Brin has sent her Sentinels outside the walls for a mission, hastily assuming that they could outperform the Freelancers’ relic silencing and combat with Scars. But the patrol hasn’t returned. The Freelancer checks in on her to find out more.

Hints and Suggestions

  • The dialog exchange between the characters will change depending on whether single player or multiplayer mode is played.
  • Remember to perform Feats to obtain XP for increasing Pilot Level and receiving Alliance bonus.
  • Make sure to read the text pop ups that show around the memorials. This can be easily done with the help of a Sniper Rifle. Zoom and aim at the pop up marker that looks like for the best view.
  • Scars infantry can be easily tackled with any combat equipment. Items that do Blast Damage are more useful when they are in hordes.
  • For Scar Scouts and hunters, it is best to focus on stripping their shields with lightning or Shield Breaker damage.
  • Scar Destroyers' seeker mines are filled with acid which can reduce resistance of the javelin armor. They can deploy them infinite times. One mine may be tolerable, but several mines can automatically target a javelin and bring it down. Whenever a Destroyer is seen, defeat it quickly with any equipment.
  • Scar Hunters can do a lot of damage They must be a priority when tackling enemies. Once their shields are stripped, freeze them using ice or render them flightless with fire.
  • Scar Enforcers have armored health. They don’t do much damage. Using armor buster, acid or fire type damage is the best way to deal with them. Same idea is true for turrets, but there is also the advantage that turrets have a blind spot.
  • There are several legendary enemies. So, they will have a much larger health pool and must be dealt with caution.
  • The Ursix’s weak point is on its head. However, if the head is constantly targeted, it’s eyes begin to glow red, and its attacks become more ferocious. Armor Buster, Acid and Fire damages are the best way to take it out.

One of Brin's Sentinel patrols went missing after trying to track down a relic taken by Scars. Head to the Sentinels' last known location and try to find them.

Outcome: You rescued one of Brin's Sentinels, Derian Barr, from Scars. Four others died while silencing a dangerous Shaper relic that was creating ursix. Another Sentinel is still missing.

Quest Chain

This expedition is a part of the Need to Know II Storyline. When the storyline is completed, an appropriate challenge is also completed, which will reward the Freelancer. The following are the related quests in order for this storyline:

Trivia (May Contain Spoilers)

  • This may be the first time Brin has opened up to a non-Sentinel lancer and called them a friend.
  • Some kind of static signal is heard from the beacon before its activation.
  • Brin uses another one of the quirky expressions used in bastion: Grey grabbit’s great paw. This may be an allusion to rabbits’ feet being considered lucky on Earth.
  • There is a text pop up near the second beacon that reads:
    • Still full.
  • This mission makes use of a Hidden Place called The Mandible.
  • This mission has the most Scar Legendary Enemies out of all the missions.
  • This is the only mission, not counting the Up, Up and Away Conjunction where Legendary Scar Destroyers and Scar Scrappers are seen.
  • There is a text pop up on the entrance to The Mandible that reads:
    • Hastily erected. Unclear if it’s to keep something outside or in.
  • The text pop up on the Arcanist equipment inside the Mandible reads:
    • More tools like the ones Scars use to modify relics. Highly sophisticated.
  • Sentinel Barr get the exclusive privilege of being named in a mission objective even though he is a minor character.
  • There is a text pop up in the final chamber after defeating the ursix on the relic that reads:
    • Modified by Scars to create Ursix. Thankfully silenced..
  • It says that the relic is inert, which means the Sentinels somehow silenced it. However, Sentinels are not actually trained to silence them, that’s what Freelancers are there for.
  • Tam could only have silenced the relic after the Freelancer defeated the Ursix. Which means, this Sentinel died while fighting another monster created by the relic, while fighting the Scars. Once the relic was silenced, the monster was pulled back.
  • Sentinel Tam’s abandoned javelin found near the relic is a colossus. This shows that the Sentinels not just use Ranger Mark One javelins, but have access to others as well, but it is just not shown in-game yet.
  • Brin still doesn’t have a debriefing cut scene with the Freelancer even after this mission.

Briefing

Brin is distressed while waiting by her usual post.

  • Sentinel Brin: "Freelancer! You’re back. Good."
  • The Freelancer: "You got something for me?"
  • Sentinel Brin: "Maybe. I mean, yes. Okay, I do. I ordered Sentinels out beyond the fort to investigate unusual Scar activity we’ve been seeing. They didn’t report back."
  • The Freelancer: "Oh."
  • Sentinel Brin: "I made a mistake, and I owe it to them to finish this. Properly. You’ll still get paid, but this isn’t an official Sentinel contract."

Brin pauses for a very short instant with a gasp.

  • Sentinel Brin: "More like… a favor. For… a friend."
  • The Freelancer: "I’ll do whatever I can. Just point me in the right direction."
  • Sentinel Brin: "I Will."

The Freelancer ventures outside the Fort.

Briefing Gallery

In Expedition

The Freelancer comes outside the gates of the fort in Tarsis Falls.

