Collection Details

A total of 25 cortex entries make reference to the Freelancers.

The following Cortex Entries tell about the Freelancers and how they operate and what they do as a Faction.

Agent Yarrow (1)

See Cortex Entry: Agent Yarrow (1) for More Details

A lifelong daredevil, Freelancer Yarrow retired long before the events of the Heart of Rage. He embraces Freelancer beliefs and spent his life keeping his flock—and anyone who will listen—on the right path. The only path. A lifetime of unfiltered exuberance for life has slowed him down, but his passion for preaching the gospel of the Freelancers remains strong.

Agent Yarrow (2)

See Cortex Entry: Agent Yarrow (2) for More Details

I didn't know what it was... a crouching, massive form silhouetted by the Cataclysm, maybe three times as tall as my javelin. It was eating something. There was a flash of light. I saw it clear. It was nothing I had seen in my long years. Something that had crept out of a different place. Another flash and it rose up to its full height and howled. In pain? In anger? I cannot tell you. Another crack of light and it was gone, pulled back to that terrible place known only to Shapers. The storm disappeared. Silence.

I was the only person to see that monster. The only person that would ever see it. That is the beauty, the responsibility, of being a Freelancer.

There is much to discover out there. I tell these stories in hopes that those restless few in this new generation consider searching for what they are missing beyond the wall.

Freelancer Yarrow

Agent Yarrow (3)

See Cortex Entry: Agent Yarrow (3) for More Details

Without Freelancers, there is no future beyond the wall, no plans, no civilization—only rough survival. Does that sound crazy?

Yes, maybe it is.

People say we aren't needed. Yes, this is easy to say when you are comfortable behind the wall, with the Sentinels marching back and forth to keep the jungle away. Perhaps less easy from the inside of a moving strider, despite plates of steel between you and the monsters. And finally, not so easy for those who find themselves out there alone. There are no words, just silence.

Freelancer Yarrow

Freelancers (1)

See Cortex Entry: Freelancers (1) for More Details

Independent lancers who chose to follow General Tarsis and the Path of Valor. They silence cataclysms and aid those in need beyond the safety of the walls. Freelancers act without direct orders from any central organization. Though there is no official code, the modern perception of Freelancer values is attributed to Dalathie's The Freelancers Three.

Valor to serve the people, regardless of their station.
Courage to bring silence when the Anthem sing.
Faith to keep my word and the word of my brethren.
Trust that the free answer when called.
Strong Alone, Stronger Together.

Freelancers (2)

See Cortex Entry: Freelancers (2) for More Details

As explorers and researchers, we often find ourselves requiring a Freelancer's sure hand to protect us from the wild world and, occasionally, ourselves. They give their lives for us, and yet we do not often acknowledge the value they bring beyond their martial skills. Freelancers are a special kind of historian. They can often tell you what's over the next hill, what happened there, and with some reluctance, who may rest there still.

Arcanist Fell Watuk

Freelancers (3)

See Cortex Entry: Freelancers (3) for More Details

The problem with Freelancers is their disorganization. How can they protect us from threats when their coordination is based on individuality? Their refusal to follow a leader has become an issue since the Heart of Rage incident. It is my opinion that the Freelancers should join the Sentinels as a protective unit, or get out of their way.

— From The Heart of Rage: A Discussion

Freelancers (4)

See Cortex Entry: Freelancers (4) for More Details

The public's confidence in Freelancers was shaken after the Freemark disaster and the failure to silence the Heart of Rage. Many looked to the Sentinels, an organization that not only escaped blame for Freemark's destruction, but grew in esteem since then. The Sentinels tried to maintain order both within and outside the Fort Tarsis walls, an impossible job that would lead to additional tragedy, despite their great courage.

Arcanist Farn Belharrow, speech to the Council of Mentors, Antium.

Deadfall Ambush

See Cortex Entry: Deadfall Ambush for More Details

"I was talking some Freelancer though a contract when the call came in. A distress beacon was activated in the area. Without a thought, I sent the team. I realized too late the call was a trap. Outlaws had killed a Freelancer and somehow rigged his suit to send out a distress signal. I know what to look for now, but the price was too high for that lesson.”

— Freelancer Yarrow

Skirmish at Scavenger Point

See Cortex Entry: Skirmish at Scavenger Point for More Details

“Don’t like the Scars none, but I have to say: Arcanists went looking for trouble, without a doubt. My guess is Scars were scratching around the area because of all the unnatural Shaper energy. The Arcanists must have heard about those Scars gathering and wanted a piece. They hired me and my strider to bring them to the spot. I would have never agreed to any of it had I been told. Problem is, more Scars started popping up everywhere when we arrived. I tried to get out of there, but something was blocking my strider from moving. I was thinking we were all as good as dead, but a group of Freelancers came along and got rid of whatever was tying up my strider so we could get out of there. I didn’t see much of the scrap, but I know it was bad bloody. We owe those Freelancers our lives.”

Renny Quint, strider operator

The Fire Shrine Pilgrimage

See Cortex Entry: The Fire Shrine Pilgrimage for More Details

For centuries, Freelancers have ventured to the Abyssal Loch, where they descend into the Fire Shrine Caves to ritually honor the dead. They claimed the site as their own long ago, and risk their lives to keep the ancient fires burning even today
The tunnel network is famed for its corruption of local wildlife and the unnatural storm that rages constantly within its cut-stone halls. The inner workings of this unique geological area may never be unraveled to the Arcanists' satisfaction, but the seasonal lighting of the shrines continues to serve as an important reminder that no Freelancer is alone, and no sacrifice is forgotten.

