areas are welcome to join.

Radiant Fortress (Weapon)

See Cortex Entry: Radiant Fortress (Weapon) for More Details

Countless Sentinels owe their lives to this gun's aiming action and its responsive ability to restore shields. The Sentinels of Freemark have been heralded for their deadly use of this shotgun during the Dominion invasion. This shotgun has seen action on all the city and fort walls of Bastion. Sentinels swear by its ability to reward a defender's courage and skill.

Scar Tower

See Cortex Entry: Scar Tower for More Details

And now the Scars have built their most significant structure, the Scar Tower, equipped with defensive weapons they have never had before. This would never have happened if the Freelancers had not gone north, if they had stayed at Fort Tarsis and done their job. Now its destruction is impossible, and the Scars will thrive.

— From The Heart of Rage: A Discussion by Edgar Cye

Shadow Lock

See Cortex Entry: Shadow Lock for More Details

Here be the pass to Freemark.

“So built to contain our woes, and stop the concern of others from adding to our peril.”

Wrecked Gazebo

See Cortex Entry: Wrecked Gazebo for More Details

A Sentinel watchtower and a dock from striders on their way to and from Freemark. When Vassa built Anshar, he erected four gazebos around the perimeter to serve as watchtowers, but the residents of Shadowmark used them for everything from civic offices to the Chronicler's Volary. As with any high-standing structure, Sentinels would always be present.

North Rock (District)

See Cortex Entry: North Rock (District) for More Details

Once you’ve enjoyed the intricate structures of Anshar, head out of Shadowmark to this delightful picnic spot. Nothing goes better with a saltberry sandwich and a cup of tea than the vista from North Rock. This secure location is where Shadowmark holds their annual summer festival. While not as large as Freemark's tournament, it's still a delightful place to watch lancers battle it out for the big prize in the spirit of sportsmanship.

Southern Reach (District)

See Cortex Entry: Southern Reach (District) for More Details

It is absolutely vital that the Southern Reach remain in our control. With Freemark gone, and the gate to Heliost overrun by Scars, the road to Antium is our only source of food and supplies.

The Hureen Slide (District)

See Cortex Entry: The Hureen Slide (District) for More Details

Site of the tragic Hureen Slide. A large caravan of merchant striders from the Hureen company were travelling to Freemark, only to be buried by a landslide that killed most of the crew. Those who survived managed to walk to the Tower Road before wyvern caught them. Freelancers found the lone survivor, hiding in a tree nearby.

See Cortex Entry: Freemark: Living Up to Its Name... for More Details

One of the oldest cities in Bastion, second only to Antium in population. Be sure to see the legendary sculpture "The Colossus of Tarsis," observe some of the early Legion architecture, and visit the colorful marketplace and Freelancer wall. Freemark is also known for its thriving culinary scene. When on the north side, take an hour to have some spiced tea at the Blue Wyvern, or roast korox at Tempo's grill. Then prepare to dance the night away at "The Happy Anzu."

The Call of the Anthem

See Cortex Entry: The Call of the Anthem for More Details

Our strider is down and we're waiting for help from Freemark. Technical difficulty. It has been a long journey, mainly because Harvold won't stop blathering about the Anthem of Creation. He somehow believes it's his job to educate me on the Anthem, the Shapers, the Great Wheel and all that. It's such gazick crap. Until I see—or hear—proof that the Anthem exists, I'm not joining any choir. I swear, if Harvold brings it up again, I will strangle him.

— Diary. Author unknown.

High Road

See Cortex Entry: High Road for More Details

This strider path to Freemark begins at Fort Tarsis, makes its way past Arath, through Blackshore, and up to the lock just outside Shadowmark. In the early days of human freedom, the High Road had considerable Sentinel support, but between the migration of dangerous wildlife and unstable Shaper ruins, the endeavor was halted, and the Sentinels returned to Antium. The recent issue of Scars locating along the High Road has made travel to the north extremely dangerous.

Fort Tarsis (1)

See Cortex Entry: Fort Tarsis (1) for More Details

Originally a military outpost, this halfway point between Antium and Freemark serves as a place for striders to stop and rest. This is the second incarnation of Fort Tarsis. While the agricultural experiment around Honor Valley caused a population surge, it has dwindled due to the ongoing issues with Scars.

Fort Tarsis (12)

See Cortex Entry: Fort Tarsis (12) for More Details

On your way through to Freemark, you'll have to stop at Fort Tarsis, which is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy some of Bastion's most enchanting vistas. The fort sits on top of the breathtaking Tarsis Falls, which flow into a series of smaller falls, attracting a large variety of fauna to the area, which you can safely observe from strong, elevated walls. If sticking around for a day trip, check out the underground passage beneath the fort, once said to be home to the famous Ezurite Anzu, and then jet off for visit to the Haven, Honor Valley Dam, or the awe inspiring Ring Gate. Finish off your day with a nightcap at the local bar "The Shifty Korox," which is under new management.
