After learning from Aruna Kaule about Reality decay and its adverse effects, the Freelancer is convinced that the three Matthiases will decay out of existence if nothing was done. And, Sumner went away even before Aruna was rescued.

The Freelancer must immediately go to speak with them in their Lab.

Hints and Suggestions

  • The dialog exchange between the characters will change depending on whether single player or multiplayer mode is played.
  • Remember to perform Feats to obtain XP for increasing Pilot Level and receiving Alliance bonus.
  • Make sure to read the text pop ups that show up with the icon . This can be easily done with the help of Sniper Rifles, by zooming in near the icon.
  • Scars in large numbers can be a nuisance. Using Combat Equipment that do Blast Damage will be beneficial during this mission.
  • Use Acid, Armor Buster, or Fire type damage to tackle Scar Enforcers.
  • Deplete enemy shields using Shield Breaker, Lightning or Ice type damage.
  • It is also recommended that the explosives scattered across the map during combat be used when in need.
  • Defeat elementals by staying afar from them, since they can come closer and explode themselves, inducing status effects on a javelin.
  • To fight the titans, focus on their glowing weak points, which can be targeted to do more damage. Other parts of the Titan take less damage. It is preferable to use Acid or Armor Buster damage dealing combat equipment.
  • In multiple playthroughs, use crafting to make tougher Combat Equipment to fight enemies.

The Cortex Entry shows the description and the outcome of the expedition.

Check Cortex Entry: Convergence for More Information

The split caused by the Manifold has put the trio of Matthiases in a precarious state of instability. If a solution is not found, they will go through a process of reality decay, resulting in their destruction.

Outcome: Sumner and the Manifold were located and brought back to Fort Tarsis safely. Now the Matthiases have to find a solution to the reality decay.

Quest Chain

This expedition is a part of the Triple Threat Storyline. When the storyline is completed, an appropriate challenge is also completed, which will reward the Freelancer. The following are the related quests in order for this storyline:

  1. Triple Threat
  2. Inverse Functions
  3. Convergence

Trivia (May Contain Spoilers)

  • The Freelancer can find 4 titans in this mission to collect corium.
  • This mission makes use of a Hidden Place called The Necropolis.
  • Unlike The Well, The Necropolis is not a Shaper ruin, but an Anzu ruin. So Erryl’s idea might have been to take it to a non-shaper site.
  • The Three Matthiases:
    • Sumner is the least like the “Original Matthias” because of his aggression.
    • Although Erryl is the one who remains standing on the machinery through which the game does a good job of making us believe that he is the “Original Matthias.”
    • But it is actually Matti who has the most qualities of the “Original Matthias,” except for his additional gossipy comments about Vule and Cardea after the latter is rescued in Vanishing Act.
  • Matti: "Lady Cardea and Commander Vule, huh? The gossip's everywhere. Fort Tarsis' power couple."
  • Matti: "That Vule. There's always something about a man in uniform, isn't there?"
    • Also, all contracts given to the Freelancer are by Matti, after this mission.

Below is the Script and Walkthrough for Convergence (Mission):

Briefing

The Freelancer enters the lab to find only Matti and Erryl.

Alert the Matthiases to the Danger They’re In

The Freelancer enters the Matthias Lab.

Talk to Matti

The lab is quite dark.

  • Matti: "You're back! That is you, isn't it? I can't quite focus my...eyeballs?"
  • The Freelancer: "Where's Sumner? And where is the Manifold?"
  • Erryl: "He was impatient. He wanted to pursue his own theory."
  • Matti: "He took it. And pushed me. Not hard. But it hurt my feelings."
  • Erryl: "What did Aruna say?"
  • The Freelancer: "The Dominion soldiers were affected by some kind of reality decay as a result of their divide."
  • Erryl: "Reality shifting in unintended ways. As a result, they were..."
  • Matti: "Wobbly. Jelly that didn't quite set."
  • Matti: "Oh. That explains why I'm feeling oddly...porous."
  • Matti: "It's...ah...it's not a great feeling. And none of my limbs work right."
  • The Freelancer: "We need Sumner back."
  • Erryl: "And the Manifold. The generator of the effect must be part of the solution."
  • The Freelancer: "Do you know where he went?"
  • Erryl: "He talked about needing a drink. Maybe...the bar?"
  • The Freelancer: "It's a start. How long do I have?"
  • Matti: "I smell burnt toast."
  • Erryl: "Not long. Please hurry."

Locate Sumner and the Manifold

The Freelancer asks around for Sumner inside the Fort first.

Find Sumner at the Bar

The Freelancer goes to the Bar and finds Aruna.

