An Uneventful Trip
See Cortex Entry: An Uneventful Trip for More Details

An uneventful trip so far, but it's been wonderful to see places I've only ever heard of in tales. We're coming up to some ruins that were either part of the Arcanist academy or a Sentinel outpost of some kind. So many ruins in this area. I can just imagine the Freelancers Three zooming around here, fighting chimera. Oh, we've stopped. I wonder why?

Balm of Gavinicus (Weapon)
See Cortex Entry: Balm of Gavinicus (Weapon) for More Details

Fire grenades with [FIRE WEAPON BUTTON] and detonate them by pressing [AIM BUTTON].
Balm of Gavinicus has allowed Freelancers to help establish perimeters and then hold them against many an enemy. Grandmaster Gavinicus was on a contract when his group ran into three chimeric ursix. His steady arm and ability saved the lives of everyone in his party. They described Gavinicus as "calm and terrible at the same time." Gavinicus was never without his grenade launcher, and his mastery of it became linked to the weapon itself.

Cataclysms (2)

Before them opened a great Cataclysm, and from it perils did emerge. But Helena Tarsis did not falter. She pressed on into the valley, though wind and debris and chimera all bit at her heels. When she finally reached the Shaper's great rings, she did not attack as Stral had, but observed that they needed repair. Through this, the General determined that the wound could be healed and their path to the fortress was restored

Chimera
See Cortex Entry: Chimera for More Details

Perimodes, Urry, and Gillimer spent the night rounding up the unfortunate wolven chimera, until only one remained. Perimodes, who took no pleasure in his task, called his fellowship to halt, so he might speak with the altered beast.
"What would you have me say?" asked the chimera.
"I wish to hear your voice. I must know if all of your kind is as cruel."
The chimera spewed icy breath at Perimodes. "I do not speak with men. I destroy them. I must destroy all."
Urry laughed. "Well, at least it knows what it wants."

Chimera Warning

Dawnguard
See Cortex Entry: Dawnguard for More Details

A popular radio drama featuring the adventures of the Freelancer guild known as the Dawnguard. Produced by the Antium Radio Transmission (ART), the first season of Dawnguard was originally conceived as a hard-hitting realistic drama, but fans believe the show revealed its true self in the second season when the character of Alhazen told Walker that he was actually a human chimera. The show has since become a longstanding sensation with increasingly dramatic storylines and the common "Electrify this!" catchphrase. The show has been renewed for a ninth season.

Elementals
See Cortex Entry: Elementals for More Details

Unlike chimera, which are fauna transformed by Shaper energies, elementals are sentient beings brought into existence by the clash between Shaper instruments and the violent energies of the Anthem of Creation found at the center of a Cataclysm. While the fire-spewing wyvern is commonly referenced as the example of an elemental, the most notorious and universally feared is the monstrous titan. Pioneering researcher Gelhold Fraf theorized that if we could unlock the secrets of an elemental's formation, we would gain profound understanding of the Shapers' design for this world.

Fort Tarsis (6)

"Everyone felt it, even people down in the marketplace. The ground shook like a mountain was sliding along rough rock. It was getting closer. The Fort's walls are solid and strong, but I had my doubts that day. They say the monster came from the darkest pits of the open sea, with a choking cloud of salty brine and decay preceding its first appearance. We readied ourselves as much as we could. The bones of Fort Tarsis would be tested today."
—From "Coiled Storm: Firsthand Accounts of the Hesperian Serpent" by Mentor Kurcer Attjax

Fort Tarsis (8)
See Cortex Entry: Fort Tarsis (8) for More Details

"When the Scar Warhive attacked, the walls stood. When the Hesperian Serpent emerged from a Shaper storm, the walls stood. When the titans marched, the walls stood. Fort Tarsis stands eternal."
—Sentinel Commander Vule

Furies
See Cortex Entry: Furies for More Details

The Dominion engage in numerous biological experiments inspired by their belief that they are meant to harness the Anthem of Creation's power. Furies are among the most visible and destructive results. Dominion defectors whisper about a factory where chosen prisoners were taken to “serve the cause” before they were exposed to the Anthem of Creation through Shaper relics.
After Freemark's destruction, Emperor Valus Dell proclaimed: “Like the chimera, Furies are no longer what they once were. Even their Dominion masters are wary of them, for their only thought is to kill. If you pity these poor souls, put them out of their misery.”

Lost Scrapbook (6)
See Cortex Entry: Lost Scrapbook (6) for More Details

Do you remember the night we first spoke? I can still see your face, grimy from the harvest, peeking under my bed. I can see your hand reaching for mine, coaxing me from my dark solitude into the moonlit room. You never told me it was all in my head. You never told me the monsters weren't real. You just filled my head with sweet stories and stayed by me until I fell asleep again.
Even when we were just children, you were already a hero.
Bex.