  • Sentinel Brin: "Hi. It’s Brin."
  • The Freelancer: "Hi. Do you know where your Sentinels headed?"
  • Sentinel Brin: "We’re tracing a Shaper relic the Scars had stolen. A big one, far from the Fort. I’ll send you their last coordinates."
  • The Freelancer: "Got it."

Travel to Last Known Location

The Freelancer flies to the last know location in Korox Shallows.

  • The Freelancer: "What were your missing Sentinels' exact orders?"
  • Sentinel Brin: "Track, report, and bring back the Shaper relic taken by the Scars. Who knows what those little pincers are planning to do with it?"

When the Freelancer reaches the point of interest, Scars await them and more spawn through Scar Hives.

  • Sentinel Brin: "This is the last place I heard from them."
  • The Freelancer: "Hang on—Scars!"

Defeat Scars

The Freelancer fights and defeats all the Scar enemies. Several Scars at this point are of Legendary Enemy type. So, the Freelancer combats with caution.

Hives Destroyed

The Freelancer must destroy 3 Scar Hives while dealing with the Scars that come out of them. When all 3 are destroyed,

  • The Freelancer: "The Scar hives are down."
  • Sentinel Brin: "Good riddance."

When all the Scars are defeated,

  • The Freelancer: "That’s the last of them."
  • Sentinel Brin: "Good. Let’s look for signs of the Sentinels."

Search for Signs of Sentinels

The Freelancer scans the area guided by the radar. They find a signal beacon.

  • The Freelancer: "Found a beacon. They made it alive and left a trail. Well-trained."
  • Sentinel Brin: "Thank the grey grabbit’s great paw. Okay… I’ve got their next location!"

Follow Beacon Trail

The Freelancer flies to the next location in Eddian Grove.

  • The Freelancer: "Brin… this is really far from the fort."
  • Sentinel Brin: "I know. Those Scars that took the relic dragged it all the way out there. It’s like they’re trying to hide something from us."

The Freelancer is now amid the Eddian trees looking for any signs of the Sentinels.

  • The Freelancer: "No Scars this time—but no Sentinels, either. Maybe there’s another beacon?"

Search for Next Beacon

The Freelancer flies with their radar’s assist to find the beacon. There is a text pop up near the beacon. The freelancer interacts with the beacon to investigate.

  • The Freelancer: "A second beacon, Brin."
  • Sentinel Brin: "I was hoping for more Sentinel-shaped finds, but I’ll take it. Wait… I know where this is pointing us—an old mine. Abandoned."
  • The Freelancer: "On my way."
  • Sentinel Brin: ""

Locate mine

The Freelancer goes to Blackshore. There is a mine by the name of the Mandible. When the Freelancer is closer to the Mandible,

  • Sentinel Brin: "You’re approaching the mine. Freelancer?"
  • The Freelancer: "Yeah, Brin?"
  • Sentinel Brin: "Just… be careful."

When the Freelancer reaches the mine, Scars have setup a barricade over there.

  • The Freelancer: "I’m at the mine entrance. It looks like a war zone."
  • Sentinel Brin: "The Sentinels must have fought the Scars on their way in."

When the entrance is reached,

  • The Freelancer: "Scars barricaded the mine entrance. Looks recent."
  • Sentinel Brin: "Look for explosives. Scars always have explosives."
  • The Freelancer: "I’m on it."

Get Through Barricade

There is a text pop up by the barricade on the entrance of the Mandible.

Find Explosive to Destroy Barricade

The Freelancer must find an explosive which could be scattered across, to set it up for priming. When the first explosive is found,

  • The Freelancer: "Found a bomb."
  • Sentinel Brin: "What did I tell you? Scars. Take it to the barricade."
  • The Freelancer: "Brin? I’m arming the bomb."
  • Sentinel Brin: " Stay close while it arms. The Scars won’t be happy."

Defend Bomb

The freelancer must stay within the reach of the bomb while dealing with the Scars. Several legendary enemies can show up at this point.

Arming Explosives

Stay in the green Cypher Projected circle while the bomb is arming. Going outside the circle will dwindle the progress and turn the circle orange. Letting enemies inside the circle will make the color go pale. The progress will slow bow, but it won’t stop. When the bomb is primed,

  • The Freelancer: "Bomb’s done arming."
  • Sentinel Brin: "Get some distance!"

The Freelancer has 10 seconds to get out of the range of the armed bomb before it explodes and damages their javelin. The explosion destroys the barricade.

  • The Freelancer: "That did it. Barricade’s down."
  • Sentinel Brin: "Great. Into the mines."

The freelancer can clear out the enemies or simply enter the mine.

The Freelancer can now continue to search for the missing sentinels.

Enter Mine

The Freelancer goes inside the Mandible.

Explore Further

The Freelancer finds familiar artifacts inside the mine. There is a text pop up.

  • The Freelancer: "Arcanist equipment. Want to bet that Shaper relic’s in here, too?"
  • Sentinel Brin: "Likely. And you’re looking for six sentinels."

Inside the mine, the freelancer finds a downed javelin with blood stains all over it.

