Abyssal Loch (District)
See Cortex Entry: Abyssal Loch (District) for More Details

The Anzu emerged from the deep waters near the camp. Hatred for the Freelancers burned in his heart. How dare they chase him from his cave? How dare they eat and drink merrily, when he had been forced to hide under the water, eating cold phiranix. He watched them around their fire on the rock face, so confident in their mastery. Well, he would show them, He would remind them why humans would never rule this world.

Agent Yarrow (1)

A lifelong daredevil, Freelancer Yarrow retired long before the events of the Heart of Rage. He embraces Freelancer beliefs and spent his life keeping his flock—and anyone who will listen—on the right path. The only path. A lifetime of unfiltered exuberance for life has slowed him down, but his passion for preaching the gospel of the Freelancers remains strong.

Agent Yarrow (2)

I didn't know what it was... a crouching, massive form silhouetted by the Cataclysm, maybe three times as tall as my javelin. It was eating something. There was a flash of light. I saw it clear. It was nothing I had seen in my long years. Something that had crept out of a different place. Another flash and it rose up to its full height and howled. In pain? In anger? I cannot tell you. Another crack of light and it was gone, pulled back to that terrible place known only to Shapers. The storm disappeared. Silence.
I was the only person to see that monster. The only person that would ever see it. That is the beauty, the responsibility, of being a Freelancer.
There is much to discover out there. I tell these stories in hopes that those restless few in this new generation consider searching for what they are missing beyond the wall.

Agent Yarrow (3)
See Cortex Entry: Agent Yarrow (3) for More Details

Without Freelancers, there is no future beyond the wall, no plans, no civilization—only rough survival. Does that sound crazy?
Yes, maybe it is.
People say we aren't needed. Yes, this is easy to say when you are comfortable behind the wall, with the Sentinels marching back and forth to keep the jungle away. Perhaps less easy from the inside of a moving strider, despite plates of steel between you and the monsters. And finally, not so easy for those who find themselves out there alone. There are no words, just silence.

Anzu (3)

Under the hill, there lived an Anzu named Ezurite, whose cruel and nefarious ways were known to all travelers of the high road. Furious that the urgoth who once worshipped him were no more, Ezurite found amusement in bringing ruin to peaceful settlements and devouring whole herds of korox. This was the task the Emperor set before them—to rid the north of this malicious monster and clear the trade route to Freemark. And so, after settling their tab and getting a night's sleep, the Freelancers Three set off in search of the monstrosity.

Avenging Herald (Weapon)
See Cortex Entry: Avenging Herald (Weapon) for More Details

This heavy pistol, that gains power while hovering, was inspired by tragedy. A strider went down on the path from Heliost to Antium. Nobody knows how or why it went down, but they do know the survivors were run down and torn apart by wolven. A Freelancer who lost his family in the incident dedicated his life to hunting down wolven. He would track down a pack and then hover over them, shooting until they were all dead. A wolven-hating Arcanist created this pistol to help the Freelancer with his terrible vengeance.

Balm of Gavinicus (Weapon)
See Cortex Entry: Balm of Gavinicus (Weapon) for More Details

Fire grenades with [FIRE WEAPON BUTTON] and detonate them by pressing [AIM BUTTON].
Balm of Gavinicus has allowed Freelancers to help establish perimeters and then hold them against many an enemy. Grandmaster Gavinicus was on a contract when his group ran into three chimeric ursix. His steady arm and ability saved the lives of everyone in his party. They described Gavinicus as "calm and terrible at the same time." Gavinicus was never without his grenade launcher, and his mastery of it became linked to the weapon itself.

Blackshore (District)

The Freelancer failure at the Heart of Rage has had one other unfortunate result. With Freelancer numbers much reduced, the Scar population flourishes again, spreading to nearby Lakeshore, occupying the mine and destroying the water system in the area. Scar scouts are once again an everyday occurrence, making travel more dangerous than ever. Between this and the occupation at the gate to Heliost, I can't help but feel that the Scars are winning.

