Brutes incoming. They're attracted to these crystals... interesting. |
Brutes are savage beasts found in pairs in the wild.
Etymology and Anatomy
Brutes gain their names Brute (A savagely violent animal.) The plural of Brute is Brutes. Brutes don’t travel in groups usually, but they are found in pairs. If they are in groups, they are called a clutch.
Brute is sometimes also called the Mighty Swiper Brutes are moss green colored with skobeloff patches on their heads, shoulders, chests, and thighs.
Brutes are bipedal creatures with sharp claws on their hands and feet. However, when they run, they are on all fours. Brutes have 6 bright-red eyes and sharp denticles. They also have several reed-like bristles on their head and upper-back, and their tips glow a bright yellow. Brutes also have short bristles all over their bodies, and especially on their backs.
Narrative Involvement
Brutes are almost always found in pairs. This is because these creatures have decided to permanently mate with each other, according to Arcanist Venwick Crok. They are usually found in areas with shallow water and swamps.
There are records of Brutes migrating into Bastion from an unknown region. Brutes are attracted to Shaper Crystals when they resonate.
Brutes can become chimeras during intense Shaper activities. have also been captured and weaponized by the Dominion with the use of control collars, giving them additional elemental powers and strengths (See Trivia for details).

Behavior and Abilities
A Brute Charges to Attack
Brutes have the following abilities:
- Lunging Claw Strike: Brutes lunge towards their enemies and strike them with the sharp claws on both their hands.
- Acid Spit: Brutes spew acid blobs on their enemies.
Hidden Attributes
Brutes have the following hidden attributes:
- Paired-up: Brutes are found in pair in the wild and they attack their enemies together, unless created by a relic.
Strategy
Doing damage to or defeating these creatures can make them drop ammo and repair packs. If health or ammo is low, collect these resupplies.
Combat
When a Brute approaches its target, it is preparing for its lunging claw strike. If a Brute sees a foe in the distance, it will use acid spit.
Targeting the head of the Brute will do more damage to it, since that’s where the weak point is located.
Every Named Brute
There are no named brutes. However, there are several Legendary Brutes encountered in World Events and expeditions, usually summoned by Shaper Relics.
Trivia (May Contain Spoilers)
- Brutes smell like swamp water and old blood mixed together.
- The Brutes weaponized by the Dominion become Dominion Storm Brute or Dominion Frost Brute depending on the collar used.
- Shaper corrupt Brutes can become Ash Brute chimeras.
- At launch, usually there were three Brutes found in the wild in a group. However, this was corrected in a later patch so that it remains consistent with the lore.
- The number of pips in the health/armor bar do not represent the total value. This means, two types can have same number of pips, but the stronger type (legendary or elite) will have a significantly higher health than their weaker counterparts.
- The ability names are taken from the Anthem Prima Guide and datamined files. They may have been slightly modified to avoid confusion with other in-game names.