  • The Freelancer: "Brin. One of your team!"
  • Sentinel Brin: "Barr! Is he okay?"
  • Sentinel Derian Barr: "Fought a lot of Scars… don’t think anyone made it…"
  • Sentinel Brin: "How is he? Can you help him?"

Repair Derian Barr

The Freelancer repairs Barr’s javelin

  • The Freelancer: "Sentinel Barr. Can you stand?"
  • Sentinel Derian Barr: "Yes. (Coughs.) Took some knocks, but…I’m coming with."

Barr starts to move deeper into the mine, so does the Freelancer

  • The Freelancer: "Are you sure?"
  • Sentinel Derian Barr: "Freelancer, I have to see the squad."

Explore Further In

  • Sentinel Brin: "Freelancer. If the other Sentinels are dead… can you collect their signets?"
  • The Freelancer: "Of Course."

Deep inside the mine,

  • The Freelancer: "Scars!"

Signets Collected

The Freelancer must collect 5 signets while dealing with the Scars. Sentinel Barr will assist them. As more Scars start to gate in,

  • The Freelancer: "Got more Scars!"
  • Sentinel Brin: "You know what to do."

When the first signet is collected,

  • The Freelancer: "Sentinel… I found one of your people."
  • Sentinel Derian Barr: "It’s Sentinel Geran"

When a second signet is found

  • The Freelancer: "Bri… I found another one of your Sentinels."
  • Sentinel Brin: "Okay… okay."
  • Sentinel Derian Barr: "Sentinel Aldis"

When the third sentinel’s abandoned javelin is found,

  • Sentinel Derian Barr: "Sentinel Brell. I… dammit."
  • The Freelancer: "I don’t see a signet."
  • Sentinel Derian Barr: "There was a big Scar—their leader. It must have taken it."
  • The Freelancer: "Where is It now?"
  • Sentinel Brin: "You should—wait! There’s a massive Scar heading in your direction!"
  • Sentinel Derian Barr: "Duty calls, Freelancer."

Several Scars begin to gate in.

Defeat Targeted Scar

The Freelance and Sentinel Barr fight the scar swarms

  • Sentinel Derian Barr: "This is for Brell and the squad!"
  • Sentinel Brin: "Barr! Watch your systems."
  • Sentinel Derian Barr: "Acknowledged. "

When the targeted Scar is defeated, it also drops a Key Item that contains the Signet.

  • The Freelancer: "It’s down!"
  • Sentinel Derian Barr: "Finally. (Coughs.)"

Collect Final Signet

The Freelancer collects the Signet.

  • The Freelancer: "Here’s the last signet."
  • Sentinel Brin: "Sentinel Barr? What happened? That relic the Scars took? Went volatile. Squad tried to seal it off."
  • The Freelancer: "Barr? You okay?"
  • Sentinel Derian Barr: "Wound reopened. Have to stop. Find the last Sentinels."
  • The Freelancer: "Will do."

Explore Deeper in Mine

The Freelancer ventures deeper. But the Scars have set up several mines in the ground.

  • Sentinel Brin: "You’ve found two Sentinels so far. The other two could still b ealive."
  • The Freelancer: "I’ll tell you if I see them Brin."

Deeper in the mine is a monster that the Freelancer hadn’t expected to see.

  • Sentinel Brin: "What? Is that an ursix? It’s huge!"

Defeat Ursix

The Freelancer fights the monstrous Ursix.

  • Sentinel Brin: "How’s that ursix still standing?"
  • The Freelancer: "It’s a tough one."
  • Sentinel Brin: "Keep going Freelancer, you’re whittling that ursix down!"
  • The Freelancer: "I really hope so!"

The Freelancer finally defeats the ursix.

  • The Freelancer: "That’s it. Huge ursix down."
  • Sentinel Brin: "Phew. Good going. Now that you’ve got breathing room, any signs of the Sentinels?"

Search for Other Sentinels

The Freelancer goes even further inside the mine to look for the Sentinels. There are damaged javelins, including those of Scars near an inert relic. There is also a text pop up on it. The Freelancer looks for the remaining signets with the help of their radar and collects it.

  • The Freelancer: "Brin. I found the fifth Sentinel."
  • Sentinel Brin: "Sentinel Tam."
  • The Freelancer: "This Shaper relic made the ursix. Tam must have died silencing it. If your Sentinels hadn’t shut it down, things would be way worse."
  • Sentinel Brin: "True. That’s true. It’s… done. You do good work."
  • The Freelancer: "I’m sorry I couldn’t find your last Sentinel. He might have made it out."
  • Sentinel Brin: "Thanks to you, we saved Derian. And the others can be at peace. I have arrangements to make. And a missing Sentinel to track down."
  • The Freelancer: "Take care, Brin."

Post Expedition

The Freelancer returns to the fort with Sentinel Barr.

Notes and Remarks

  • This expedition has a conversational cut scene during briefing.
  • This expedition has no conversational de-briefing post mission.
  • The dialogs mentioned in the script can vary across different play-throughs and different repetition of the game modes. The dialog will be taken from a pool that get rotated in-game. The script mentioned here is from one such instance only.
