Lord Brall: Milord, the visitors from Antium are missing. As is Brexis.
Cadmius: Missing? What say you?
Lord Brall: He has stolen blueprints to our grand secret, oh great one.
Cadmius: Our precious amplification! Stolen from under our nose. Find him. At once! As for the so-called diplomats from Antium… let them sit in the bellies of the mantikars.
Lord Brall: As you say, my lord.
Lady Cadmius: Dearest sir. Your flesh has turned ripe, and your body is about to fall from the tree.
Cadmius: Tree? What tree? Do not spin metaphors while I’m in the throes of anger!

This all-purpose communication device allows lancers to stay in contact with each other through shortwave radio, as well as maintain mental contact with cyphers. Cyphers can also act as a conduit for additional parties to observe and comment on lancer activities. Early experiments between Corvus and the Satomi dabbled in sensory linking between all parties. However, this overloaded lancers who needed to focus their mental energies on piloting their javelins. Additional technology to limit what information lancers receive has since been developed. Socially, it is considered rude to wear links in certain situations, and the Antium Bard's Union has banned links at all performances.

The public's confidence in Freelancers was shaken after the Freemark disaster and the failure to silence the Heart of Rage. Many looked to the Sentinels, an organization that not only escaped blame for Freemark's destruction, but grew in esteem since then. The Sentinels tried to maintain order both within and outside the Fort Tarsis walls, an impossible job that would lead to additional tragedy, despite their great courage.

This pistol belonged to the legendary Sentinel Argentum Tran. She was stationed in Fort Tarsis as a young officer, and fought on the front lines during the War of Seven Luminaries. After distinguishing herself in the battle at Junkhead Basin, she was recalled to the capitol, and left this gun to a close friend among her squadmates. She reportedly said, “It's never failed me, and neither have you. It's a perfect match.”

The sidearm has been passed down among active duty Sentinels ever since. And now it has been given to the Freelancers as a sign of lancer fellowship.

Cyphers are individuals with a sensitivity to the Anthem of Creation and are capable of telepathic communication and heightened mental calculation. Many young people who are identified as having this unique gift undergo ember exposure and dedicated training to enhance their mental skills.
When cypher abilities first appeared, Corvus sought to use these individuals for covert purposes. They developed amplifier technology and created a type of institutional training center called a Satomi. The most important and advanced of these is Esteraat, the premier Satomi located in Antium.
Later, the Cypher Revolution brought cyphers expanded rights, freedom to choose how their abilities were used, opening a new world of communication between settlements and in the aid of lancers. While javelins were invented long before the cypher phenomenon, the addition of cyphers to operations outside the wall has made all lancers safer and more effective.

Scavenging and recycling have been important parts of Bastion life for centuries. In some settlements, creative scavenging is a point of pride.
The Memorial Gate of Fort Tarsis is fashioned from a repurposed strider, and the moon clock of Antium is reportedly made from the early javelin creations of Arden Vassa. It is common to repurpose smaller parts like nuts and bolts into button and other fasteners.
Discarded javelin parts found by lancers in the wild can be used to forge equipment and weapons.

While Cataclysms have been a constant in our world, we have chosen not to experiment with the Anthem of Creation. Scars have no such reservations. They seek out Shaper relics for their own purposes. The Scar Luminary who led the attack on the terraces used a relic to charge its weapons with extra firepower. In a separate attack, Junkhead sought to use a relic to make itself physically stronger. While a tempting experiment, Antium has declared that relics are simply too unstable to be safely manipulated by humans. As always, every effort should be made to keep Scars from accessing relics.

A key Legion of Dawn member, Arden Vassa invented and built the first javelin. A master of ember manipulation and Forge blueprints, Vassa reportedly constructed the first javelin in just five days.

When the Legion of Dawn divided into three, Vassa led a great throng to Antium and was received as a hero. He invented Antium's fortifications and transformed it from an insecure village to a safe haven. While there, Vassa made numerous discoveries and breakthroughs in technology, then passed that knowledge onto his children, Fortuo and Dell. In turn, they taught their own children. Fortuo eventually left to found his own city, but Dell and his bloodline have remained rulers of Antium.