Fires shells that detonate and shatter over a wide area, doing damage to anything in that area. Some Freelancers find it extremely useful when dealing with enemies that attack in swarms.

Chimera

Perimodes, Urry, and Gillimer spent the night rounding up the unfortunate wolven chimera, until only one remained. Perimodes, who took no pleasure in his task, called his fellowship to halt, so he might speak with the altered beast.
"What would you have me say?" asked the chimera.
"I wish to hear your voice. I must know if all of your kind is as cruel."
The chimera spewed icy breath at Perimodes. "I do not speak with men. I destroy them. I must destroy all."
Urry laughed. "Well, at least it knows what it wants."

This now dormant Shaper relic juts out of the earth like walls arranged in a large circular pattern. It became active around 250 L.V. and is thought to be connected to water boiling in the nearby water source, The Bowl. The Scar Luminary known as Junkhead undertook efforts to unearth this relic, but was defeated. Freelancers silenced the relic and it has not been active since.

Dallus landed near the unmapped Shaper entrance. His Colossus javelin landed thunderously and announced his arrival.
"Kista? It's Dallus," he said, "I've found a door, maybe? What do you think, Ada? Could this be the same ruin?"
Cypher Ada hesitated. "The ruin is interfering with my connection somehow."
"Then it has to be the same one!" Dallus declared with too much optimism.
"Wait, Dallus! If you enter the ruin I—" Ada's voice cut off as the Freelancer launched himself through the door and the connection cut out.
"Ansen!" Dallus shouted, rocketing into the darkness. "You hear me? I'm on my way!"

Crimson Lancer Rewrite: Season Eleven, Episode Twelve
Back in Fort Tarsis, Freelancers Henley and Braxton carefully filed their incident reports to Sentinel command, to properly inform the fort about the acid Titan they encountered earlier, and this greatly improved morale in the fort because Freelancers and Sentinels should cooperate instead of perpetuating petty lancer rivalries. Also, Bianca fell down a well.

Cycle of Pain (Weapon)
See Cortex Entry: Cycle of Pain (Weapon) for More Details

Cycle of Pain has become a favorite of Freelancers who believe the best offence is a good defense. Warrel Pender had an early model of this LMG in his hands when he rallied lancers during the Scar attack on the terraces of Fort Tarsis. His repeated counterattacks decimated swarming groups of Scars and inspired the other lancers. Now it's considered good luck to bear this weapon when launching a counterattack.

Dawnguard
See Cortex Entry: Dawnguard for More Details

A popular radio drama featuring the adventures of the Freelancer guild known as the Dawnguard. Produced by the Antium Radio Transmission (ART), the first season of Dawnguard was originally conceived as a hard-hitting realistic drama, but fans believe the show revealed its true self in the second season when the character of Alhazen told Walker that he was actually a human chimera. The show has since become a longstanding sensation with increasingly dramatic storylines and the common "Electrify this!" catchphrase. The show has been renewed for a ninth season.

"I was talking some Freelancer though a contract when the call came in. A distress beacon was activated in the area. Without a thought, I sent the team. I realized too late the call was a trap. This rapid-fire rifle's creation is one of the most mystical of the weapons in a Freelancer's arsenal. It is said an Engineer or Forgewright in days of old was repairing a damaged assault rifle when an elemental micro-storm enveloped her forge. When she removed the rifle, it was discovered it had the ability to add power to a javelin's elemental weaponry. This may be one of the earliest instances of utilizing ember for weaponry.

This pistol belonged to the legendary Sentinel Argentum Tran. She was stationed in Fort Tarsis as a young officer, and fought on the front lines during the War of Seven Luminaries. After distinguishing herself in the battle at Junkhead Basin, she was recalled to the capitol, and left this gun to a close friend among her squadmates. She reportedly said, “It's never failed me, and neither have you. It's a perfect match.”
The sidearm has been passed down among active duty Sentinels ever since. And now it has been given to the Freelancers as a sign of lancer fellowship.

