After Owen's betrayal, and him stealing the Javelin of Dawn, the hope of silencing the Heart of Rage was lost to the Freelancer. But, Haluk revealed that it was still possible to end the cataclysm if they constructed the right Seals and equip it on the Freelancer’s own javelin.
The Freelancer must now find ways to gather materials for the construction of these key items.
Note: Select a section by clicking on one of the tabs.
This mission has a choice between two storylines. Completing at least one is necessary, but completing both will require the Freelancer to harvest fewer resources.
Required Materials with Assisting either Dax or Matthias
Sometimes, even when a corium is collected, the game doesn’t register it as being collected. In such a case, there are additional ways of defeating Escari or Titans to get the corium. A list of such expeditions can be found here.
The Dawn Shield can only be crafted once. This is enough for all 4 javelins.
It is possible to simply salvage various types of Combat Equipment to collect the aforementioned number of resources, instead of simply harvesting them.
In subsequent playthroughts or while playing with a second pilot, if the aforementioned Crafting Resources are already available (since they are shared between pilots), there is no need for salvage or harvesting. However, 3 Corium crystals must be gathered again.
Corium simply looks like a Key Item when an enemy drops it. It looks like a green crystals in the Enclave’s display.

Expedition Navigation
These are the locations where the Freelancer begins the expedition, has to perform tasks to advance, and conclude the expedition.
Faye has a plan to recreate the Dawn Shield from the javelin of General Tarsis. Haluk is convinced he can build it, but he needs materials. Lots of materials. To collect them, defeat Escari, maybe hunt a few titans, check with Matthias, and watch for a new contact, Lady Adaxia Dell.
Outcome: You found all the materials. Now the only question is... does the shield work?
This expedition is a part of the Legend of the Heart of Rage Storyline. When the storyline is completed, an appropriate challenge is also completed, which will reward the Freelancer. The following are the related quests in order for this storyline:
Towards the end of the previous mission, Faye mentions that there is Library in the Fortress of Dawn where she got the blueprints to craft the relevant seals. But nowhere is it ever mentioned that they are constructing an entire shield, unless journal entries or the briefing entries are read.
There are two versions of blueprints, both of which require 3 corium crystals. If either Dax or Matthias is helped, the additional crafting materials required are only 10% of what was required otherwise. Which means, the additional materials are actually provided by the Arcanists and Sentinels in this case, but off-screen.
As the Freelancer collects more resources, there are heaps of materials beside Haluk’s workbench in the Fort Tarsis Freelancer Enclave.
Haluk can’t use his Javelin because he has lost confidence since his attempt to Silence the Heart of Rage. He will, however, be able to equip it around the time of Icetide of 468 LV, as mentioned in Songs of Icetide short story.
The Dawn Shield is named as Shield of Dawn in many cortex entries and when crafting in the Forge.
The crafting entry for Dawn Shield is: This shield enables a javelin to enter the Heart of Rage.
The Dawn Shield is equipped on different parts on each of the Freelancer's javelin.
The Dawn shield adds a 13th slot for Combat EquipmentLoadouts. However, it doesn’t do much, since, currently, its only purpose is progressing missions. There are no buffs or de-buffs associated with it.
The Dawn Shield got a new story-specific purpose during Echoes of Reality. A new device was attached to it so that the freelancer could easily gate-in or out of its storm cloud.
Below is the Script and Walkthrough for Crafting the Dawn Shield (Mission):
Briefing
The Freelancer must meet with Haluk in the Enclave to find out what is required to construct the necessary seals.
Find out What the Project Needs
The Freelancer visits Haluk.
Talk to Haluk
Haluk is waiting by his javelin in the enclave.
Freelancer: "We’re really gonna build our own Javelin of Dawn? You think we can pull this off?"
Haluk: "What’d I say about looking too far ahead? Focus on the here and now. Right now we need materials and information. That means we need connections."
Freelancer: "Corvus gave me this job. Can’t they help us out?"
Haluk: "When was the last time a government agency got anything done fast?"
Freelancer: "Point taken. So… connections. Who do we need?"
Haluk: "Arcanists are the obvious ones. Weird and impossible are their specialties."
Freelancer: "I already have an Arcanist contact: Matthias Sumner. I’ll see what he can do for us."
Haluk: "Good! Next is the Sentinels. They’ve got javelins, parts, and contacts in Antium. Fortunately, there’s a Sentinel Dax who’s been looking for you. She’s supposed to be a big wig of some sort. Might be just what we need."
Freelancer: "Huh. What’s an important Sentinel want with me?"
Haluk: "Worth finding out, right? Meanwhile, there’s plenty of other stuff you can find for the shield."
Freelancer: "What do we need?"
Haluk: "We need materials. And they’re not easy to get. Faye gave me a list. We need some kind of metal that is only found inside the heart of a titan."
Freelancer: "I have to hunt down a titan? You weren’t kidding about the “not easy” part."
Haluk: "Scars are always scavenging around Shaper ruins. They might have found our metal too."
Freelancer: "Your run-of-the-mill Scar won’t have a titan heart stashed away."
Haluk: "Escari might. Maybe a Luminary, if you can find one. Dunno if that’s worse than titan-hunting, really."