The feats of design and engineering attributed to Arden Vassa are too improbable to be believed. Are we to accept that one man invented the javelin while hiding in a cave somewhere in the Bastion wilderness? It seems unlikely that the same person could have designed the walls of Antium and the gardens of the Academy, and yet both are attributed to Vassa. It is far more likely Arden Vassa was a group of Arcanists and Engineers whose work has been misattributed.

The first lancer and leader of the Legion of Dawn. Helena Tarsis is humanity's most revered and celebrated hero. The Volume of Tarsis claims that she was the lone survivor of an escaped group of slaves, though the General reportedly spoke little about her past.
Tarsis, her husband Garred the Chronicler, and inventor Arden Vassa recruited and trained an army to overthrow the urgoth. At the Dawn Gates, Tarsis fell in battle preventing the urgoth's final act of vengeance, the attack on the human settlement of Antium. Sometime after her death, she was reportedly spotted near Anshar, prompting the belief that she would rise again and inspiring construction of the Helena's Walk temple.

This is the story of how the Legion endured its own destruction.
While Arden Vassa and Stral argued about the remaining Legion's path, Liatrelle prepared. She prepared her oldest friend and other fallen for burial. And she prepared the way for those still to come. She took Garred's Volumes of the Legion from the Fortress of Dawn before it was sealed. She left Helena's signet in the General's tomb so it could someday be claimed again.
Liatrelle would not abandon her friend, or her path, even though the battles were over. The world would always need Tarsis. And Tarsis would always need Legionnaires. She followed Vassa to Antium for a time, and left the Legion's records with trusted lancers to be maintained and passed down by generations.
Once her preparations were complete, her plans in motion, Liatrelle walked out of Antium and vanished.

Let me tell you the final tale of Magna Stral.
When General Tarsis fell, those closest to her mourned. Each carried grief in their own way. For Stral, the loss of her friend and leader summoned rage. She couldn't rest while a single urgoth lived. They were already broken by the Sword of Fulminous, terrified, fleeing to the dark corners of the world. But Stral followed, hard on their heels. When at last her scouts found no more enemies, she returned to the Fortress of Dawn. There she found the doors sealed. The Legionnaires were preparing to leave it forever.
While Stral eased her grief with battle, Arden Vassa fixated on his duty. With her final breath, Tarsis made him swear Antium would not fall... no matter the cost. At her command, Vassa prepared to take the Legion of Dawn south to guard Antium.
Outraged at this perceived desertion, Stral ordered the lancers to halt. And they obeyed. Her General secured a future for all people, not just Antium. She called for the Legion to follow her, to battle the enemy in the darkness where they'd fled. Stral was admired—some say revered—by many, and they gladly joined her cause.
Vassa called them traitors. Stral declared those who stayed behind were cowards. And the Legion broke. Those who followed Magna Stral called themselves Paladins, and went north to pursue the enemies of man. They vanished into darkness, and were never heard from again.

It's time to tell you how the Freelancers began.
Midderon was raised by the Legion of Dawn. He witnessed Tarsis testing the first javelin. He was at the General's side when the Fortress was built, earned his own javelin, and eventually fought beside her. Of those that stood with Tarsis and held back the urgoth at Antium Pass, only Midderon survived. In grief, the Legion tore itself in two. Half went with Magna Stral. Half with Arden Vassa. And one Legionnaire who went with no one.
Midderon remained at the Fortress of Dawn, even though the gates were sealed and the lancers gone for good. Alone in the courtyard, Midderon heard a distant roar. It was a sound he remembered, for it haunted his dreams. The roar of the chimera Cindermaw. The monster that stalked him long ago. It had vanished for more than a decade, but returned upon the General's death.
Though Midderon stood no chance alone, he saw that the village of Anshar lay helpless in the creature's path. He found the chimera's trail and followed it—not to the monster, but to its lair. If he silenced the relic that created it, Cindermaw would be defeated. Midderon found the relic, though the monster lurked nearby. Midderon remembered his childhood of laying false trails. He woke the chimera and it chased his false tracks while he slipped past, silenced the relic, and defeated the beast that stalked him long ago.
Cindermaw fell. In that moment, Midderon knew his calling was to walk the Path of Valor, even if he walked it alone.