Midderon and the Path of Valor (1)
See Cortex Entry: Midderon and the Path of Valor (1) for More Details

Midderon was the son of Arcanists. He lived his entire life hiding in a cavern underground. At ten years old, he'd never seen the sky, or an urgoth, or any beast but humans. The world was utterly unknown to him, except for tales of horror and woe. But among stories warning children to hide and obey, Midderon heard one other. A whispered tale of a rebellion against the urgoth, and a Legion rising to free all people. So, the young Midderon left the safety of the Arcanists to find the Legion of Dawn.
Raised to be a scholar, he could read the secret signs of the Arcanists. He followed them through the wilds toward the Legion of Dawn. The chimera... had a different plan. Midderon had never seen a chimera. He'd never even seen a grabbit, but he was a very good student. He learned all the warning signs that he was being hunted, and remembered stories about laying false trails. He led the chimera on a winding path through the rocks. Back and forth. He could never shake the creature, but it could never find him. Then, other hunters came.
General Tarsis discovered the chimera stalking the boy while she wore the first javelin built by Arden Vassa. The General was just learning to use her javelin. No one knew what it could do—not even the man who made it. Not trusting her suit's strength in a direct fight with a chimera, Tarsis lured it into chasing her instead. While it ran after Tarsis, Liatrelle found the boy and spirited him away to safety.
Liatrelle took him to the Legion's camp. When Tarsis asked where he lived and who his people were, Midderon replied, “You're my people.”
The others tried to persuade him to return home, but Tarsis said, “He is home.”
Midderon then served as a page in the Legion of Dawn.

Midderon and the Path of Valor (2)
See Cortex Entry: Midderon and the Path of Valor (2) for More Details

It's time to tell you how the Freelancers began.
Midderon was raised by the Legion of Dawn. He witnessed Tarsis testing the first javelin. He was at the General's side when the Fortress was built, earned his own javelin, and eventually fought beside her. Of those that stood with Tarsis and held back the urgoth at Antium Pass, only Midderon survived. In grief, the Legion tore itself in two. Half went with Magna Stral. Half with Arden Vassa. And one Legionnaire who went with no one.
Midderon remained at the Fortress of Dawn, even though the gates were sealed and the lancers gone for good. Alone in the courtyard, Midderon heard a distant roar. It was a sound he remembered, for it haunted his dreams. The roar of the chimera Cindermaw. The monster that stalked him long ago. It had vanished for more than a decade, but returned upon the General's death.
Though Midderon stood no chance alone, he saw that the village of Anshar lay helpless in the creature's path. He found the chimera's trail and followed it—not to the monster, but to its lair. If he silenced the relic that created it, Cindermaw would be defeated. Midderon found the relic, though the monster lurked nearby. Midderon remembered his childhood of laying false trails. He woke the chimera and it chased his false tracks while he slipped past, silenced the relic, and defeated the beast that stalked him long ago.
Cindermaw fell. In that moment, Midderon knew his calling was to walk the Path of Valor, even if he walked it alone.
— As told by the Bard

Shaper Relics (6)
See Cortex Entry: Shaper Relics (6) for More Details

The relic shuddered before them, and the Freelancers sprang into action. Perimodes went left, gathered the nearest echo into his pack, then dashed to the relic, quickly restoring it. Gillimer went right, to protect the citizens of the market and lead them to safety. Lastly, Urry—suddenly free of his previous intoxication—raised his mace and chortled heartily at the chimera that sprung from the relic's maw.

Striders (1)
See Cortex Entry: Striders (1) for More Details

Striders are the bloodstream of Bastion. They are used to transport people, resources, and vital supplies for short distances or during lengthy expeditions into the wilderness. A strider can house an amplifier and up to four javelins at a time. Their massive size means striders can safely navigate most common dangers, but are vulnerable to certain chimera and coordinated attacks. Most striders can withstand being on the edge of a Cataclysm, but will not maintain structural integrity within.

The Dominion (2)
See Cortex Entry: The Dominion (2) for More Details

“The Dominion had a strange creature with it today. It seemed like a brute, but was wearing a helmet or canister of some sort… and it was … it wasn’t a chimera but it was darn close, shooting off ice and such. I decided to put it out of its misery and shot the canister. Then the thing when crazy! Took out all the Dominion soldiers. Serves them right. What they did to that Brute was an abomination. Animals are dangerous, yeah, but they don’t deserve that.”

Unending Battle (Weapon)
See Cortex Entry: Unending Battle (Weapon) for More Details

This weapon played a large role in the epic battle against the Chimera from the Mountain. Near the end of the titanic fight, it was discovered the chimera was vulnerable in close combat. A few brave lancers took advantage of this and pressed the battle up close. It was said, "If you're not close enough to touch the Chimera from the Mountain, then you're too far away to kill it." This weapon was developed by Forgewrights of old, specifically for tight and furious action.