  • The Freelancer: "I don't see Sumner anywhere. But there's Aruna."
  • Faye: "Maybe she's seen him. You should ask."
  • Aruna Kaule: "Ah, Freelancer. Let me guess. Looking for Matthias?"
  • The Freelancer: "Yes, one of them."
  • Aruna Kaule: "He wanted a drink, but wasn't allowed in. He's been banned from the premises for months."
  • The Freelancer: "Great. So he's gone now."
  • Aruna Kaule: "I tried to talk to him about the samples you found, but he didn't seem interested. He was always easily distracted, but never...rude. It was odd."
  • The Freelancer: "It's...complicated. That one—Sumner—appears to be the abrasive side of Matthias."
  • Aruna Kaule: "We should find him. I don't know how quickly the reality decay could set in."
  • The Freelancer: "Got it."

Search for Sumner

  • The Freelancer: "What now? I don't see Sumner anywhere."
  • Faye: "He might still have his link on him."
  • The Freelancer: "Connect us."
  • Faye: "I can sense the link, but I can't seem to make the connection. But I can track him. Got him! He's by the Forge!"

Find Sumner at Forge

The Freelancer goes to the Fort Tarsis Forge.

  • The Freelancer: "You said Sumner was here. I don't see him."
  • Faye: "No? Hmm. Let me check the Forge records."
  • Faye: "Ah...looks like he took a javelin. Can he do that? Can he even operate one?"
  • The Freelancer: "Not well, I imagine."
  • Faye: "He has likely left the fort by now. You should go after him when you can. In case of trouble."

Launch Expedition

The Freelancer launches an expedition to follow Sumner.

Briefing Gallery

In Expedition

The Freelancer comes out of the strider at Tarsis Falls.

Track Down Sumner and the Manifold

The Freelancer flies around in their javelin towards the Bowl

Track Sumner

  • Faye: "I’m tracking Sumner’s position. Do you see it?"
  • The Freelancer: "Yes! going after him!"

The Freelancer flies to the next location

  • Erryl: "Have you found Sumner yet?"
  • The Freelancer: "He left the Fort. I’m trying to get to him."
  • Erryl: "Hurry. Matti’s lost the ability to perceive time and space normally."
  • The Freelancer: "What?"
  • Erryl: "It’s complicated."
  • The Freelancer: "I’ll go as fast as I can."

When the Freelancer is near Korox Shallows.

  • Faye: "Looks like he’s stopped. You should be able to catch up."

The Freelancer reaches Lover's Springs.

  • Faye: "I'm sensing something...Scars!"

Scars gate in through multiple air gates.

Eliminate Scars

The Freelancer fights and defeats the Scar enemies.

  • Faye: "Those Scars were quick to attack. Do you think they ambushed Sumner?"
  • The Freelancer: "Wouldn't rule it out."
  • Faye: "He must be in the area. But he might be hurt, or worse. You need to find him, quickly."

Inspect Crashed Javelins

  • Faye: "Tell me that's not what I think it is."
  • The Freelancer: "Depends on what you think it is."
  • Faye: "Yeah. It's a javelin. Badly damaged."

The Freelancer interacts to check for Sumner inside the Abandoned Javelin.

  • Faye: "Sumner's not in the crashed suit! He must've taken it off for some reason."

Sumner contacts the Freelancer through their communication link.

  • Sumner: "Hello? Freelancer, is that you?"
  • The Freelancer: "Sumner? Matthias?"
  • Sumner: "Yes, it's me! Bloody Scars! I couldn't take them, and there was a crack in the rock..."
  • The Freelancer: "And you couldn't fit in while wearing a javelin."
  • Sumner: "Wait, I think the passage leads me to the ruin I was looking for. I'll keep going."
  • The Freelancer: "Stay where you are!"
  • Sumner: "I can handle myself, and I'm already here. There'll be another entrance! Meet me inside!"
  • The Freelancer: "(Groans.)"
  • Faye: "I’m sending you a location. All the maps mark it as a subterranean passageway. It could lead to the cave network that Sumner’s trapped in."

Bring Sumner and the Manifold Home Safely

The Freelancer flies through the Silent Path.

Find Cave Entrance

The Freelancer flies towards The Necropolis.

  • Erryl: "Was that Sumner?"
  • The Freelancer: "He's trapped underground somewhere. How's Matti?"
  • Erryl: "None of his major organs have liquified yet."
  • The Freelancer: "Major...organs? What about the non-major organs?"
  • Erryl: "Ah...just bring back the Manifold and Sumner as soon as you can."

Reach Sumner

The Freelancer enters the cave and finds several Elementals

  • Fate: "This could lead to Sumner."
  • The Freelancer: "Are you sure?"
  • Faye: "No. I’m a Cypher, not some kind of cavern oracle."
  • The Freelancer: "I guess there’s only one way to find out."

The Freelancer moves further inside.

  • Faye: "I’m sensing some strange energy. What’s down there?"
  • The Freelancer: "I don’t know. But Sumner has the Manifold with him, and he came here for a reason."

Defeat Hostile Creatures

Inside the cave, there is a blocky architecture. But more enemies spawn in. The Freelancer fights them and defeats them all.

  • Sumner: "The Freelancer! You there?"
  • The Freelancer: "On my way!"
  • Sumner: "I found what I'm looking for."
  • Sumner: "Yes, the resonance of this place is exactly what I need!"