With their multitudes buried in the avalanche, the vengeful urgoth turned the remainder of their forces south, toward Antium—the hope of humanity, a town beyond the mountains, untouched by urgoth will. Once again, Tarsis gathered a trusted few and, with the speed of flight, arrived at the mountain pass to stop the urgoth.
The urgoth gathered a great host, yet Tarsis would not yield, and she held the pass for three days until more Legionnaires arrived on foot. With a chorus mighty and strong, Dawn swept in behind the urgoth, pinning them against the mountain walls until their ranks fell dead. Antium remained untouched.
Yet victory came with tragedy, for Tarsis herself was among the slain. The Legion carried her from that place to pay her proper honor.

To Commander Vule,

On behalf of the citizens of Fort Tarsis, I am petitioning for an increase in parchment stores to be delivered on a regular cadence. The rate in which this Fort's population consumes parchment so that it can produce letters, contracts, and entertainment is more than our current stocks can bear. I know that you have issued a request for citizens to reduce how much parchment they use, but I would argue that this is a mistake. We do not have the luxuries and distractions of Antium or Heliost. For many of us, parchment is our only outlet. It is how we connect and stay sane. Without it, I am positive you will see an increase in undesirable activity. That is not a threat, mind you, just a prediction.

Belhallow: Thank you for agreeing to this interview, Emperor.
Emperor: Please, call me Valus.
Belhallow: Of course. Valus. That's very different than previous Emperors. In fact, some say you make an effort to be different, more open than your predecessors.
Emperor: They would be right. The royal family has been... quite separate from the people of Bastion for too long.
Belhallow: Why do you think that is? Has the royal family thought of itself as... more important than others?
Emperor: Well, I'm sure some have, but the one thing we have always been taught, generation after generation, is that we are meant to protect the people of Bastion above all. Arden Vassa left us a lot to do.
Belhallow: Did Arden Vassa also leave you, your family, with any particular knowledge?
Emperor: I see. We are getting to the point now. Why don't you ask what you really want to? I understand.
Belhallow: Did Arden Vassa leave his heirs with special knowledge about Ember? About the Legion of Dawn?
Emperor: Ah ha. As I suspected. Nothing so specific, though. Our ancestor did leave records of how to build, and some early blueprints but our technology surpassed that long ago. These artifacts are now merely historically important.
Belhallow: What do you say to those who believe Vassa left secrets that can only be unlocked by his bloodline?
Emperor: I would ask them to tell me what those secrets are, or where they are kept. I would like to know too.
Belhallow: (Laughs.)
Emperor: There are lots of theories and speculation about why Vassa's heirs must remain Antium's rulers. In truth, it is simply because it is our trade. We learn to govern at our family's knee. Like the apprentice learns their craft from a master, I learned my trade from my mother and father. Not all these lessons are easy. Ruling is not simple.
Belhallow: Last question. A popular one among our readers. Which is your preferred javelin? Emperor: That's easy. Colossus.
Belhallow: Any reason why?
Emperor: Mostly, because it was designed by my ancestors. And even royalty can understand the desire to smash our way out of trouble.
Belhallow: Indeed. Thank you.

This week the season kicks off with the traditional Fort Tarsis Ice Sculpture Smash! Participation is free but those taking part must bring their own tools. Please gather at the south wall at sunrise to claim your block of ice. Come and show off your artistic skill to your fellow citizens by creating an effigy in ice. Citizens in Tarsis are once again invited to the Freelancer Enclave tomorrow for shaved ice treats. Freelancer Jak will act as Honorary Frost Fellow for the festivities this year. The cyphers will be running games of chance with the proceeds going to the Tarsis Cypher Scholarship which sends altered children from underprivileged families to a satomi.

----------

Congratulations to our resident Bard who recently returned from Antium with a trophy as the top dramatist in Bastion this season.

His winning dramatization of General Tarsis and the Ice Titan held the assembled crowd rapt for an entire afternoon, while the encores continued for almost a day more. Notably, near the end of his performance, he had everyone on the edge of their seats recounting the story of our recent fire during the Season of Skulls.