The rarest mineral current known, corium is only found within the heart of a titan. The Sentinels of Fort Tarsis presented their piece of the throne to the Freelancers, as a sign of good faith and hope for renewed lancer cooperation in the future.

Freelancers (1)
See Cortex Entry: Freelancers (1) for More Details

Independent lancers who chose to follow General Tarsis and the Path of Valor. They silence cataclysms and aid those in need beyond the safety of the walls. Freelancers act without direct orders from any central organization. Though there is no official code, the modern perception of Freelancer values is attributed to Dalathie's The Freelancers Three.
Valor to serve the people, regardless of their station.
Courage to bring silence when the Anthem sing.
Faith to keep my word and the word of my brethren.
Trust that the free answer when called.
Strong Alone, Stronger Together.

As explorers and researchers, we often find ourselves requiring a Freelancer's sure hand to protect us from the wild world and, occasionally, ourselves. They give their lives for us, and yet we do not often acknowledge the value they bring beyond their martial skills. Freelancers are a special kind of historian. They can often tell you what's over the next hill, what happened there, and with some reluctance, who may rest there still.
— Arcanist Fell Watuk

Freelancers (3)

The problem with Freelancers is their disorganization. How can they protect us from threats when their coordination is based on individuality? Their refusal to follow a leader has become an issue since the Heart of Rage incident. It is my opinion that the Freelancers should join the Sentinels as a protective unit, or get out of their way.

The public's confidence in Freelancers was shaken after the Freemark disaster and the failure to silence the Heart of Rage. Many looked to the Sentinels, an organization that not only escaped blame for Freemark's destruction, but grew in esteem since then. The Sentinels tried to maintain order both within and outside the Fort Tarsis walls, an impossible job that would lead to additional tragedy, despite their great courage.

"Cutter Drayden was stranded on a plateau. He waved at some Freelancers who flew by in their stupid javelins, but they ignored him. Just like they always did. Once, when he tried to become a Freelancer, they said he was too angry and would get someone hurt."
Hmm. This is better:
"Cutter Drayden was a lone wolven who lived on the edge. His inner demons were the fuel that compelled him to greatness. Triumphant, he stood atop a rugged plateau where even Freelancers feared to tread. But not Drayden. He ignored the pain that came with victory. This all-purpose communication device allows lancers to stay in contact with each other through shortwave radio, as well as maintain mental contact with cyphers. Cyphers can also act as a conduit for additional parties to observe and comment on lancer activities. Early experiments between Corvus and the Satomi dabbled in sensory linking between all parties. However, this overloaded lancers who needed to focus their mental energies on piloting their javelins. Additional technology to limit what information lancers receive has since been developed. Socially, it is considered rude to wear links in certain situations, and the Antium Bard's Union has banned links at all performances.

I think about you every day. I miss you. I've seen so many exciting things. I understand why you didn't come with me, but I still wish that you did.
Highlights… we passed a Scar village. I ate manticor on a dare. I visited the Fort Tarsis library. There's a kind of fountain nearby. I sat there and read about a million words. But wherever I go, I make sure to visit the Freelancer enclave. I want so badly to pilot a javelin like my aunt. I'm determined to impress Freelancer Yarrow.
Here's a joke... how many Scars does it take to kill a Titan? Fifty. Because, it's a glitching Titan!.
That's terrible, but I hope you're laughing anyway.
I miss your laugh.

Antium News [Archives].
— Tragic news of yet another outlaw attack on a passenger strider between Antium and Fortuo. The ruthless gang was tipped off that smugglers had stuffed a hoard of major crystals under the floorboards. Although the thieves only wanted the crystals, Freelancers discovered most of the passengers dead in a gruesome scene. The outlaws spared only the children, who were taken to an farm near Pontiex.
— Congratulations to Freelancer Thetes, who celebrated his birthday by winning the Venter Race in his custom Interceptor. Since no one admits to letting the veteran win, we must assume his victory was fair and square.
— Icetide is expected to begin in the next month or two. Harvest missions will be run out of the Freemark enclave this year. Freelancers from all areas are welcome to join.

