Troubled after being divided by the Manifold, Matthias begged the Freelancer to help him seek answers. Their search led to Arcanist Aruna Kaule, a specialist in the strange effects of Shaper Energy.
Aruna realized the Manifold's division of Matthias was unstable, resulting in a slow but certain decay of reality around them. If left to run its course, the decay would destroy all three of the Matthiases.

Just dropping a note to tell you that I'm going to head out on an expedition again. Got another letter from my mother and... well, it was the usual, but I told her straight how I felt about being an Arcanist, and I think she understands now. She hasn't accepted it, but I think she understands.
I just have to be patient.
Anyway, you take care of yourself. And as my father used to say: Don't tickle a titan you don't know.
See you around.
—Aruna

I had no idea teenage Arcanists were such temperamental, mouthy little shits! Was I like this? Was Matthias like this? They question everything! And some of them smell really bad!
Most days, I'd rather be smacked in the face by a stray, volatile echo. Several. Twenty.
And yet, even on the hardest days, I feel like I'm doing something real. Earning their respect, seeing those disaffected faces display true, unabashed wonder—priceless.
I regret everything, and I regret nothing. I'm blaming you, by the way.
The invitation to see me at the Academy is always open. Say hello if you're in the area.

So it was all you, huh? Putting the thought in Aruna's head that she should "reconnect" with one of us.
You didn't tell her to pick me, did you?
Did she pick me herself?
She picked me herself, didn't she? Shit.
Too much pressure.
What am I going to do? I don't want to screw this up.
I should talk to Matti.
Is that weird? Would it be weird to get advice from myself?
I'll talk to Matti.
Thanks.

I need help, and I haven't been able to pry Matti and Erryl away from Faye's collection of Dawnguard tapes long enough to get a coherent word out of either one.
So you're it.
Lucky you.
Hypothetically, someone—let's call him "Shmatthias"—had too much to drink one night and decided to write Aruna's name in bioluminescent bryophyta across half the buildings in Fort Tarsis in such a way that it could only be read from her apartment window.
To accomplish this task, drunk idiot Shmatthias may or may not have broken into the labs of several other Arcanists in the Fort to obtain said glowy moss, and then, when that didn't turn out to be enough to finish the last letter, also snuck into Sentinel Brin's office and stole all of hers.
If something this foolish had happened, hypothetically, could you hypothetically smooth things over with Brin before she conducts a hypothetical investigation?
Admitting to nothing,
Sumner