A group of citizens have proposed that the governor ban Shaper relics from Fort Tarsis.

"These relics can go off at anytime, and bringing one—even if it's dormant—into the fort is a huge danger to all of us," said group leader Diena Saihl, "Look at what happened to Matthias Sumner. He poked a relic and suddenly there are three of him. He had no idea that would happen. Do we want to end up like Dunar? Or Freemark?"

Arcanist Mentor Orun, visiting from Antium, responded to the proposed ban. "What would they have Arcanists do? Study relics outside the wall? That's ridiculous. The only reason humans survive here is because we seek to understand our world. Besides, the likelihood that our entire world is a bundle of Shaper ruins and relics is high. Banning them from settlements will not make anyone safer "

Council will bring the matter to vote later this year.

While word is often sparse from the remote settlement, it is now confirmed that contact with Primoris is lost—and has been for some time. All attempts to reach their cyphers has failed. Whether this is the result of mechanical failure, Cataclysmic interference, or some other cause is yet unknown. The last known person to have contact with Primoris is Gallen Dal, a trader who contacted the local cypher a week after departing the settlement via strider. It's now believed this conversation took place within days of Primoris losing touch. Dal claims the conversation was "ordinary and professional," with no hint of anything amiss. However, the cypher did make an uncharacteristic comment about a flock of butterflies before signing off.

Antium is investigating.

Emperor Dell would like to introduce shockbriar as a new tactic to keep threats away from Antium. Imperator Marjan provided clarification to the Times. "Electrifying the area around Vassa's Lock will hopefully keep curious wildlife away from our walls and provide natural light for those approaching the city at night. The shockbriar's beauty also provides a pleasing sight "

The move has divided public opinion. Landscape engineers are not thrilled, according to Grandar Meek. "Well, it's just dumb. Who is going to trim the shockbriar once it starts growing up our walls? And it's not going to keep the tesilars out."

Regular citizens like Wallis Borg are generally in favor of the move. "Why not plant shockbriar? It's pretty. And I trust the emperor. Royalty knows best, right?"

Antium News [Archives].

— Tragic news of yet another outlaw attack on a passenger strider between Antium and Fortuo. The ruthless gang was tipped off that smugglers had stuffed a hoard of major crystals under the floorboards. Although the thieves only wanted the crystals, Freelancers discovered most of the passengers dead in a gruesome scene. The outlaws spared only the children, who were taken to an farm near Pontiex.

— Congratulations to Freelancer Thetes, who celebrated his birthday by winning the Venter Race in his custom Interceptor. Since no one admits to letting the veteran win, we must assume his victory was fair and square.

Icetide is expected to begin in the next month or two. Harvest missions will be run out of the Freemark enclave this year. Freelancers from all areas are welcome to join.

Legend has it that General Tarsis and her small group of lancers used an early version of this autocannon when they held off the urgoth on the path to Antium. The Legion of Dawn's Felux is quoted as saying, "The more damage they took, the more damage they delivered; it was glorious and horrible."

Long ago, a wealthy merchant and a princess of Antium fell deeply in love. It was declared, however, that Vassa's heir must not leave Antium until her duty to the people was fulfilled. Undaunted, the merchant vowed that he would come again when she was done. Years passed, and as he waited, he rebuilt the old Sanctuary, where so many Legionnaires had fallen, into a beautiful temple that stood as a symbol of his devotion. Years past, and his hair was grey when at last he came to her again. “My love” he said, “You’re old and your duties are done. Let us be together at last.” Antium could not object. Upon seeing the home he’d made for them, the Princess shook with happiness. Hand in hand, they entered the palace with a blissful sigh, their last breaths on this earth. For though they couldn’t be together in life, they knew they would be together forever in death.

The Foremost structure of the Legion of Dawn, the fortress was the gathering place of free people during the battle against the urgoth. Its high walls and strategic position ensured that attack was difficult and never unexpected. The Volume of Tarsis describes how, at its zenith, the fortress housed thousands of people building javelins and striders and training warriors. Though the twin colossi statues that overlook the fortress were intended to intimidate the urgoth, it is thought that the urgoth never made an attack on the fortress, having met their defeat at the Dawn Gates. After Tarsis’ death, the decision was made to leave the fortress, and the free peoples headed south to Antium. The exact reason why has never been determined.