Freelancer Enclave: Argentum Tran's Sidearm

See Cortex Entry: Freelancer Enclave: Argentum Tran's Sidearm for More Details

This pistol belonged to the legendary Sentinel Argentum Tran. She was stationed in Fort Tarsis as a young officer, and fought on the front lines during the War of Seven Luminaries. After distinguishing herself in the battle at Junkhead Basin, she was recalled to the capitol, and left this gun to a close friend among her squadmates. She reportedly said, “It's never failed me, and neither have you. It's a perfect match.”

The sidearm has been passed down among active duty Sentinels ever since. And now it has been given to the Freelancers as a sign of lancer fellowship.

Freelancer Enclave: Captured Dominion Archive

See Cortex Entry: Freelancer Enclave: Captured Dominion Archive for More Details

This archive contains stolen Dominion orders issued by the Monitor, obtained by Corvus Agent REDACTED at the cost of her life. Freelancer REDACTED recovered it from Fort Tarsis on a mission for Corvus to DETAILS REDACTED — NOT FOR GENERAL KNOWLEDGE.
This archive was originally turned over to Corvus Factor REDACTED here at the fort, but has been returned to the Enclave as a trophy, following a careful examination of its contents by intelligence analysts.

Freelancer Enclave: Chaingunner Dalgren's Tools

See Cortex Entry: Freelancer Enclave: Chaingunner Dalgren's Tools for More Details

Recovered by Freelancer Rythe from an outlaw camp where former Engineer Alata “Chaingunner” Dalgren had built a makeshift forge; she was constructing javelin armor for her band to use against Sentinel patrols.

Rythe left the outlaw forge in pieces too small for the fort Arcanists to study. Dalgren's tools have been released to the Enclave following a thorough examination.

Freelancer Enclave: Corium Crystal

See Cortex Entry: Freelancer Enclave: Corium Crystal for More Details

The rarest mineral current known, corium is only found within the heart of a titan. Freelancer Trapper recovered this crystal from the Heart of Rage during the First Freemark Expedition, just a few weeks after the fall of Freemark. The titan, nicknamed “Javelin Breaker,” wiped out most of the expedition before it was finally destroyed.

Freelancer Enclave: Junkhead’s Trophy

See Cortex Entry: Freelancer Enclave: Junkhead’s Trophy for More Details

This trophy, taken from the famous battle of Junkhead Basin, is an actual piece of Junkhead's “throne” and is thought to be the inspiration for all Scar banners.
The only other known fragment of Junkhead's throne was in the Freemark Enclave, and is believed destroyed.
The Sentinels of Fort Tarsis presented their piece of the throne to the Freelancers, as a sign of good faith and hope for renewed lancer cooperation in the future.

Freelancer Enclave: Resonance Capsule

See Cortex Entry: Freelancer Enclave: Resonance Capsule for More Details

Recovered from a Legion of Dawn era ruin, this is believed to be one of the resonance capsules used by Arden Vassa in his early studies of ember.
Arcanists used devices of this type for centuries; they led directly to the invention of signets and gateway technology.

Freelancer Enclave: Scar Seeker Mine

See Cortex Entry: Freelancer Enclave: Scar Seeker Mine for More Details

Obtained by Freelancer Yarrow during the War of Seven Luminaries, this was the first completely intact example of Scar technology the Arcanists were able to study. Because of this unexploded mine, Arcanists were able to research better means of detecting and tracking Scar weaponry and disseminate these to cyphers across Bastion and beyond, vastly improving Freelancer and Sentinel effectiveness against Scars.

Freelancer Enclave: Xagular Skull

See Cortex Entry: Freelancer Enclave: Xagular Skull for More Details

Xagular are medium-sized predatory animals native to the mountains near Heliost. They are often depicted in art of the Legion era as companions of the urgoth. The skulls of xagular are considered good luck, bringing health and happiness to all who touch them.
This specimen was recovered by Lucky Jak, who was attacked by the creature while protecting Arcanist researchers at a Shaper relic site.

Haluk (1)

See Cortex Entry: Haluk (1) for More Details

Haluk was the Freelancer's mentor and a leader during the attempt to silence the Heart of Rage years ago. He and the Freelancer then parted on bad terms. Originally from the Mirelands, Haluk was a high-spirited leader among the Freelancers, though the failure at the Heart of Rage made him grumpy, argumentative, and jaded.

Haluk (2)

See Cortex Entry: Haluk (2) for More Details

For the tenth time: no comment! You hear me? I don’t want to talk about it, okay? You want details on what it was like watching Adair get torn apart? That what you want? Not happening. They’re dead. All dead. So leave me the hell alone! I’m done here!

Freelancer Haluk (Overheard in Enclave)

Haluk (3)

See Cortex Entry: Haluk (3) for More Details

Faye, I swear I didn’t leave the toilet seat up. Honest. The strider’ll hit a bump and the seat just kinda pops open. Wasn’t me.

— Freelancer Haluk

Haluk (4)

See Cortex Entry: Haluk (4) for More Details

My limp? Easy. I had a disagreement with an ursix.

— Freelancer Haluk (Overheard in the market)

Haluk (5)

What happened to my leg? Nothing. Born this way. Why’d you ask?

— Freelancer Haluk (Overheard in Enclave)

Haluk (6)

How’d I get my limp? Took a tumble off a cliff fighting a wyvern.

— Freelancer Haluk (Overheard by the Forge)

I Laugh at Danger

See Cortex Entry: I Laugh at Danger for More Details

They told me if I wanted to write something people would remember, I should write what I know. Well, if you’re going to write a novel about high adventure in Bastion, you can’t do it while your genius goes unappreciated selling junk to people from a merchant stall in Fort Tarsis. I will be the hero I’ve always wanted to be. I will be a hero of Bastion. I will live my novel!