Recent stability in local trade routes—which some credit to efforts and alliances made by the Freelancers—has brought a small influx of prosperity to Fort Tarsis. Some say there has been an influx in Regulators as well, but these claims are as yet unfounded.
Sentinel Vule has issued a statement reminding the populace that, while positive developments should be celebrated, it's tempting to ignore exploited loopholes during such times. He continued that no matter how "fun or frivolous," it's the people's responsibility to ensure newly acquired items have arrived to the fort through legitimate means.

FROM: The Street Prophet
Truth coming at you. So why do I spout that stuff in the streets, you ask? Simple. To turn people off from the Anthem. Tune it out. Make them afraid of it, shake them loose from worshipping it. Not for the reasons I'm screaming about out there, but because the reasons I'm telling you here. The Anthem is all fabricated by spies. I don't want good people falling under their spell.
Here's the hard truth I've recently uncovered our very own Corvus might be the spy agency behind all this. I thought it was some foreign op. Nope. I have it on good authority Corvus has a Freelancer out there looking for a special, all-powerful relic. What did I tell you last issue? That the wrong hands could use the myth of the Anthem, Shapers, and relics to wield power. I just never imagined those wrong hands would be our hands, the ones supposedly protecting us.
More truth to follow...

Midderon and the Path of Valor (2)

It's time to tell you how the Freelancers began.
Midderon was raised by the Legion of Dawn. He witnessed Tarsis testing the first javelin. He was at the General's side when the Fortress was built, earned his own javelin, and eventually fought beside her. Of those that stood with Tarsis and held back the urgoth at Antium Pass, only Midderon survived. In grief, the Legion tore itself in two. Half went with Magna Stral. Half with Arden Vassa. And one Legionnaire who went with no one.
Midderon remained at the Fortress of Dawn, even though the gates were sealed and the lancers gone for good. Alone in the courtyard, Midderon heard a distant roar. It was a sound he remembered, for it haunted his dreams. The roar of the chimera Cindermaw. The monster that stalked him long ago. It had vanished for more than a decade, but returned upon the General's death.
Though Midderon stood no chance alone, he saw that the village of Anshar lay helpless in the creature's path. He found the chimera's trail and followed it—not to the monster, but to its lair. If he silenced the relic that created it, Cindermaw would be defeated. Midderon found the relic, though the monster lurked nearby. Midderon remembered his childhood of laying false trails. He woke the chimera and it chased his false tracks while he slipped past, silenced the relic, and defeated the beast that stalked him long ago.
Cindermaw fell. In that moment, Midderon knew his calling was to walk the Path of Valor, even if he walked it alone.

In an early conflict with the Dominion, an eager young Freelancer continually ran forward, let off a shot, and then retreated hastily back to his own line. His curious actions confused the Dominion troops and helped win the day. His weapon of choice was a forerunner of this shotgun; he gave it a curious nickname. Scar Luminary
See Cortex Entry: Scar Luminary for More Details

A Scar Luminary is a particularly long-lived Escari that uses its intelligence and experience to lead a Scar swarm. In the past Luminaries have been ambitious, strategic, and brutal.
Most Luminaries encountered by Freelancers have attempted to mimic javelins by fusing weaponry to their bodies through exposure to Shaper relics. Junkhead mounted numerous guns and cannons on his head. Gearfoot fused strider legs to his lower half and stomped the Freelancers trying to stop him from passing through the Antium Lock. For this reason alone the Scar population must be kept in check. If more scars become Luminaries, the result would be unspeakable.