And once the throng had passed, Vassa gathered his verses and smote the bridge to the fortress so that no beast could easily cross. “Let nothing enter that is not worthy. That Tarsis’ secrets are not lost, nor easily won.” And he brought forth the waters to cover the meet, and swallow up the Legion's glory. The Legion of Dawn, once the beacon of freedom for mankind, was truly no more. And so Vassa led the people south to Antium, his own heart breaking with every step.

The poem references Durnwin Dell, a royal prince who was also a famously inept lancer, though none in Antium's court dare point it out. The verse recounts his supposed visit to the Frtress, where he battled insects and not much else, and caused a scandal in Antium society.

“Twas lithey in the brimmley glowves
Did in the Darkwood tarry fein

The Battle for the Crop Terraces is the most significant Scar skirmish to date, in which Scars mounted their first organized attack against a human settlement. It was a long and bloody battle, resulting in the total decimation of the fort's crops. Antium sent supplies and troops north, but had difficulty crossing enemy lines, causing extra hardship to those in Fort Tarsis. After the hard-won victory, it was decreed that the Scar population must never be allowed to grow that large again, and so “bug-hunts” became a necessary and dangerous practice for lancers in the area. The Terraces haven’t been cultivated since.

Last chapter of my book:
"Cutter Drayden was exhausted. At best, he only had a day before he died of a nasty rash. His old life selling trinkets in Fort Tarsis didn't seem so bad now. His book hadn't really worked out, and it was best just to bury it where no one would find it. If he hurried, he could be home before the loud scary things ate him."
That won't work; this is better:
"Cutter Drayden had stared into the maw—the worst the world could throw at him—and the world had blinked. He had nothing left to prove. His courage was stronger than steel. Having conquered the wilds of Bastion, he could now retire in Antium and live the life of the idle rich. Legions of fawning admirers would ensure the legend of Cutter Drayden eclipsed even that of General Tarsis."
Well, back to selling trinkets.

Get yourself two slices of crusty bread, made with whole Antium grain, if you can find it. Toast it lightly over an open flame, on a hot pan, or if you dare, in the jets of a fellow Sentinel. Did you know? "Make Toast in the Jets" used to be an initiation ritual for Sentinel trainees.

Now butter the toast to your liking. I generally go with the technical measurement known as the "wab," which is more than dollop and less than an ass-ton. Then apply a gentle scraping of a zesty mustard to your toast.

Get yourself some slow-roasted grabbit, sliced thin, and layer that on one piece of prepared bread. If there are drippings from the pan, make sure you drizzle that on too.

Pickles. Always the sour, briny kind. Sweet, if you want to be judged. Or you can leave them off entirely, if you're uncivilized.

Now slap that sandwich together and put it in your face. You can thank me later.

It hit me. There's only one way to look at this world. If you're going to live trapped in a maze you didn't build, then it's not your fault if you get lost! Nothing you do is your fault! If the Shapers created creatures with instincts and urges—to eat, to conquer, to kill—then it's baked into our nature. It's not our fault if wars happen. The Shapers made us that way! It's not our fault if we're greedy. We were made that way!
What does this all mean? It means I'm done walking around this damned jungle. I'm going to Antium and I'm going to do whatever I please. The Shapers want me to be rich. Freelancer,

I know I thanked you already, but it's not often strangers help one another in this world. Loaning out a cup of sugar, perhaps. It's a rare soul who actually takes the time to listen to an old woman's story like you did. I'm sorry for the position I put you in. That must have been difficult, playing along with my hopes that you were my child. Grief is a funny thing, which I can now say, having only started to experience it after putting it off for so long. But, it's also cathartic. At least it has been for me, and that's because of the patience you showed. For a brief moment, I was able to experience a mother's love again, and that's a memory I'll cherish forever.

In the meantime, I'm living with my sister in Antium and finding all sorts of fascinating things to paint. I needed a kick in the pants to get me out of my doldrums, and you provided it.

With much love... your other "mother."