Freelancer: "Great. So I’ll either go hunt a titan, or just ask a Luminary very politely for it. No problem."
Haluk: "Hey. We got this. Just do one thing at a time, yeah?"
The Freelancer prepares to gather resources and allies.

In Expedition
Get Materials for the Dawn Shield
It is possible to complete this mission by meeting Sentinel Dax or Assisting Arcanist Matthias. Any one is enough. But it will require more materials to craft the shield.
However, completing the missions given by both will make it all the more easy to craft the Dawn Shield.
Get Corium by Assisting Matthias or Dax
The fReelancer can meet Dax or Matthias in any order.
Meet Dax
If the Freelancer wants to Meet with Dax, she is at the Bar
The Freelancer can check the progress on the Dawn Shield between any of their missions or contracts or any expedition. The Freelancer can also visit Haluk in the enclave to actually see the progress.
Either completion of one of the storylines or collection of 3 corium crystals is needed to continue further at this point.
Talk to Faye
Faye is with Haluk who is trying to establish a link to his javelin in the enclave.
Haluk: "(Grunts.) Gateway’s not opening. Check the connection to the crown."
Faye: "Everything is clear."
Haluk: "It’s got to be a glitch in the core. You see anything?"
Faye: "It looks fine."
Haluk: "No, no—you got to hit it a couple of times."
Faye is visibly annoyed.
Faye: "You think I can literally smack sense into it?"
Haluk: "Trust me. It’s an old Freelancer technique."
Faye: "Haluk—"
Freelancer: "I’ve got this."
The Freelancer pounds Haluk’s javelin once using their fist
Haluk: "(Grunts painfully.)"
Freelancer: "Haluk? How’s that connection now?"
Haluk: "(Grunts.) Nothing! (Grunts.) Damnit."
Haluk gets out of the javelin and sits down.
Haluk: "Nothing. I can’t run it."
Freelancer: "So take a look at the crown. Something must still be busted."
Haluk: "I’ve been over this a thousand times! I swear it does this to spite me!"
Haluk hits his javelin using his cane. Faye sits beside Haluk.
Faye: "Haluk, maybe it’s not the javelin."
Haluk: "This hunk of junk is putting our whole plan in danger! We’re gonna have to delay the mission until I get it working."
Haluk gets up and walks away using his cane towards his toolbox beside the javelin.
Freelancer: "I can find other lancers to come with us—don’t worry."
Haluk: "How many Freelancers went into that storm with us? You need everyone you can backing you up in there."
Faye: "Haluk."
Haluk brings his toolbox to work on his javelin.
Haluk: "I’ll either get this damned thing to run, or I’ll melt it down and make a really big paperweight."
Faye becomes angry and runs away from Haluk, the Freelancer stops her by grabbing her shoulder.
Faye: "(Exhales.) Haluk."
The Freelancer understands from Faye’s reaction that this wasn’t the first time.
Freelancer: "How long has he been doing this?"
Faye retorts angrily.
Faye: "Daily, at first. Then once a month. It’s been half a year since his last try."
Freelancer: "That long? It… isn’t his javelin, is it?"
Faye: "No. sometimes he can almost control it. Sometimes… nothing at all. It’s been a hard wait."
Freelancer: "A hard wait for what?"
Faye: "Twenty-three. "
Freelancer: "What?"
Faye: "That’s how many Freelancers went into the Heart of Rage that final time. Twenty lancers. And three Cyphers who went catatonic by the Anthem. No one else wanted to try again after that. Not that I blame them. No one but me and Haluk. (Frustrated Huff.) He used to be the best. You were there. You were there. You remember. I remember. Every single thing we lost."
Faye begins to whisper a secret to the Freelancer.
Faye: "I heard it. For just one moment in the storm, I heard the Anthem. For one moment, I understood… everything. Now every moment of every day since, I’ve heard whispers…calling me back. Pulling on me like a thread unravelling."
The Freelancer tries to comfort Faye, who shudders and steps back.
Freelancer: "Faye…"
Faye: "I’m glad you’re here. I’ll leave you with him."
Faye looks at Haluk before walking towards the amplifier room.
Get Corium from Titans or Escari from Expeditions
The Freelancer must find enemies that drop Corium to continue.
Corium Collected
If the Freelancer decides to venture into Freeplay and look for the materials there instead, they can do so too. However, it is possible to get all the corium by completing the Triple Threat quest line. Other such quests can be found here.
Post Expedition
Once all the materials are gathered, the Freelancer must head to the Fort Tarsis Forge.
Use the Forge to Craft the Dawn Shield
The Freelancer enters the forge.
Build and Equip the Dawn Shield
The Freelancer crafts the Dawn Shield. The slot is clearly shown on all their javelins.
Notes and Remarks
Best to do both storylines to keep the story more immersive.
Materials can be harvested in freeplay or during any other expeditions.
Doing Convergence or Shaper Disturbance expeditions will directly give 3 corium crystals, since there are always 3 titans encountered while doing them.
The dialogs in this expedition will always remain the same as mentioned in this script. However, certain conversations may be skipped if actions are performed quickly, or additional conversations will show up if there is a delay.
Note: The Expedition Maps feature is still a Work in Progress. Sometimes, a refreshing/reloading of this page may be required to zoom-in or zoom-out completely.