Scars (1)
See Cortex Entry: Scars (1) for More Details

A colonial swarm of insects that mimics the dominant life-form in an area. Scars first appeared from a Cataclysm in 413 L.V. At the time, Freelancers defeated a large, vicious creature none of them recognized. Later, unknown to Freelancers, the Scars regrouped and changed their mimicry to appear human.
As one of the first eyewitnesses stated: “This wasn’t just four or five insects. This was thousands! An entire colony working together to make arms and legs… to make heads and… eyes. They became people!”
Scars then hijacked striders, cobbled together technology from scrap, and searched for Shaper relics. Inventive scavengers, they left nothing behind. As Arcanist researcher Hanni Blythe stated, “Empathy towards Scars is foolhardy, for their primary concern isn’t domination or survival, but mindless, thoughtless consumption. They’re a scourge, a plague upon the world.”

Sentinel Bonfire
See Cortex Entry: Sentinel Bonfire for More Details

"Humanity is a fire in a world of darkness."
A bonfire represents security, home and hearth. History documents Sentinels using bonfires to signal an enemy's approach, to warn of a catastrophic Shaper event, or to provide a clear destination for weary travelers. The fires brought order to chaos and created a place of sanctuary in a dangerous world.
Today, bonfires have become a monument to humanity's rightful place in the world. Sentinels continue their tradition by lighting seasonal bonfires in places of great danger; the flames are zealously guarded by Sentinels and Freelancers alike as an act of human defiance and power. Like banners and sacred places, the fires symbolize humanity's strength and unity to those who intend us harm.

The Cypher Who Wanted To Fly
See Cortex Entry: The Cypher Who Wanted To Fly for More Details

Of course there have been cyphers who wanted to be lancers. Take the old story of the cypher who wanted to fly. In Satomi, this is not just a folk tale, but a lesson to be heeded. The story goes as follows:
Benwick Xan, a brilliant cypher in his day, thought he could pilot a javelin whilst ignoring his own heightened awareness. Although his initial tests were encouraging, things were not so simple in the face of genuine danger. He hired a Freelancer to escort him into the wild; they hadn't gone three steps when they were attacked by skorpions. In the heat of battle, Benwick could not focus. He found when one of the beasts attacked, his attention was split: sensing a rise in Shaper energy to the East, picking up Arcanist distress signals, noting the rise in humidity due to recent rain, and dozens of other things that did not help at this moment. He tried to fly, but accidentally fired his cannon. He tried to fire his cannon, but instead punched a nearby rock. He had no control. Tragically, it was he and not the skorpions who killed his escort.
You see, lancer and javelin are connected to the Anthem via gateway… but it's a single connection. Slim and direct. We cyphers are already connected to the Anthem, and for us, the gateway is not direct but… engulfing. Javelins cannot possibly channel our every impulse, because our impulses are too many, too vast. The result is a disaster.
There are whispers, of course, of those in the north experimenting with the "creation" of cypher-pilots, but I have yet to see proof of whether they exist or how. 'Tis a rumor and a wish, not a reality.

Waterfalls should be treated with caution. For lancers, however, waterfalls can be very useful. Flying through a waterfall will cool a javelin's boosters and elongate flight time. This helps Freelancers, Sentinels, and other lancers travel through the perilous wilderness and reach people in need much quicker.

Jak,
Has anybody asked Yarrow about the sky thing? I mean, he has to know, right? A Freelancer as old as him, he's seen a zillion cataclysms and weird Shaper things by now.
It's creeping me out. If there's a way to silence or get rid of... whatever that is, I want in. Or at least I want to hear about it afterward. In the enclave. Indoors. With no view of the sky

Wyvern Blitz (Weapon)
See Cortex Entry: Wyvern Blitz (Weapon) for More Details

Originally employed by hunters, the Wyvern Blitz has also proven itself to be useful in times of conflict. Many years ago, a small hunting party of Freelancers was attacked by a massive pyre of wyverns. Only through a combination of strategic hovering and expert sharpshooting were they able to escape with their lives. This rifle was their only weapon.
