Sentinel Larsen, this means you. See below.
—Vule
To: Commander Vule
Several members of my team have voiced concerns about some Sentinels' javelins. To put it bluntly, they don't smell very good. Cyphers often receive sense impressions from the lancers with whom they're linked. This can include impressions of smell in sensitive individuals.
No fewer than three fort cyphers have reported becoming distracted by the stench. You can see how this might become a problem.
Might I ask for your cooperation in making sure your lancers pay attention to the padding within their javelins when they perform routine maintenance? The Sentinel's job is tiring, sweaty, and dangerous. I would prefer not to expose my people, or yours, to more risk than necessary.

Safety Meeting Tonight.
We are mounting a campaign against litter and lane blockage in Fort Tarsis.
If you believe this Fort could be tidier and more ergonomically efficient, then please join us in the courtyard this evening.
Many craftspeople are eschewing common sense and the institution of fines may be necessary in order to gain full safety compliance from all in the Fort.
Please join us in our campaign to make this Fort more efficient, safe, and friendly.

A Strange Drawing
See Cortex Entry: A Strange Drawing for More Details

I was staying in Fort Tarsis when I found something scrawled on a wall: a drawing of a ground-nut with legs and arms, wearing a visor made of two circles of darkened glass. My hosts explained that this figure is a legend the children of the fort created after a surplus harvest of nuts a few years ago. In their stories, this talking nut looks out for young people on adventures, appearing to them in their darkest hours to encourage them with advice and cooperation.
It was strangely sweet, but left me with the feeling that the children of Tarsis could do with some new books or toys.

Blirpbit
See Cortex Entry: Blirpbit for More Details

Unknown Creature Bst189567307, recently observed in a Fort Tarsis shop, has finally been identified as a Blirpbit. Regardless of his keeper's outrageous claims, this beast (yes, beast!) is ancient, revered, and very rare.
Old texts also describe it as "venomous and deadly". When the Blirpbit feels threatened, it is able to unhinge its jaw and envelop its assailant's face; unable to breathe, the attacker slowly suffocates under noxious fumes that were noted as "smelling like a sickly-sweet, feces-encrusted, Stinkhand pie" (if such a thing existed)
In recent history, Birpbits were hunted almost to extinction. While their ability to annoy and enrage would be reason enough to see them gone, their venom was thought to cure the painful rash brought on by javelin chafing.

Back in Fort Tarsis, Freelancers Henley and Braxton carefully filed their incident reports to Sentinel command, to properly inform the fort about the acid Titan they encountered earlier, and this greatly improved morale in the fort because Freelancers and Sentinels should cooperate instead of perpetuating petty lancer rivalries. Also, Bianca fell down a well.

If sticking around for a day trip, check out the underground passage beneath the fort, once said to be home to the famous Ezurite Anzu, and then jet off for visit to the Haven, Honor Valley Dam, or the awe inspiring Ring Gate. Fort Tarsis' walls are thick, its lancers are loyal, and the people are strong. But we're far from invulnerable. Danger comes in stranger forms every year… Like that Cataclysm that brought lavender snow. Lavender snow! Everyone thought it was beautiful until it started to burn. So we set up fire watches and doubled patrols to stop the damage. And I thought I'd seen everything.

"The monstrous Scar war machines smashed the white walls of Fort Tarsis for ten days and ten nights. With every attack, the walls shook, but never fell. Atop those same walls, the Sentinels' deafening gunfire barrage never ceased. Beyond the wall, Freelancers harassed and diverted the vast swarm, often disappearing into their uncountable numbers like stones dropping into water, only to reemerge from the canopy battered—but victorious."