Once the elementals are defeated, a Lesser Ash Titan spawns. The Freelancer, with difficulty, defeats it

  • Sumner: "The Manifold's responding to its surroundings. Perfect."
  • The Freelancer: "What are you doing? Be careful!"
  • Sumner: "Erryl thought taking the Manifold to a different ruin would provide us with additional insight. Different ruin, different energies...he was right. But we knew we'd need a javelin to get out here and neither of them had the guts to borrow one."
  • The Freelancer: "You mean steal?"
  • Sumner: "Sure, whatever."

Reach Sumner

The Freelancer goes deep inside to find Sumner inside a barrier.

  • Sumner: "That's it! Got the data we need. Hah. It took someone with real drive to—oh, crud."
  • The Freelancer: "Sumner! What's happening?"
  • Sumner: "The Manifold just started going wild! Something unexpected about this place! I have to silence it, but I need time. A titan!"

Multiple titans emerge because of the disturbance in the relic.

  • Sumner: "No, more than one titan. Three titans! Wait… three? The glitching Manifold. It’s doing it again!"
  • The Freelancer: "Leave it to me and fix that relic!"

Defend Sumner

While the Freelancer fights the titans, Sumner begins working on fixing the Manifold. The Freelancer fights all the titans and defeats them.

  • Sumner: "Close one."
  • The Freelancer: "No time to waste. We need to get to the others."
  • Sumner: "Why do you sound so alarmed? What’s happened? Freelancer?”"

The Freelancer takes Sumner, the Manifold, and themselves back to the fort as quickly as they can before his reality decays.

Post Expedition

The Freelancer upon returning to the Fort heads to the check up on the Matthiases.

Check the Condition of the Matthias Trio

The Freelancer goes to check in on the Matthiases. Sumner has already gone to them.

Return to Matthias' Lab

Matti is seated and hooked up to an intravenous therapy setup. While Erryl holds the IV stand, Sumner is beside Matti.

  • Matti: "My teeth are tinkling. The air tastes like purple."
  • Erryl: "Reality decay is getting worse. He’s fragmenting."
  • The Freelancer: "How can I help?"
  • Matti: "It’s alright. I’ve made peace with it."
  • Sumner: "This isn’t just about you! It’s the end of all of us, if we don’t do something."
  • Erryl: "There’s nothing to do. We don’t have the answer."
  • Matti: "Maybe it was supposed to end this way. We could just let it be."
  • Erryl: "“Let it be.” Yes. That’s it."
  • Sumner: "You genius. Get the Manifold."
  • Erryl: "The Freelancer removed it from its original housing—"
  • Sumner: "—after it affected the Dominion soldiers. And we divided—"
  • Erryl: "You severed the connection again, out of fear."
  • Sumner: "Courage."
  • The Freelancer: "Hold on. Where are you going with this?"

Erryl climbs the Arcanist machinery to place the Manifold on it, after taking It off a table behind Matti.

  • Sumner: "Manifold needs more time."
  • Erryl: "It needs to go through its full cycle."
  • Sumner: "We’re gonna have to let the Manifold complete what it started."
  • Matti: "Let reality settle. But if it settles, it means our division…"
  • Erryl: "…could become permanent."
  • Matti: "That so bad?"
  • Sumner: "Certainly won’t be dull. So what do you say? You up for a new adventure?"

Sumner goes closer to Matti.

  • Matti: "(Exhales.) Always."

Sumner nods at Erryl, indicating him to hook the Manifold up to the machine.

  • Erryl: "Okay, we’re ready. Flip the switch. (Breathes heavily.)"

The Freelancer takes the switch and clicks it. Nothing happens.

  • Matti: "(Groans.) (Breathes.)"
  • Sumner: "(Grumbles.)"

Sumner points at the Manifold as if Erryl had forgotten to do something; a tried and tested technique that all arcanists swear by to always work.

  • Erryl: "Oh right… (Clears throat.)"

Erryl climbs the machinery to take the Manifold.

  • Sumner: "(Inhales sharply.)"

Erryl strikes the Manifold on the machinery. A sudden wave of Shaper energy disseminates across the lab for an instant. He steps down.

  • Erryl: "It has finished its cycle."
  • The Freelancer: "That’s good, right?"
  • Matti: "What a rush! What a rush! It worked! I think it worked! (Laughs)"

Erryl helps Matti stand up. As Matti falters, Erryl and Sumner hold him.

  • The Freelancer: "No chance of… liquefying?"
  • Sumner: "Time will tell."
  • Erryl: "For now, we have enough to help Haluk with your Dawn Shield."
  • Matti: "Yeah, especially with the data Sumner found."

Sumner pats Matti.

  • The Freelancer: "Does this mean Matthias will never be whole again?"

All three Matthiases speak at the same time.

  • Matti: "Who says we aren’t whole?"
  • Erryl: " Who says we aren’t whole?"
  • Sumner: "Who says we aren’t whole?"
  • All: "(Bickering.)"

The Freelancer leaves the lab with relief.