Ha Ha! Danger!
See Cortex Entry: Ha Ha! Danger! for More Details

I didn't really consider how hard it would be to write a book in the middle of the jungle. The humidity is curling all my pages, and swatting away mosquitoes interrupts every other sentence. But here goes... I'm writing what I know (with some embellishments of course).
"Keeble Carnswile ran out of breath trying to climb the stupid sheer rock wall that took him all day to reach, only to discover it went even higher into the clouds. It was getting dark, and he was scared s***less."
Wait, scratch that.
"Cutter Drayden bounded across the ridge, cresting a hill where he espied a waterfall in the gloom. Dusk had settled across the jungle, but he had nothing to fear in the night—the night feared him.”
Hell, yes. And to think that guy in Fort Tarsis who sells cheap baskets told me I was a hack writer.

Honor Valley Dam
See Cortex Entry: Honor Valley Dam for More Details

In 380, Arcanist Phredies Par came to Fort Tarsis with the daring idea of creating farmland in Honor Valley by diverting some of the water system. With approval from Antium, Par and a team of engineers and architects set forth to build the dam, completing it in 384. Farmers, Arcanists and Sentinels joined forces to plant and maintain the farmland, yielding more crop than most city terraces.

I Laugh at Danger, but...
See Cortex Entry: I Laugh at Danger, but... for More Details

Last chapter of my book:
"Cutter Drayden was exhausted. At best, he only had a day before he died of a nasty rash. His old life selling trinkets in Fort Tarsis didn't seem so bad now. His book hadn't really worked out, and it was best just to bury it where no one would find it. If he hurried, he could be home before the loud scary things ate him."
That won't work; this is better:
"Cutter Drayden had stared into the maw—the worst the world could throw at him—and the world had blinked. He had nothing left to prove. His courage was stronger than steel. Having conquered the wilds of Bastion, he could now retire in Antium and live the life of the idle rich. Legions of fawning admirers would ensure the legend of Cutter Drayden eclipsed even that of General Tarsis."
Well, back to selling trinkets.

I'm Still Laughing at Danger!
See Cortex Entry: I'm Still Laughing at Danger! for More Details

Hmm. Trying to write this novel is an ordeal. The humidity is so bad, my ink runs. Anyway, here's more write-what-you-know:
"Cutter Drayden was starving. He thought hunting would be easy, but anything worth eating tried to eat you first. So now he was digging for grubs, but some of them made his lips numb when he chewed on them."
Revised:
"Cutter Drayden was a survivor. He lived off the land. Master of the wilds, he knew the jungle provided for those with senses keen enough to unravel its secrets. What others dismissed as just a mere insect, Drayden knew was a storehouse of vital life-sustaining energy and protein. Others could starve—Drayden would soar."
Hell, yes. SOAR. I'm never going back to my job selling pottery in Fort Tarsis.

I'm on the Floor with Hilarity and Laughing at Danger!
See Cortex Entry: I'm on the Floor with Hilarity and Laughing at Danger! for More Details

They say you have to write all the time, no matter what:
"Cutter Drayden was stranded on a plateau. He waved at some Freelancers who flew by in their stupid javelins, but they ignored him. Just like they always did. Once, when he tried to become a Freelancer, they said he was too angry and would get someone hurt."
Hmm. This is better:
"Cutter Drayden was a lone wolven who lived on the edge. His inner demons were the fuel that compelled him to greatness. Triumphant, he stood atop a rugged plateau where even Freelancers feared to tread. But not Drayden. He ignored the pain that came with victory. Embraced the solitude that cursed all great men ahead of their time. He reveled in it."
REVELED. Wait until everyone back in Fort Tarsis sees how rich and famous this book makes me.

An offensive and hideous new visitor to Bastion was recently spotted in Fort Tarsis, perched in an Arcanist's shop with malice gleaming behind its dead eyes. Waterfalls

There are dozens of waterfalls in Bastion, and while they are beautiful, they can also be deadly. Getting caught in the undertow of a waterfall without a javelin can result in drowning. During the great expansion of Fort Tarsis, going over local waterfalls in a barrel resulted in many deaths, leading to the banning of all waterfall recreation. Waterfalls should be treated with caution. For lancers, however, waterfalls can be very useful. Flying through a waterfall will cool a javelin's boosters and elongate flight time. This helps Freelancers, Sentinels, and other lancers travel through the perilous wilderness and reach people in need much quicker.
